Map size and aspect ratio
Added 2021-01-26 09:29:47 +0000 UTC
Hello everyone,
in the last few months I have drawn almost all the maps of 3500x7000 pixels, for a grid of 25x50 squares.
So a ratio of 1: 2
Why this choice?
I thought that these kind of maps were handy for encounters that had some sort of advancement from point A to point B, therefore not maps for encounters with the focus in the center of the map itself.
Now I ask you:
Do you think it is the right choice?
Have you encountered any problems in managing these maps in VTT software?
Do you have different preferences? Which?

I think a variety of map sizes is best overall. Much like you want the story to have a variable challenge/tension curve, it's more interesting to have battlemaps with a variety of sizes, terrain complexity, levels of clutter and other features. I certainly don't think 25x50 is a bad size, but IMO variety is always best!

2021-01-29 09:22:42 +0000 UTCI second this. I find myself zooming into large ones for a small skirmish or leading the campaign across several for larger compounds and areas. Its not a videogame, i want players using their imagination which is why im actually a fan of less detail and more generalized. I will draw on a crude broken fountain, wall or whatever's based on story needs, and my crude MS paint variants look a little childish compared to the nice art below, but work fine. Its not pretty but the players seem to do a good job using their minds eye. :-). Just not possible anticipate everyone's needs when making a battle map.

2021-01-28 12:37:43 +0000 UTCmost maps I use are in the 30x30 to 50x50 range... multilevels, interesting terrain to play around, etc.
2021-01-27 20:23:08 +0000 UTCYeah. Like a side scrolling game. Just seems fit the screen a little better. But I can rotate the maps if need be.

2021-01-27 12:58:30 +0000 UTCYou would prefer medium-small square maps (20x20, 30x30) or bigger (40x40, 50x50)?
Tehox
2021-01-27 07:57:34 +0000 UTCBy horizontal do you simply mean the rotated maps or that the development of the encounters takes place on the short side, in order to have space laterally?

2021-01-27 07:55:35 +0000 UTCI prefer maps more of a square aspect ratio of one cool spot, rather than something to traverse across.
2021-01-27 01:55:26 +0000 UTCAnother vote for horizontal arrangements, but it is very easy to rotate for our needs. Horizontal just fits on everyone's screen better.
2021-01-26 21:39:35 +0000 UTCI do love 25x50, but would also love some 30x30 or other square maps

2021-01-26 16:49:27 +0000 UTCI've scheduled to draw a set of 3 linkable maps. Joined will be a 25x150 with 3-4 main interest points

2021-01-26 16:49:00 +0000 UTCIt might be nice to do a horizontal setup every now and again too.

2021-01-26 12:58:03 +0000 UTCI like maps which allow for advancement but anything too large increases loading time in my VTT dramatically. Anything up to about 90x90 is fine, larger would be impractical.

2021-01-26 12:11:57 +0000 UTCI think they're great, but would also like some longer ones with even more advancement, progression through one big map is easier to manage I find then switching between them, but I also like square single encounter maps, basically the more variety the better IMO, if I don't want to use the whole map I don't have to, but it's nice to have options. 👍
