Miach Familia Premise Chapter 4

Hello friends and fans, Kairomaru is bringing you a new chapter! Bell has a new Skill to experiment with! With the ability to change the shape and range of his spells, Bell may well be on his way to making some pseudo spells, making him similar to Riveria and Lefiya in the ability to cast more than three spells! Thankfully, the Dungeon has more than enough targets for Bell to try out his altered spells on. With enough hard work and practice, Bell might just make a name for himself much sooner than anyone expected.

Chapter 4 – Practice, Merit, and Monsterphilia

In the courtyard where the Blue Pharmacy resided, Bell held his staff at the ready and focused. He vaguely had an idea of how his new Spell Control Skill worked, but now was the time to practice and figure it out for sure. With his mental image set on what he wanted his spell to do, Bell pointed his staff forward, the white gem atop it aiming at a solid stone wall.

“Burn brightly. Lasair!” Bell felt the normal drop in his Mind, miniscule, and then felt a slightly smaller drop right behind it as he pushed his mental image and intent into his spell through his new Skill.

Fire burst into life at the tip of the staff in the familiar cloud of flames, only to swirl inwards and form a thin arrow-like shape that launched in the direction that Bell was aiming. The fire arrow blurred through the air and hit the stone wall with a small bang as the shape lost form from the impact and the fire was freed from its constraints, spreading out in all directions in an instant. A black soot mark was left on the stone wall, about half a meter in diameter.

“Not bad, Bell.” Naaza said from behind him, a small smile on her lips. “Your range definitely increased.”

Bell turned to smile at Naaza. “Yeah, it worked out well! I’m glad that I’ll be able to take care of Monsters that’re farther away now.”

“Don’t forget to work on your accuracy.” Naaza reminded Bell as she took up her bow and nocked an arrow. With only a second to aim, she let the arrow loose and nailed a small cracked spot on the far wall.

“Amazing, Naaza.” Bell gave her a small applause for her archery skills.

Naaza grinned at Bell and then pointed at where the arrow was stuck in the wall. “Think you can hit that arrow?”

Bell aimed his staff at the arrow across the courtyard. “I can try!” He focused again and incanted: “Burn brightly. Lasair.” The cloud of flames swirled into the arrow-like shape again before Bell launched it towards Naaza’s arrow.

Bam

The fire arrow impacted the wall…about a meter to the left of the arrow.

“Ah…” Bell blinked at his miss.

“Heh.” Naaza playfully snickered at Bell. “Your aim needs a little work, Bell.”

Bell took aim again. “I’ll get it this time!” He focused on the arrow in the far wall and chanted once more. “Burn brightly. Lasair.” The flames swirled into the shape of an arrow again, the process of shaping his spell starting to become familiar now, before he launched it forward.

Bam

“You over-corrected a bit.” Naaza mentioned as the spell had landed roughly half a meter to the right of the arrow this time.

“Focus…” Bell took aim again while Naaza watched him with a warm smile at his dedication to improve.

-Dungeon ~ Sixth Floor-

Bell was moving through the Dungeon as he followed the map in his left hand. “Let’s see… If I head down this corridor, then I should get to a cavern near the edge of the Floor. That should give me plenty of Monsters to hunt, as long as no one has been there for a little while.”

It was a few minutes later than Bell spotted the entrance to the cavern and stowed away his map. Sneaking closer to the opening, Bell peeked inside and smiled as he saw a group of Monsters milling about. Frog Shooters, mostly, but Bell could faintly see the slight glow of the ‘faces’ of a few War Shadows hiding among the rougher, shadowed corners of the cavern.

“Burn brightly. Lasair.” Bell stepped into the entryway as he cast his spell. The cloud of flames appeared and Bell changed the form of the spell, making a fire arrow again. With a push of his will, the arrow of flame streaked across the cavern and blasted a War Shadow.

“Gugugu…” The War Shadow barely got out before it collapsed to the ground, the faint glow of its crystalline ‘face’ going out as it died.

“Gero!”

“Kero!”

The group of Frog Shooter croaked as they all turned to Bell, many of them hopping towards the Adventurer to close the distance and overwhelm him with numbers.

“Burn brightly. Lasair.” Bell cast again, pouring a bit more Mind into the spell and then shaping it differently, in a way that he couldn’t practice with on the surface. The cloud of flames spun into a massive sphere of fire that burned intensely as Bell launched it forward with a thrust of his staff.

BOOM

The charging Frog Shooters were engulfed in flames as the fireball exploded. The flames burned everything within six meters to death, and the Frog Shooters that were outside that range cried out as they were still burned from the spreading flames.

“Keroooo!”

“Geerrooo!”

