Making Love: Chapter 17

-- CHAPTER 17: Holy Sh-t --

****

“I should’ve known,” I muttered for the umpteenth time, shaking my head while keeping my eyes fixed on the road in front of me. “I should’ve known Chet wouldn’t just sit around waiting for me to deliver his sexbot.”

“How could you have known?” Moemi soothed, reaching out to stroke my arm from the front passenger seat. “How could you possibly have predicted he would do something like this?”

“I don’t know!” I exclaimed angrily, smacking the steering wheel. “I just feel like I should have known!”

We had a plan. We had what I thought was a good plan. I’d thought I bought us three more months with the promise to deliver him a sexbot eventually. We’d added security to the house. The girls had were socializing and demonstrating to the neighborhood that they were “human”. With three more months to build those relationships, we all figured that Chet’s threats to tell the news stations that I was building living sex dolls would be made moot.

Then the guy must’ve gone into hiding or something, because none of us saw him around the neighborhood for several days. His wife and children had come to our Community Social at the pool over the weekend; but Chet himself had not attended, and when I’d asked his wife about him, she’d said he was on a business trip. It seemed reasonable enough, and while I’d suspected that Chet might not sit around twiddling his thumbs for the full three months gullibly waiting for me to deliver his promised sexbot, it had never occurred to me that Chet would resort to outright kidnapping one of the girls in broad daylight.

“I should’ve known,” I repeated again. “I should’ve known he might try something… anything. I should’ve planned for ANY eventuality.”

“You should’ve let me kill him,” Helena muttered with a sigh, and when I glanced at her through the rearview mirror, I found her staring out the window with her elbow on the windowsill and her cheek in her hand, shaking her head ruefully.

“You’re not murdering anyone, Helena,” I muttered. “And it’s mildly alarming that you still think that’s a viable option.”

“I’m not serious,” she insisted. “Just angry.”

“This is all MY fault,” Katarina moaned for the umpteenth time. “I should’ve seen him coming.”

“There was no way to see him coming,” Helena insisted to her twin sister, reaching out with her free hand to gently caress the reddish bruise marring Katarina’s face. The younger-by-minutes blonde could’ve magically healed herself, but I’d told her to keep the bruise just in case. “The two of you were minding your own business, just walking back home from Ayako’s house.”

“I shouldn’t have let you two go to that barre class without me,” I muttered.

“You? Joining a barre class?” Katarina asked dubiously.

“You know what I mean,” I sighed. “I should’ve kept you at home with me.”

“We all agreed we should be visibly social,” Katarina stated. “Things were going according to plan.”

“I just…” I began before sighing helplessly. “I should’ve been there to protect you girls.”

“You’re a lover, not a fighter,” Katarina said kindly.

“I’d have been willing to try,” I replied seriously.

“It’s neither of your faults,” Helena insisted. “Nobody could’ve predicted Chet would screech to a halt on the sidewalk, knock Kat down, and chloroform Lisa before throwing her into his minivan and driving away.”

“The fact that he even chloroformed her was shocking enough,” Moemi whimpered. “If he truly believes we are sexbots, he should not believe we need to breathe. Why would he use chloroform?”

“Maybe he doesn’t believe we’re sexbots anymore,” Helena muttered. “Maybe he just thinks we’re pretty girls and he wants to rape us.”

“What if he has already raped Lisa?!?” Moemi exclaimed before bursting into tears.

“He hasn’t,” I insisted, pointing at my phone mounted on the dashboard where the on-screen Find My app displayed Lisa’s current position. Chet had tossed Lisa’s cell phone out of the car a few blocks away, but all of the girls had embedded GPS trackers in them: part of our efforts toward improved security. “As long as that icon keeps moving, it means Chet is still driving. And I want to believe he’s still more interested in figuring out how she works than in raping her.”

“Where’s he taking her?” Katarina whined.

“No idea,” I replied with a sigh. “But we’ll get her back. I promise.”

“Go faster, Wyatt…” Helena urged. “We have to catch up to him, or at least get within Class 1 Bluetooth range so we can link up with her.”

“I’m trying, I’m trying. But the last thing I want is to attract police attention,” I muttered in reply. I was already doing eighty-five in the carpool lane and occasionally crossing the double-yellow lines to pass slower cars as I blitzed down the freeway, feeling a tinge of panic every time I did so. Chet must not have been driving quite as recklessly, because we WERE catching up to him. Still, I pressed down on the accelerator just a little more, pushing my SUV a little closer to ninety.

“Cops aren’t going to pull over another cop,” Katarina advised, rapping the roof of the SUV with her knuckles. “That’s the whole point of this.”

