This piece started over a year ago with the middle character pouring one out like that pig pilot in the opening scene. I often work this way: preparing an inspired pose sketch that stands on its own, but keeping in mind it'll somehow be useful later. The concerned character on the right was drawn next and it occurred to me both would work well together. I decided their opposing attitudes, one of focus, the other detachment, paired perfectly. They were put in what I imagine is a watchtower overlooking a sort of hidden home base for a band of mercenaries who've teamed up to hunt down the air pirates terrorizing the South Pacific.
The last image in this post shows my workup of the environment using perspective construction. It's simply not worth breaking out SketchUp when I can illustrate the room by hand in about 4 hours. It's worth noting I mapped out the watchtower forms as negative space views to the jungle while painting in the main color esquisse here.