The frog Monsters panicked and hopped away from the fading blaze.

“That worked out better than I thought.” Bell said to himself as he saw how many Monsters he’d managed to take out with the fireball. With a smile on his face, Bell moved in, parrying the slashing claws of a War Shadow, he shattered its ‘face’ with the end of his staff and moved onto the next Monster, a Frog Shooter, and bashed its head in as well.

“Gero!” A Frog Shooter’s tongue lashed out at Bell from behind.

Bell smacked the tongue away with his staff, only to realized that multiple Frog Shooters were moving in from all directions. With their numbers and the way they were keeping their distance, Bell knew he was about to be barraged from all sides by their long tongues. “I can’t get them all with one spell…” He figured out the situation quickly.

“Kero!”

“Gero!”

The Frog Shooters began to lash at Bell with their tongues. One tongue was smacked away with his staff, a second was dodged, a third was knocked to the side to block the fourth, another barely grazes Bell’s shoulder as he weaved around it. The non-stop attacks, forced Bell to move, but as he was surrounded, he didn’t have the option to make distance, nor could he close the distance with only one or two of the frog Monsters to try and break the encirclement.

I need a defense!’ Bell thought as he managed to dodge two of the lashing tongues and knock a third one to the side. “Burn brightly. Lasair!” Bell poured his mind into his spell and shaped it as he poured the cloud of flames from the top of his staff.

Woosh

A ring of fire flared high as Bell made a full three-hundred-sixty degree spin. The circle of fire burned intensely, even without fuel, scorching the lashing tongues of the Frog Shooters and making them all cry out in pain.

“Gerooo!”

“Keroo!”

The Frog Shooters flailed as they retracted their blackened tongues, their pain and agony distracting them as Bell moved.

“Hyah!” Bell was nearly on top of the nearest Frog Shooter the instant the flames of the fire ring dispersed. A sharp ‘thwack’ splattered the head of the Frog Shooter in a mess of blood. Bell never stopped moving as he lunged at the next Frog Shooter and the butt of his staff destroyed the Monster’s single eye. With it blinded, the frog Monster never saw the second swing coming before its head was also splattered. With an opening made, Bell dashed past the two dead Frog Shooters and then turned to face the broken encirclement. “Burn brightly. Lasair!” The flames spun into a second large fireball that Bell launched straight into the gathered Frog Shooters.

BOOM

The ring of Monsters vanished into the flames for a moment and when the fire dispersed it revealed nothing more than blackened corpses.

“Whew…” Bell exhaled heavily. “Nearly got overwhelmed there for a second.” He still managed to smile as his practice with his Spell Control Skill had definitely paid off. “The fire arrow has good range and damage. The fireball worked out better than I thought it would too.” He took out his knife and began to cut open the nearest Frog Shooter. “A ring of fire was a decent defensive option too, it burns anything that touches it, so not many Monsters are going to try passing through it.” He pulled out the first Magic Stone with a smile and added it to his pouch as the burned Frog Shooter’s corpse began to disintegrate into white ashes.

-Later-

Bell turned to look down a corridor when he heard a yell. He’d been on his way back towards the stairs leading to the Fifth Floor, heading back to the surface as he ended his day with his pouch filled with Magic Stones and his backpack having a few Drop Items within.

“Fuck!” The echoing voice from down the corridor sounded panicked.

Bell was moving without thinking about it, rushing down the corridor.

“Elio, move forward!” A male voice yelled out.

Clang

What sounded like metal striking metal was heard.

“Dara, back off!” The same male voice called out.

“Why are there so many?!” A female voice demanded loudly.

Bell stopped at the entrance of a cavern and nearly gaped at what he saw.

War Shadows…at least twenty of them…all swarming towards a Party of four Adventurers.

The two men, one in moderate armor and with a good-sized shield, was holding back as many of the War Shadows as he could, keeping his shield between himself and as many of the slashing, knife-like claws as possible, barely able to try and counter with his shortsword at all. The other man, acting as leader, had a sword in hand and simple armor covering his chest, shoulders, and legs. The first woman had a spear and was behind the ‘tank’ thrusting her spear forward again and managing to stab one of the many War Shadows through the head, killing it. But it was quickly replaced by another, while more started to make their way around the ‘tank’ and towards the rest of the Party. The fourth member, another woman, was clearly a Supporter, as indicated by the rather large pack on her back, and she was using a short bow to try and thin the War Shadow numbers, but the way the group was moving, it was hard to land a fatal shot on the golem-like Monsters.

“GAAAHHH!!!” Elio, the tank, cried out as a War Shadow managed to flank him and claw at him, slashing the back of his right leg. The loss of strength in the limb nearly made the tank collapse, but he dropped to one knee and stabbed the War Shadow that had attacked him, while using his shield to keep the slashing claws of the other War Shadows from tearing him apart.