I smirked and took a quick glance around the center console with its array of additional equipment, including a Toughbook laptop, that definitely wasn’t standard for my personal Toyota 4Runner. Katarina was the one to snap her fingers and create a magicked L.A. Police Department Ford Explorer, complete with police lights and sirens. We wouldn’t turn on the sirens so as not to attract too much attention, but it did give me some reassurance that we wouldn’t get pulled over along the way.

“It was a great idea, Katarina,” I told the blonde through the rearview mirror. “A really great idea.”

She gave me a tight smile and shook her head. “It’s only a great idea if we catch up to Lisa in time.”

“We need to get her back…” Moemi whimpered.

“We’ll get her back,” I repeated firmly.

“If we don’t, somebody’s gonna die for it,” Helena growled.

“Still don’t want you murdering people,” I cautioned.

“Fine. I’ll leave him alive,” she muttered sullenly. “Just like… maim him a little bit. Cut off his dick and feed it to the rats.”

“Make him watch them nibbling on it,” Katarina added.

I glanced at both twins through the rearview mirror. “Remind me never to make you two angry.”

Katarina shrugged. “You’re good. Wyatt’s First Law and all.”

“Although there ARE loopholes…” Helena smiled rather malevolently, but she finished with a knowing wink.

I chuckled and felt a slight release in the tension that had been squeezing my heart. I took a few deep breaths, glanced again at my phone’s screen, and mentally calculated how much closer we were to catching up to Chet.

We’ll get her back.

We’ll get her back.

We’ll get her back.

****

I’d been cautiously optimistic that we’d catch up to Chet’s minivan before he got to his intended destination, so when the icon representing Lisa’s present location exited the freeway, I felt my heart in my throat and I stepped on the accelerator a little harder.

We were only two or three minutes behind, but I feared that anything could happen in two or three minutes.

Making things worse, the girls kept trying to link up with Lisa once we got within range, only for their connection efforts to continually fail.

“She must still be unconscious,” Moemi said mournfully.

Lisa’s GPS icon came to a stop in a small subdivision of single-story tract homes a few blocks from the freeway. Once we got a fix on the exact address, I screeched to a halt in the house’s driveway and all four of us burst out of the police truck with the lights flashing, all four of us dressed in police officer uniforms. In theory, none of the neighbors would call the cops if the cops were already here.

The roll-up garage door was down but I sprinted for the front door, for some stupid reason believing it would be unlocked and I could burst in and start hollering Lisa’s name. But the door was locked of course, and I resorted to banging on it with my fist and then stupidly jamming my shoulder into the wood as if I could still bust through.

“Definitely not a fighter,” Katarina pronounced behind me, and I glanced back in surprise to see that the blonde had transformed herself into the six-foot-tall, heavily muscled Amazonian Warrior and was coming up the walkway with a police-issue battering ram in hand.

“Oh, shit,” I muttered while getting out of the way.

Katarina quickly set her feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart, gripped the two handles of the battering ram, and swung it forward with deadly precision at the point right beneath the door handle.

[BOOM]

The door busted open with a loud crash and Katarina hustled inside.

“That’s my genius sister!” Helena pronounced, having also transformed herself into a hulking six-foot Amazon, as she followed Katarina through. I went in next, with Moemi right behind me.

Not knowing what to expect, I immediately brought my hands up in a defensive position with my hands balled into fists, ready to throw down. Helena was already moving through the sparsely furnished living room of what appeared to be a long-term rental property. Perhaps Chet owned the house as an income unit. Or perhaps was renting the place himself and planned to stash his new sexbot here so his wife would never find out.

“LISA!!!” Helena hollered as she headed for the hallway leading to the bedroom.

“LISA!!!” I bellowed immediately afterwards, heading for the garage, just in case they’d never come inside.

“I am getting a ping!” Moemi exclaimed, her eyes popping open wide as she stood up straight. “She’s awake!”

“Where?! Where?!” I yelled, turning my gaze left and right.

Just then, Lisa called back, her voice coming from the hallway, “I’m… I’m here! I’m okay!”

It felt like a ginormous weight slipped off my shoulders and I could suddenly stand up straight again. Only now realizing how tired I felt and that I was panting out of breath, I turned and summoned the strength to sprint down the hallway, right behind Helena. And then we both skidded to a stop in outright shock at the sight before our eyes.

Lisa sat upright on the bed, still clad in her skintight exercise outfit from the barre class, looking none the worse for wear. But despite the joy I felt at seeing her safe and seemingly unharmed, I’d only glanced at her for a split-second before all of my attention was arrested by the absolutely grotesque figure in front of me.

“What a piece of shit!” Helena exclaimed in surprise. “Literally!”

“Holy shit!” Katarina exclaimed in an identical voice as she arrived right behind me, while Moemi squealed, “何てことだ!”

The girls were right.

