The title is a little cheeky. I totally should draw Stephanie and Barbara more often. But someone, or something brought up Darkstalkers while I was working... Oh wait, it was the anime High Score Girl on Netflix. I really like that one so far! It's a remarkable young romantic comedy that centers itself around Japanese videogames and arcades from the late 1980s on. It particularly visits important fighting games throughout history, but that is only part of the charm. I just like the lead characters so much and their childhood romance is awkward and adorable. It uses a couple familiar tropes but does them all very well.
Anyway, I should probably talk about Morrigan here. When it came to Morrigan, I definitely felt encouraged to draw even more exaggeratedly than I usually would. Going for improbable figures is pretty normal in Darkstalkers and other Capcom art, so I went ahead and emphasized those lines for clarity. Making sure her breasts look heavy, giving her thick thighs AND a thigh gap. It's all very exaggerated. In a way, that's useful for telling viewers that it's a pinup right away.
Doing natural looking pinups is cool too, and you can see it growing in popularity online. At least, I seem to think it's growing in popularity. I happen to like those posts more often than I like the really obvious ones that exaggerate lines for boobs, hips, and thighs. I actually like both sorts of drawings! I'm ultimately trying to find a balance between the two, where I can use cartoonish symbols knowingly while also demonstrating a strong sense of real feeling drawings.