“Shit!” The leader and Dara both moved in, stabbing and slashing to try and kill the horde of War Shadows.

“Gather the herbs to heal the body. Banish the evils of pain and sickness. Restore the body to wholeness; succeed where the father failed. Heal all who seek wellness.” “Bell chanted and then applied his Spell Control Skill to his Healing Magic for the first time, knowing exactly what he wanted at this exact moment. “Leigheas!” A bolt of the clear, pure light of Bell’s Healing and Cure spell streaked through the air and struck Elio in the back.

Dara, the spear woman, and the leader both saw the spell hit their friend in the back and turned to look at who would dare attack them from behind in such a situation. The Supporter looked at Bell in shock, not having heard his chant or knowing what his spell did as it struck Elio.

A half-second later and it became clear that Bell hadn’t attacked Elio at all.

“GET OFF ME!!!” Elio roared as he stood up to his full height, knocking the War Shadows backwards as he shoved them with his shield.

“Elio?!” The leader exclaimed at seeing his friend not only healed, but seemingly full of energy even after their full day in the Dungeon.

The staggered War Shadows didn’t take more than a couple of seconds to restart their attack. Multiple of them swarming Elio again as he put himself between Dara and the Party leader. The others, however, simply went around Elio and attacked the leader and Dara directly.

“Burn brightly. Lasair.” Bell spun his staff and the cloud of flames spread, before multiple smaller spheres were formed and then launched at the War Shadows.

Boom

Boom

Boom

Boom

Boom

The smaller fireballs blasted a War Shadow each, thinning out their numbers significantly.

Dara, sporting a few cuts now, let out a war cry as the four War Shadows that had been attacking her had been reduced to one. “HYAH!” She stabbed the last War Shadow through its ‘face’ and then tossed it aside with a small grunt.

The leader swung his sword, decapitating the last two War Shadows he was fighting as three fireballs had reduced his enemies from five down to two. “Fucking things!” He panted out, his face and arms covered in deep cuts from the five-on-one fight.

“Last one!” Elio shouted as he knocked aside the last War Shadow’s claws and then his shortsword flashed upwards to shatter the ‘face’ of the War Shadow. The other five that had been swarming him were dead, smoke rising off their burned corpses.

“Is everyone okay?” The Supporter rushed forward now that the last War Shadow had been slain. Already she was trying to find any spare potions in her pack, but wasn’t having much luck as their Party had already spent the entire day dungeon crawling.

Dara looked at Bell as he approached their Party. Her eyes trailed up and down Bell in his red cloth armor and his hat with the white feather on one side. “Damn…” She whispered under her breath, her cheeks slightly pink.

The leader stepped forward to meet Bell and held his hand out for a handshake. “Thank you for the assistance. We were in real trouble there.”

Bell shook the other man’s hand and gave him a nod and a friendly smile. “Don’t mention it. That was just the right thing to do.” He looked over the injuries of the Party and noticed the Supporter’s downcast expression as she was clearly out of potions.

Elio walked over to Bell and patted him on the back strongly. “Thanks for the healing spell, man! Fixed me right up and even restored my stamina!”

“You’re welcome.” Bell chuckled at the exuberant thanks. “One second.” He raised his staff upwards slightly and began to chant. “Gather the herbs to heal the body. Banish the evils of pain and sickness. Restore the body to wholeness; succeed where the father failed. Heal all who seek wellness. Leigheas!” The pure, clear light washed over all four members of the Party and quickly healed their injuries while restoring their stamina as well. “There we go.” He smiled at seeing all four of them uninjured now.

Dara blinked as she looked herself over for a moment. “Not a mark left…” With a little grin she nearly sauntered up to Bell and leaned forward, blatantly teasing a peek at her cleavage. “Thanks, handsome~”

“Dara…” The leader spoke up with a flat tone.

“Don’t be jealous, Luke. I’m just saying thank you.” Dara giggled at her Party leader.

Luke rolled his eyes and pulled Dara back with a sigh. “Don’t mind her, she just likes to tease.” He told Bell with a lopsided grin. “Anyway, what do we owe you?”

Bell waved that off. “No charge, I’m not working today. This is just doing the right thing.”

“Wait, aren’t you the guy that offers healing outside of Babel every few days or so?” Elio asked, having spotted a small crowd around such a person that looked like Bell.