Chet had been transformed into a pile of shit.

****

To be honest, I’d always taken Chet’s name to be an odd coincidence more than anything else. I mean, I’d met the guy years and years ago back when I’d first moved into the neighborhood and never thought twice about his name. And just because there was an antagonist with the same name in the Weird Science movie didn’t necessarily mean that my neighbor Chet would turn out to be the bad guy of my crazy life, right?

But I knew it couldn’t be mere coincidence that Lisa had somehow managed to transform the guy who had kidnapped her into a ludicrously outlandish pile of slimy, oozing excrement with four limbs and a cartoonishly hideous face, just like in the movie. Perhaps I should’ve predicted such an outcome from the start.

Lisa had really turned him into a modern-day version of Shit-Toad Chet. He was a four-foot-tall lumpy mound of fetid, brownish, semi-solid slime and ooze with eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and even hair. He smelled like an overflowing pit toilet at an outdoor concert, and a half-dozen flies were presently circling in the air.

My jaw dropped in utter shock and awe, and the first words I said to my darling Lisa were, “How in the…? How did you DO that?”

Lisa’s eyes were wide and her hands were spread to the sides as she sat on the bed. “I don’t know!”

“Niiice…” Helena complimented with her arms folded across her chest and a smirk of delight on her face, clearly enjoying the sight before her.

“I-I just remember feeling r-really groggy while he carried me into the room and p-put me on the bed,” Lisa stammered, gesturing at the living pile of shit while Moemi rushed to her and gave her best friend a fierce hug. Lisa still looked stunned as she continued, “H-He… I felt him start taking my clothes off. But then the next thing I knew, he wasn’t touching me anymore and I heard you all calling my name.”

Speaking of groggy, Shit-Toad Chet blinked open his bulbous red eyes and wobbled his head(?) around, seemingly disoriented. But after a moment, his eyes focused and he switched from staring at Lisa, to staring at me and the other girls, and then back to Lisa. “What… the…?” he asked woozily.

The laughably ridiculous body that really did resemble a pile of shit possessed short, stubby arms and legs that did not appear to have a wide range of motion, although its fingers were proportionally quite long. Those fingers squeezed grotesque, fleshy man-boobs before jerking off the lopsided mounds in surprise. Most certainly, those were NOT the boobs Chet had expected to be fondling today.

His arms flailed out as his lumpy body seemed to straighten up a bit and his neckless head first tilted to scan his disgusting form before he looked up at me. “WHAT THE FUCK?! WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?! WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!?”

“Hi, Chet,” I greeted affably, feeling a preternatural sense of calm over the situation now that Lisa was safe and Chet was momentarily neutralized. “Isn’t it obvious? Lisa turned you into a pile of shit for trying to molest her. Built-in safety feature. Did I not warn you?”

“Built… in… wha--?” he asked in confusion. “Warn me about what?”

“You were right,” I told him kindly. “You were right from the very beginning. I AM building sexbots. All four of these girls started off as robotic machines made of plastic and metal. Now if you try telling people that, nobody’s gonna believe you. They’ve spent a couple of weeks socializing and getting to know their neighbors. They all have proper documentation and life histories in official government databases: birth certificates, driver’s licenses, college diplomas, etcetera, etcetera. If anybody comes snooping, we’ll be ready for them with a mountain of audit-proof records. I should thank you, really, for giving me a wake-up call about those little details.”

Chet mumble-grumbled and then farted loudly, which made all four girls wrinkle their noses in disgust and wave their hands through the air, perhaps regretting that they possessed a sense of smell.

“But the truth is,” I continued, “they aren’t mere sexbots anymore. They’re flesh and blood. They breathe and eat food and feel pain. They can smell just how noxiously foul you are right now. I actually don’t know how it’s possible. It’s not technology I can share if I don’t know how it works. Arthur C. Clarke wrote that magic’s just science we don’t understand yet, and I don’t understand it yet. But I know that it’s real, because the four of them are living proof.”

I paused and gestured around at each of the girls.

Living proof,” I repeated, emphasizing the first word. “They are people, as real as you and me, and I was never seriously going to build one of them for you. Because they aren’t unfeeling androids that only exist to serve a man’s sexual desires. They aren’t toys to be used, abused, and then discarded, traded, or given away. They are women with their own sense of free will, able to choose how to live their lives. And I rather doubt any of them would choose to go with you.”

I glanced around at all four girls, each of them wrinkling their noses in disgust again in a way that didn’t seem to have anything to do with the aromatic stench.

“And you think they all choose to go with you?” Chet challenged. “Are you saying you’d let them all go if they chose to?”

I pinched my lips together and took a deep breath. It was a question I’d asked myself many times ever since that big discussion with Lisa about her being hard-coded to my DNA. But as much as I’d miss any one of them should they choose to leave, I knew that letting them go if they so chose would be the right decision.

