Now this one was an interesting challenge. This was a fun sketch commission of a gymnastic OC but definitely a challenging one. There's a high res version (as well as two alts where I make her look a bit more like "Stephanie Brown") in the high res drop box. I'll be updating the link to that for November shortly.
Doing a pose like this is difficult for me because I have never in my life done any sort of gymnastics. It's hard for me to understand exactly what to watch for. And looking at this image, a day after I did it, there are a couple things I might adjust. But time doesn't always permit that. Being professional, I'm finding out, often means you've got to call a work done even before you feel like you've used all of your abilities.
This has been the biggest challenge as someone doing commissions. You instinctively want to give it your best shot. And you totally should! But sometimes there are things that are outside your expertise. Or things that take a lot of learning or redrawing to get it right. Basically, you start asking 110% of yourself. That extra 10% is extremely difficult, and very punishing because it wouldn't be fair to ask for more money to cover the extra time and stress. Instead, you've gotta learn when you've done the best that you could and hope everyone is happy with it. At this point, I'm quite happy with this piece. And it was an opportunity to learn how to draw something I usually don't.
While I'm here, thank you all you new patrons! I suspect many of you came from my tumblr and that makes me happy. Glad to have you on board. Hopefully you like what you're getting.