“That’s me.” Bell confirmed with a smile. “Bell Cranel, a member of Miach Familia.” He took off his hat and held it to his chest as he gave the Party a half-bow, making both Dara and the female Supporter blush at his looks. “If you ever need quality potions, antidotes, Mind potions, monster repellant items, or healing; come see us.” Bell said to the four-man Party, managing to promote his Familia’s services as Naaza had taught him.

“I’ll stop by.” Dara and the Supporter woman said at the same time.

Bell gave the two women a thankful smile as he placed his red, narrow-brimmed hat back on his head. “Please, take care of yourselves and get back to the surface safely.” He nodded to the four-man Party and turned away as he went back on his way towards the stairs to the Fifth Floor.

Luke looked over the twenty dead War Shadows with a chuckle. “Didn’t even ask for the Magic Stones of the War Shadows that he killed.”

“The guy’s a saint!” Elio laughed brightly as he grabbed the arm of a dead War Shadow and started dragging it over to the Supporter.

“Oh!” The Supporter snapped herself out of her brief daze now that Bell was out of sight. “I-I’ll get to work!” She got the knife from her backpack and hurriedly knelt down next to the nearest War Shadow to start harvesting the Magic Stones.

“Miach Familia, huh?” Dara hummed thoughtfully. “I think we should switch which shop we get our potions from, Luke.”

Luke let out a short snort of laughter. “You just want another chance to ogle the guy.”

Dara raised an eyebrow at Luke. “Like you ogle ‘Dea Saint’ and the other girls at Dian Cecht’s pharmacy?”

“…Nuh uh.” Luke looked away and rubbed the back of his head once.

“Hah!” Elio cracked up into laughter as Dara and Luke teased each other.

Bell had no idea that what he’d just done would be shared at the bar the four-man Party usually went to. The story of the Miach Familia’s ‘Red Mage’ saving a Party from a horde of War Shadows would start spreading throughout the various bars and taverns of Orario in only a few hours.

-Blue Pharmacy ~ Late Afternoon-

“I’m home.” Bell said as he opened the front door.

“Welcome home, Bell.” Naaza greeted him with a warm smile before turning back to the current customer at the counter. “Thank you for your patronage.”

The customer, a rather robust Dwarf man, nodded to Naaza with a grin. “I’ll be back when we need more.” He walked towards the door and Bell held it open for him politely. “Thanks lad. Myorn told me to tell you ‘thanks’ again if I saw you.” The Dwarf man chuckled as he carried his large wooden box filled with various potions out the door.

Bell closed the door behind the man and smiled. “Glad that Myorn is doing well.” He walked over to the counter and placed his earning for the day on the counter for Naaza to collect. “Looks like you made a large sale, Naaza.”

Naaza took the sack of Valis coins and smiled warmly at Bell, her ‘sleepy’ look brightening up. “Thanks to you, Bell.” She said with a grin. “Your healing of Adventurers, both outside of Babel and whenever you see someone that needs help, has spread the name of Miach Familia quite well. More and more people are coming to the Blue Pharmacy for their potion and item needs, so we’re making much more money than we used to.”

“Then I’m keeping my promise.” Bell said with a bright smile as he was helping to get his Familia out of debt.

“You are.” Naaza agreed as she leaned over the counter a bit and gave Bell a soft kiss.

Bell leaned into Naaza’s lips, kissing her back before the two pulled away from each other.

Naaza grinned as she stashed the sack of Valis in the small safe under the till. “Put the ‘Closed’ sign on the door, Bell.”

“Right.” Bell quickly walked over to the front door and opened it so that he could hang the sign on the little hook to let anyone coming by know that the Blue Pharmacy was closed for the evening. He closed the door and locked it before turning around, only to find Naaza right in front of him.

Without waiting for Bell to get his bearings, Naaza pressed herself against Bell and kissed his lips again. Bell wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her back, making Naaza’s tail wag happily behind her.

“My room~” Naaza breathed into Bell’s lips as they pulled away from each other and she nearly dragged Bell into the back and down the short hallway.

The door to Naaza’s room closing rather loudly got Miach’s attention from the workroom where he was mixing potions. Poking his head out of the doorway, he quickly realized where his two ‘children’ had likely gone and chuckled. “Bell is good for Naaza.” He returned to his work with a little smile on his face.

-Evening-

After dinner, which Bell had cooked with a bright smile on his face, Miach had offered to give Bell a Status Update. Naturally, Bell had agreed and was now sitting backwards on one of the wooden chairs in the kitchen with his shirt off, allowing Miach to see his bare back.

Miach had the tact to not mention the multiple little ‘love bites’ that Bell had on his neck from his and Naaza’s ‘alone time’ this afternoon. The two clearly hadn’t gone ‘all the way’ yet, but their exploration of each other had clearly taken another step today.

