A surge of electricity shot through my entire body, sending me flying about twenty feet across the room. I’d been the first to race across the dungeon to try and free my lover. Unsurprisingly, my fists had not been successful at breaking through the barrier. The almost formless entity was immune to any of her physical attacks, caring nothing for her sharp claws or venomous fangs. And like an ominous cloud of death, it latched onto her left arm and started… eating her.

Her scream was indescribable.

Ugh…

With a snap and a hiss, the force-field abruptly disappeared. A javelin-thrown lightning bolt flew over my head straight into the opening, skewering the shadow monster and causing it to burst into a cloud of smoke.

Ziyi collapsed to the ground, still screaming in anguish. Even from my vantage point I could see where her armored scales were blistered and misshapen. It was as if her left arm had been dipped into a vat of toxic waste or something. And the black creature of death was already re-forming right on top of her.

But then two electric fireballs whizzed through the air, making the creature of darkness wail with ravenous rage. Two more electric fireballs prevented it from solidifying. Magdalena then did her graceful power slide thing, skidding into the cell, where she scooped up Ziyi in her arms and then raced back out.

Meanwhile, the three hungry ghosts that had been stalking us started closing around us. Rae was whipping her electrified sword as fast as she could to keep them at bay, but they were somehow re-forming faster and faster now the closer they got to us.

They’re adapting to the impacts like Borg.

We were hemmed in by a brick wall on one side and four ghosts in a semi-circle, including the one coming out of the cell. Magdalena set Ziyi down at her feet and created two lightning-bolt blades that she whirled around in front of her to fight off two of the monsters at the same time.

And I remained essentially useless on the floor.

The girls were holding off the four ghosts… for now. But I could see the beads of sweat on Rae’s face and hear the rapid pace of her heavy breathing. She was getting tired. Magdalena was likewise weakening, and I wondered just how long they could last.

Suddenly, a thick ray of blindingly pure sunlight poured in from the left. Unlike a charged projectile, the ray endured, widening in size and increasing in intensity as the flow of energy slammed into the nearest ghost. The monster didn’t burst into smoke. Instead it howled in pain and rage as it was rapidly incinerated, burning away until there was nothing left.

Then the ray of sunlight incinerated another ghost.

And another.

Within less than a minute, all four ghosts were gone.

I’d shielded my eyes with one hand, but the light had been so bright that it took me a while to readjust to the comparative darkness. By the time I stopped blinking and managed to turn and look towards the source of the sunbeam, Tianshi and Ludovico had already walked right up to us.

And Ludovico’s hands were still glowing from doing… whatever… he’d done to burn away the ghosts.

Must be a demigod of Apollo, the Greek God of the Sun, Dong explained helpfully.

The tall, muscular Italian man arched an eyebrow and stared down at my crumpled-on-the-floor figure with a look of distaste, his expression clearly asking, Why, again, is this boy supposed to be so special?

But I didn’t care. I’d already crawled over to Ziyi, bringing her head into my lap as I sat up and cradled her.

“Are you alright?” I asked.

“Chezhou…” she breathed with a happy smile despite the obvious pain she was still in. Her eyes were tight, but she managed to exhale slowly and then reach up with her good hand to caress my cheek.

“I’m the one who got her out of there,” Magdalena muttered.

Tianshi glared at Ludovico, and she spat accusingly, “Did you tell Shen Wu of our arrival?”

“No, of course not,” the man grumbled.

“Then he must have spies within your organization.”

“Or perhaps you were followed here,” Ludovico countered. “But how he learned of your presence is not important. What matters to ME is that he sent his monsters into MY domain. You were right, Tianshi. Shen Wu cannot be trusted.”

The ageless woman scoffed, “You did not need ME to convince you of that.”

“True enough. But you have convinced me of the viper’s importance. For the shadow monsters to come here, it would seem that Shen Wu wanted to silence her before you could recover her.”

“Good thing we got back down here in time then,” Magdalena stated with a nod.

“Yes… A good thing,” Ludovico agreed before frowning. “But I must ask: Why did you come down here? Did I not give you express instructions to keep our visitors out of the dungeon?”

“Aksel had another vision,” Rae piped up, her attention on Tianshi. “He foresaw the attack on Ziyi’s cell before it happened.”

“Before,” Magdalena confirmed. “I thought they were trying to trick me at first.”

“Intriguing…” Ludovico mused, rubbing his beard with the thumb and fingers of his right hand, evaluating me in a new light. But after a moment’s thought, he straightened and turned back to Tianshi. “In any case, I’ve decided to agree to your proposal, with one condition.”

“A condition?” Tianshi asked suspiciously.

“That Magdalena accompanies your group.”

“Absolutely not,” Tianshi retorted immediately.

“She is a capable fighter and will aid in your cause.”

“I do not question her capability. I question her loyalty.”

“She is loyal to me.”

“Precisely. That is why I do not want her with us.”

Ludovico chuckled. “Are you afraid she is going to stab you in the back at an inopportune moment?”

“There are no ‘opportune moments’ to be stabbed in the back.”

Ludovico grinned. “True enough. But my condition stands. Magdalena will be my eyes and ears in this mission. If I am to invest in your cause and allow you to take the viper with you, I need to protect my investment by remaining aware of all that is happening.”

Tianshi scowled. Magdalena and Rae eyed each other warily as if unsure whether or not they wanted to be working together. And Ziyi closed her eyes in my laps, breathing slowly and looking drained.

It was a short drive back to the Lake Bracciano villa. Having jumped around from place to place so often over the past couple of weeks, I found it somewhat comforting to actually return to the same location. But that sense of comfort rapidly melted away as we drove through the gate and I caught sight of the separate bungalow where Hannah and I had spent last night together.

A moment later, she sat back in her chair, raised her knees to her chest with her heels on the edge of the seat, and wrapped her arms around her legs. And I started to question whether or not I had imagined it all.” Ziyi shivered. “There was a time I believed I must be insane.”
