Patreon Cost Changes

Hey folks, I wanted to take a minute to talk about the Patreon changes. First here are the most pertinent details.

I'm no expert but...

If my calculations are correct, this is what you guys can expect to be charged in the next billing cycle and for every foreseeable cycle.

$1.00 Patrons will be charged $1.38

$4.00 Patrons will be charged $4.47

This doesn't include VAT costs which I don't have much knowledge how to calculate.

At this time, I don't plan to adjust the tiers. The one dollar tier cannot be adjusted lower. It could be possible to change the four dollar tier to account for fees but I don't have plans to do so just yet. I wanted to get this out there first.

From a sheer dollar to change ratio, it's clear that $1.00 Patrons will experience a larger change. This happens to affect all their different pledges and will greatly affect Patrons who Pledge to lots of Creators instead of just a few. The more Creators they Pledge to, the more cost they incur.

This actually affects me too, as I Pledge to a number of creators for very small amounts. I had been considering dropping a few pledges before this announcement, and now with the change coming that gives me even more impetus to reconsider my finances.

For my own curiosity, I've created an unscientific poll that I would like to gauge how my own Patrons feel about these changes.

All this said, between this Patreon and pay for Cassiopeia Quinn. I'm doing okay. Full disclosure, as of writing this I haven't seen anyone drop their pledges. I'd expect that to change. And I think it will be okay. I know a lot of Creators and Patrons are very worried about the change. If you are, yourself, please direct your concerns to Patreon.

And of course feel free to comment here. There are a number of things I would like to do to keep people in the loop with new art. One of the places I do that is on my Discord, with the occasional post of free art. If there are a lot of my fans who've supported me throughout the years on Patreon, I'd love to still recognize that and find some way to reward you all going on in the future. Well... apart from continuing to live and make new art.

Take care everyone. Lemme know what you all think if you've got the time.

Well, I'm from Europe so I already pay additional 23%, so the 2.9% ain't scary. The additional 0,35 cents is like another 7% for me in this case if my math is right, well, fine. But for a 1$ pledger those 0,35 cents are like additional tax of 35%, that's a bit now, yeah. I'm just bummed out that all those percents on my side amount to two or so decent pledges which I don't get to make myself. If not for the fact one of the creators I supported went on indeterminate hiatus lately I'd probably have to make a hard choice with one or another.

My problem is that they're either misrepresenting this or incompetent when it comes to the transaction fees. There's no way they should ever need to charge the flat rate per-pledge, that defeats the entire point of having Patreon as the middle-man. Something smell rotten with that no matter how I look at it.

I'm not a fan of this change at all because patrons should not charge fees to patrons for pledging. I will drop some of my pledges because of this.

So after doing the math, this is going to run me about 13ish bucks each month. That isn't really a problem, it's still in my patreon monthly budget. However, it will keep me from expanding my patronage. After all, if I had a choice I would love to see the creators get more money AND add more creators. So really this is just a slightly disappointing change.

To be perfectly honest, depending how this shakes out, I may have to drop a pledge to one or more creators. I only have so much in my monthly budget. This won't be one of them, and it seems like a big change that doesn't really accomplish anything positive, but all I can really say is that if some people drop pledges then don't take it personally. They're probably folks in a similar position.