As the familiar blue-white glow appeared from Bell’s back, Miach began the update by watching bell’s Excelia for the day.

“Hmm, I see that you’re getting the hang of your new Skill, Bell.” Miach commented as he saw both Bell’s practice from the early morning, as well as his use of it throughout his day in the Dungeon. “That could…technically…be counted as three different spells already. An arrow, a fireball, and a wall of flame…not many spells have such versatility alone.”

Bell had a small smile from the praise. “Thank you, Lord Miach. I’m glad that it had worked out, so far.” He recalled what Lenoa had said to Riveria and Lefiya back at the ‘Witch’s Secret House’ about being able to cast more than three spells. ‘Surely that was just a joke in bad taste, right? No one would try to come after me just because I can, sort of, cast more than three spells…would they?

Miach saw Bell step in to rescue the four-man Party at the end of his day and a gentle smile crossed his face. “Your consideration for others makes me very proud to have you as part of my Familia, Bell.” He said as he moved the Excelia into Bell’s Basic Abilities and watched the numbers rise rapidly. “You’re already living up to your dream of being a true Hero.”

“Ah, thank you…” Bell couldn’t stop the smile on his face from brightening at the words from Miach. It was what he wanted more than anything, and to hear someone say that he was living up to those lofty ideals and goals only further bolstered Bell’s desire and determination to reach it.

“Here you are, Bell.” Miach handed the new update paper to Bell while locking up his Falna again.

Bell looked at his Status Update and was pleased with his latest growth. “Everything is at ‘C’ Rank now.”

“You’re working very hard, Bell. Both inside the Dungeon and outside on your days off.” Miach said with a little chuckle. “Don’t be doubting all of the effort you’ve put in.”

“Yes, Lord Miach.” Bell said as he looked over the paper one more time before tossing it into the fire in the fireplace. “By the way, Lord Miach, what’s Monsterphilia? I saw posters of it all around the city today.”

Miach perked up a little and gave Bell a grin. “Ah, it’s a yearly festival held by the Ganesha Familia. People from far and wide come to see it every year.” He began to explain, making Bell listen with rapt attention.

The festival was the day after tomorrow, and after hearing about it, Bell was hoping to check it out.

-Next Day ~ Dungeon-

“Hup!” Bell slammed his staff down onto a Killer Ant’s head, cracking the exoskeleton with the force. The ant Monster hit the ground and twitched, only for Bell to slam his staff down atop its fractured head again, killing it. “Killer Ants are definitely tougher than Frog Shooters or War Shadows.” He looked around at the three he’d killed. “Still, they’re uncommon on the Sixth Floor, so I should probably be happy that I can get this experience fighting them in such a small group, instead of a large swarm.”

As Bell harvested the three Killer Ants, he considered his current pace through the Sixth Floor. He’d been making good time through the outer edges of the Floor, making sure to avoid the Pantry for safety. But as he cleared out area after area, he was rather swiftly closing in on the area the map said held the stairs down to the Seventh Floor.

“Hmm, Naaza did say that the Blue Papilio spawn on the Seventh Floor.” Bell hummed as he pulled the Magic Stone out of the second Killer Ant. “Maybe I’ll be able to head down to the Seventh Floor and hunt for a Blue Papilio for her soon.” That thought put a smile on Bell’s face as he moved over to the third Killer Ant.

-Later-

“Burn brightly, Lasair!” Bell cast his spell and shaped the cloud of flame into multiple small fireballs. With a swing of his staff, he sent the fireballs rocketing down the corridor to explode against a group of Frog Shooters. Not giving the flailing and dying Monsters a chance to escape, Bell rushed forward and swung his staff down on the nearest living Frog Shooter, splattering its single eye along with its head.

“Kero!” A Frog Shooter launched itself at Bell, trying to tackle him with its large body.

Bell swung the butt of his staff upwards and slammed it into the bottom of the Frog Shooter’s mouth. The frog Monster was lifted upwards from the force of the blow, allowing Bell to kick it in the stomach, knocking it on its back before he brought his staff down on it powerfully, nearly folding the Frog Shooter in half as blood escaped its gaping mouth. Without missing a beat, Bell backstepped as a slightly burned tongue lashed at where he’d been.

“One left.” Bell noticed that this Frog Shooter was the only one that wasn’t dead. He spun his staff to knock away the second shot from the frog Monster’s tongue and then brought the staff around to slam into the side of the Frog Shooter’s head, splattering the nearby wall with blood and gore from the blow.

With the Frog Shooters dealt with, Bell cleaned off his staff before pulling out his knife to start harvesting the Magic Stones. While mentally going over his spell use and his staff technique against the Frog Shooters.

