Anyway, this is kinda a heavy thought that more clearly affects other artists besides me. As I've talked about it, I've played it pretty safe and generally find a lot of stuff squicky to me too. But it appears Patreon has changed it's terms of service. So the days of finding all the squickiest of squick kinks on the site might be coming to an end. This isn't just the loss of a blog though, this is potentially the loss of a major lifeline of revenue for independent artists.
Even ones that do things that are pretty obscene, they're usually the ones that need the most protecting. This isn't a defense of hate speech, that's a whole nother can of worms that requires its own set of complicated answers. This is just protection of fantasy doodles that haven't hurt anyone ever. But again, I'll agree it's complicated and there are loads of good reasons for Patreon to play it safe.
At the very least it sounds like they'll have better commitments to helping creators get back into the good graces of the service. That's no comfort for people who base their entire patreon on objectionable material. Again, that probably wouldn't include me. But it's the kind of sword hanging over the heads of anyone even remotely squicky.
I can't really recommend anyone protest but it's maybe worth speaking up for others whose livelihoods are in danger. This has been a major nightmare for YouTube Content Creators over the past year. It could be just as bad for Patreon Creators too.
