Thank God It's Friday (the 13th...)

Just a dumb little sketch. Obviously this was more relevant yesterday when I made it, but whatever.

I think this might give me a good opportunity to discuss another little thing. If you think I'm reticent at drawing lewd stuff and sharing it, I'm MUCH more reserved about drawing violent stuff and sharing it. The trouble is, I think I'm pretty darn good at it. And it's pretty fun. I love dumb schlock horror and and metal covers. (By the way, to the guy that asked, the vampire movie I watched the other day was "Full Moon of the Virgins" which was on Amazon streaming and you can guess EXACTLY what it's was just knowing it's an italian horror movie with that title)

The thing is I'm still caught up with the perception that I need to control how I present myself or what I can get away with showing. People look at my stuff and can see the cute and appealing style and I certainly enjoy drawing that. I don't mind working to that sensibility. But I may have mentioned with say, drawing some Pretty Julie Technomancer stuff is that I also really enjoy horror and Mortal Kombat esque violence. When you combine those two factors you can get into a weird space that can potentially pigeon hole you or alienate certain viewers.

You guys have stuck around me long enough to keep paying for this stuff, so I think it would take a LOT for me to alienate you guys. But even then I find it very hard to work up the courage to publicly experiment with it. Like... imagine if Bill Waterson suddenly started coming out with a ludicrous 90's style uber violent comic book. The funny thing is, he could clearly easily have done it. He did that amazing Calvin and Hobbes strip with the action comic guy getting his spine blown in half. And he got away with it! I don't know if he enjoyed it but it was cool to me. And probably lost him some syndication!

I feel like... maybe I should just be a little braver and a little bolder. To work with whatever I feel like working with at the moment. When I want, I can still probably do a question duck but I'd also love to do a Blame! or a Battle Angel Alita with all that science fiction mecha gore.

It's just food for thought. Maybe I'll start doing drawings under an "action" tag or a "violence" tag.

That's the big question though, isn't it? How do I get to skirt a line without being skeevy. The line always seems to get pushed no matter what. I lost no patrons and very little of my audience when I started catering to pinups. But there's no doubt I lost a few. And if we were to say, just go full on "guro" then I'd probably lose a LOT of people. I don't think we're in danger of getting anything like that. But it's part of the whole thing where I don't think I'm satisfied doing just the same stuff. If I can get creative and cool with any aspect, whether that's making more cute things or even scary things, then I'll be there. But right now, with the holiday, it should be time to get spoopy.

Honestly all I'd really suggest is keeping the cute/pinup style stuff separated from any actual horror or violence. It's kind of a sadly common thing to overlap, but it can quickly come off skeevy or disturbing in the wrong sort of ways if you aren't super careful with how you do it. Also yes please more Battle Angel-esque robot sci-fi sorts. :X

Whelp I know what I'm watching for my yearly Horrorathon then. Thanks psu.