“I could probably have finished the Frog Shooters off with one spell if I’d put more Mind into it…but my accuracy would’ve probably decreased from the increased force.” Bell hummed thoughtfully as he placed the first Magic Stone in his pouch. “My staff technique wasn’t bad, but it’s a bit difficult to use it effectively against non-humanoid Monsters.” He mulled over how to balance out his magic and melee skills in different situations as he harvested the next Magic Stone.

-Blue Pharmacy ~ Late Afternoon-

Bell walked into the courtyard where his Familia’s Home was located. As he approached the building, he noticed that part of the masonry of the wall near the chimney was cracked badly. “I’ll fix that up after Monsterphilia.” It would only require some mortar and lime plaster, and maybe an hour or so to make it look as good as new.

As he reached the door, Bell stopped and looked at one of the wooden barrels standing next to the wall of one of the large buildings that made up the courtyard that the Blue Pharmacy was in. Taking a few steps closer to the old discarded barrel, Bell inspected the wood and was quickly able to identify what had caught his attention.

“These are arrow marks.” Bell mumbled to himself as he brushed his thumb over one of the small holes. “Has Naaza been practicing her archery?” It was the only thing that came to mind, but as Naaza didn’t go into the Dungeon anymore after losing her arm, it wasn’t often that he saw her use her bow. Deciding to take Naaza’s practice as a positive sign, Bell smiled and walked back over to the front door and opened it. “I’m home.”

“Welcome home, Bell.” Miach greeted Bell with a smile as he was restocking the shelves in the shop. “You’re a little later than normal today.”

Bell smiled at his God. “Sorry, I wanted to get a little extra work in today since I’m taking tomorrow off to go to Monsterphilia.”

Miach chuckled lightly as he finished up what he was doing. “Thank you kindly, Bell. We appreciate your hard work.”

“Something smells good.” Bell sniffed the air with a smile.

“Naaza is making dinner.” Miach said as he and Bell headed for the back, passing through the simple curtain that separated the shop from the living area.

Naaza looked over at the doorway as Bell and Miach entered and gave Bell a warm smile. “Welcome home, Bell.”

Bell returned her smile with his own. “I’m back, Naaza.”

As dinner was set on the table, Bell asked more about Monsterphilia. What it was about, why it had started, and what happened at the festival.

The conversation quickly got a subject that Bell never expected when Naaza brought up the taming of Monsters.

Bell blinked at Naaza, almost in disbelief. “Did you say…taming Monsters?”

“Taming has been recognized as a Skill.” Naaza told Bell with a small grin at his expression. “It depends heavily on the strength of the user, however.”

“So they make Monsters behave with the Taming Skill?” Bell asked, wanting to make sure that he understood properly.

Naaza nodded to him. “Yeah. It’s almost like a circus, but with Monsters rather than regular animals.” She leaned forward a bit, almost laughing as Bell mimicked her unknowingly. “The greatest feat of Taming is when a Monster reaches the level of intelligence required to speak.” Naaza told Bell of the crowning achievement of the Ganesha Familia. “Once a Monster reaches that point, it is given the designation of ‘Xenos’ and becomes a partner to the Ganesha Familia.”

“Monsters that can speak?” Bell was absolutely shocked by such a thing. “They can be taught that?”

“Not all of them.” Naaza shook her head once. But several of them that can have been shown in the past few years at Monsterphilia. The mock battles between the Xenos are a crowd favorite at the festival nowadays. Seeing tamed Monsters up close helps the citizens lose their fear of them. All of the Xenos are given clothing with the Ganesha Familia emblem on it to identify them. If you attack one of them, then it’s considered an attack on the Ganesha Familia. So don’t do that, please.” The Miach Familia REALLY couldn’t afford the fine that they’d be slapped with for attacking a Xenos.

“That’s amazing…” Bell said, his eyes wide at what he’d just learned. Just knowing that some Adventurers had the strength to use a Skill to tame Monsters and make them into companions was crazy. ‘Is there anything the Blessing of the Gods can’t help the people of Gekai do?’ He briefly wondered to himself.

“Speaking of Xenos, if you ever run into a Monster that can speak in the Dungeon, it’s probably a lost Xenos. According to information released by the Ganesha Familia, they can become confused when separated from a Tamer for too long; especially in the Dungeon. If you bring a lost Xenos back to the surface and reunite it with the Ganesha Familia, then they’ll give you a reward.” Naaza explained to Bell, so that he’d understand the Xenos situation as best as he could. “If you look up in the sky, you’ll occasionally see a Xenos flying between the Guild and the Ganesha Familia, especially if there’s some kind of emergency. The Guild has granted the Xenos permission to live on the surface within Orario’s territory as well, as long as they behave and don’t harm anyone. Even just ten years ago the very idea would’ve been ludicrous to anyone in the city. But, so far, it’s actually worked out.”