“Yes,” I stated seriously. “Yes, I would.”

“Bullshit.”

“You’re the pile of bullshit, dude,” I quipped, gesturing at him. “Or ‘toadshit’? Whatever…”

“If your fucking sexbot turned me into this, get her to turn me back!” Chet yelled.

“Now why the fuck would I want to do that?” I scoffed. “Serves you right for kidnapping one of my girls.”

“You can’t LEAVE me like this!”

“Can’t I?” I gestured ‘come hither’ for Lisa, and my wide-eyed redhead started scooting off the bed with Moemi still holding her hand. Returning my attention to Chet, I shook my head and said, “Give me one good reason why I should have her change you back? The smart move would be to grab my girls and just go straight back home.”

“P-please, man! Y-you can’t! You can’t leave me like this!”

I blinked and turned to glance at the girls. Focusing on Katarina first, I asked, “Did you hear a good reason for us to change him back? Did you?”

My second question was directed at Helena, and both blondes shook their heads in the negative.

“I AM curious to see what animals come crawling out of the walls and decide he’d make a nice snack,” Helena muttered. “Do cockroaches eat shit?”

“Eww…” I made a face at the visual.

“Please… Please, man! I’m begging you!” Chet wailed.

“Don’t beg me,” I instructed. “Beg her. Lisa’s the one who did this to you. She’s not an ‘it’. She’s not a mere robot who will mindlessly do whatever she’s told. She’s a person. She’s a woman. And it’s far beyond time that you figured out she’s got a mind of her own.”

Chet blinked and stared at Lisa. His grotesque mouth opened and closed a few times, emitting no sounds but disgusting wet squelches accompanied by trickles of drool.

(Fuck, that’s not drool. Eww…)

But eventually, he managed to find his voice as he whimpered, “Please… Please I’m begging you.”

“Try using her name,” I suggested while Lisa and Moemi approached me, Lisa ducking underneath my arm for a side-hug while we both faced Chet. “It’s the polite thing to do when addressing someone.”

“Please… Lisa… I’m begging you, please change me back. Don’t leave me like this.” Toad-Chet started crying then, his entire body shaking as rivers of brownish ooze started running down from his red eyes. “Don’t leave me like this…”

Lisa’s face took on an expression of pity, and she pursed her lips as she looked at him, and then up at me. Her eyes were full of uncertainty, and I realized just then that she didn’t actually know how to undo whatever she’d done. She didn’t know how she’d transformed him in the first place, nor did she know how to change him back.

But we both knew that every other time she’d magicked up one thing or another, it had always disappeared by the next day. Food, clothes, even the Tesla. I likewise assumed Katarina’s LAPD Ford Explorer would vanish overnight. And the look in Lisa’s eyes shifted as she came to the same realization and nodded her understanding.

And so Lisa turned to face Chet, and she stood up tall and proud. “Swear that you will never tell a soul about Wyatt or his creations.”

Chet’s entire body started jiggling like jello, and in an overeager voice he immediately announced, “I swear! I swear!”

“Swear you will never again threaten Wyatt or any of his girls.”

“I swear! I swear!”

Lisa’s jaw clenched and her eyes narrowed while she folded her arms across her chest. “If you so much as give one of us a funny look, I will not only turn you back into a pile of shit, but I will flush you down the toilet! Understand?”

“I understand! I understand!”

“Give me ANY reason to believe you are a threat to me or my family, and I will END you, understand?”

“I understand! I understand!”

Lisa swirled her index finger around in a circle and then gestured towards the bedroom door. “Let’s go.” And then she turned to lead the way out.

“Wait! Wait!” Chet protested while the rest of us started to follow Lisa out. “I swore everything you asked! I told you I understand!”

Lisa paused in the doorway and looked back at Chet over her shoulder. The rest of us looked at her while she smiled a sickening grin and muttered dismissively, “I think you deserve a few more hours of misery. Take this time to consider your actions and really think about your life choices, hmm?”

Lisa then dramatically snapped her fingers, as if that motion was a magical gesture that would transform him back into a man. But nothing happened, of course, and Chet started crying again.

“You’ll be fine by morning,” Lisa informed him. “Heed my warning. Consider what I could have done if I wanted to be cruel. And don’t ever come near me again.”

“I won’t! I won’t!” Chet whined, still crying.

Lisa walked out the door. Moemi and I followed her. Katarina and Helena were last, with Helena waggling her fingers in a mocking goodbye as she closed the bedroom door behind her.

Lisa’s bravado suddenly melted away, her knees buckled, and I had to catch her in my arms.

“Take me home, Wyatt,” she whimpered, looking completely drained. “Take me home.”