“Can they ever go back to being regular Monsters?” Bell questioned, wondering if the Taming could wear off.

Naaza shook her head once. “No one has ever seen that happen before. But some people worry that a Tamer with bad intentions could raise a Monster Horde on the surface and cause a lot of damage. That’s why the Guild so heavily monitors anyone with the Skill. For the safety of everyone.”

Bell considered what he’d just learned and nodded after taking it all in. “That makes sense. I’m interested in seeing these Xenos tomorrow, if possible.” Saying that sparked his mind and he looked at Naaza with a smile. “Would you like to go to Monsterphilia with me, Naaza?”

Naaza briefly tensed up, before visibly relaxing. “I wouldn’t mind going to the festival with you, Bell. But I…” She lightly shook her head once. “I’m not ready to see the Xenos up close.”

“Naaza.” Miach gently put his hand on Naaza’s shoulder, offering her support with a soft, understanding smile.

Bell was up and around the table in only a second, gently wrapping his arms around Naaza and holding her. “I’m sorry… I didn’t think.”

“Thank you…” Naaza took comfort from Miach and Bell for a long moment before she spoke again. “The Xenos events usually take place around noon, if I remember correctly.” She looked into Bell’s eyes with a soft smile. “How about we meet up in the afternoon and walk the streets together to check out the rest of the festival?”

“It’s a date.” Bell said with a warm smile.

The way Naaza’s tail started wagging and her fluffy ears perked up was all the indication that Miach needed to understand that Naaza enjoyed the idea of a date with Bell quite a lot.

Yes, these two are definitely good for each other.’ Miach thought to himself with a soft grin.

-Next Morning-

Bell only left the Blue Pharmacy after getting the Status Update from Miach that he’d missed last night while they’d been comforting Naaza from the brief bout of her trauma.

Bell tossed the paper into the fireplace and, after sharing a sweet kiss with Naaza, was out the door. He left the courtyard behind and trotted down West Main Street, heading towards Babel Tower and East Main Street that lay beyond where most of Monsterphilia was happening. His desire to grow and catch up to Ryu continued to burn as he noticed that he was getting close to the Hostess of Fertility. Knowing that she was probably Level 5 (by Tione, Tiona, and Lefiya’s estimation), he knew that he still had a long way to go to reach her. However, he refused to give up, his dream might take a long time to reach, but Bell was determined to become a true Hero.

“Nya! Wait up white-hair!” A female voice called out and Bell stopped instinctively. He knew his hair color was pretty rare outside of older people normally. Looking towards the source of the voice he spotted one of the waitresses standing outside of the Hostess of Fertility.

“Miss Anya?” Bell blinked at the brunette Cat Girl. “Good morning, did you need something?”

“Good morning, sorry for calling out to you like that, nya!” Anya smiled at him brightly. “Here.” She placed a fairly heavy coin purse in Bell’s hands. “Give this to that scatterbrain, okay?”

“Um…?” Bell looked at her confused, wondering what she was talking about.

Ryu walked up to the pair, having heard what Anya had asked of Bell. “Anya, that’s not enough information, Mr. Cranel is confused.”

“You’re so silly, Ryu!” Anya held up both hands with a shrug. “Syr went to Monsterphilia and forgot her wallet. So, I want Bell to take it to her, nya. He knows that much without me saying it.”

“That’s how it is. Sorry for the insufficient explanation the first time.” Ryu gave Bell a short bow. “Would you please accept our request? We are busy with preparations and unable to go ourselves.”

“If it’s you asking, Miss Ryu, then I can’t say no.” Bell smiled at the woman that had saved him from the Minotaur. The one that was his goal as an Adventurer.

Ryu’s expression softened a bit, her cheeks gaining a hint of pink to them, as she gave Bell a small smile. “Thank you, Mr. Cranel.”

Bell couldn’t help but think that Ryu looked even more beautiful when she smiled. “Would Miss Syr be near the large colosseum where the Ganesha Familia slays Monsters for the festival?”

“Adventurers from the Ganesha Familia also tame Monsters taken from the Dungeon, nya!” Anya explained to the new Orario resident.

“Right, Naaza told me about that too.” Bell said with a nod. “I’m still shocked about the tamed Monsters called ‘Xenos’. I didn’t think Monsters could learn to speak and interact like regular people.” He briefly looked up at the sky. “Still haven’t seen any of the flying Xenos in the sky yet.” To be fair, he’d only started looking this morning, as he hadn’t known that they existed before then.

“Anyway,” Anya waved off the talk about the Xenos, refocusing the conversation. “Syr said she’d buy souvenirs, but then forgot her money. Careless kitty!”

“Was buying souvenirs not at your request, Anya?” Ryu reminded the Cat Girl with a blank expression.

Anya pretended not to hear what Ryu had said. “Anyway, Syr just left a bit ago, so you should be able to find her. Nya!”

Ryu gave a half bow to Bell. “We’ll leave her wallet with you, Mr. Cranel.”

“Leave it to me.” Bell smiled at both waitresses before heading off towards the colosseum. He’d look for Syr while taking in the festival before the Xenos events started at noon!

-Later-

Bell looked around, trying to find his way back towards East Main Street. “I really shouldn’t have gotten so caught up in looking for Miss Syr.” He’d thought he’d seen her and followed after the person, only to find out that it was a different woman entirely, leading to him apologizing and then heading off to look around some more.

That had eventually lead him to where he was now. Wandering between a few streets looking for his way back.

“Maybe I should just ask someone?” Bell muttered to himself as he looked both ways down a street.

Crack

BOOM

The sudden noise startled bell as he saw a cloud of dust rising above the rooftops a distance away. As other people panicked, Bell took off towards the area, glad that he was wearing his armor and had his staff with him.

For some reason, Naaza had insisted upon it with a cute little blush on her cheeks this morning.

-A Few Streets Over-

Tione, Tiona, Lefiya, and Ais looked down from the rooftops at what almost seemed like an explosion going off.

Dust clouds hung in the air around the cracked street. A long sinuous body moved around as people yelled in panic and fear. The green skin looked scaly, like a snake, but the ‘head’ was weird, with no visible mouth, eyes, or features of any kind.

“Is that another new species?!” Tiona questioned loudly as none of the four Loki Familia members had ever seen a Monster like it before.

It was a good thing they’d offered to help the Ganesha Familia investigate the reports of strange noises coming from this area. Ais never liked being around the colosseum when the Xenos events were going on anyway, so this was a way to get some distance and still have time to enjoy the festival. To be fair, they’d all mostly expected to find a bunch of drunken festival goers causing a scene, and not a strange new species Monster like this.

“But the other new species were all the way down on the Fiftieth Floor!” Lefiya exclaimed, knowing that new species didn’t appear regularly, and that the vast space between the surface and Fiftieth Floor would be impossible for a Monster of this size to traverse without being noticed in one way or another.

“Ais, use your speed and get the civilians away from that thing!” Tione started giving out orders, having some training in leadership thanks to Finn making her a leader of small squads from time-to-time.

“Yes.” Ais nearly vanished as she blurred towards the people closest to the strange Monster. She grabbed the two people that were within the snake-like beast’s range and dashed away with them quickly.

Tione turned to look at Lefiya next. “Lefiya, look for an opening and start casting!”

“Y-Yes!” Lefiya agreed quickly.

“Tiona, you’re with me! We’re taking this thing head-on until Lefiya’s spell is ready!” Tione told her sister quickly.

“Gaaaahhh!” A Cat Man cried out as the ‘head’ of the Monster rushed towards him.

Tiona and Tione launched themselves off the rooftop so hard that some of the tiles cracked. Both of the Amazons’ eyes almost seemed to glow as they blurred towards the Monster; such was the intensity of their focus. As they rocketed towards the strange new species, Tiona cocked back her left fist, while Tione cocked back her right.

Wham

The ‘head’ of the Monster shattered the street as the twin punches knocked it down. The Cat Man was grabbed by the swift form of Ais and removed from the area a second later.

“Nnnngh.” Tione hissed, raising her right arm above her head, gripping her wrist with her left as her hand throbbed with pain.

“It’s so hard?!” Tiona was hopping in place, cradling her hand which was noticeably bruised.

“Punches aren’t going to get us anywhere!” Tione took up a stance anyway. “This thing is made to withstand blunt force!”

“Gahh! Why didn’t we bring weapons?!” Tiona questioned, only to remember that they’d been having a nice day at Monsterphilia before this; so weapons shouldn’t have been needed.

Seeing the strange Monster distracted, Lefiya began to chant. “Unleashed pillar of light, limbs of the holy tree. You are the master archer. Loose your arrows, fairy archers. Pierce, arrow of accuracy.” She was nearly finished with her chant and the Monster hadn’t noticed her yet. ‘I can take it out before it causes any further damage!

The Monster’s head snapped around and locked directly onto Lefiya.

Crack

The ground next to Lefiya’s feet broke and a green tentacle, or limb, perhaps a tail, slammed into the Elf’s side with a snapping sound. The limb shot up high into the air, sending Lefiya flying into an abandoned stall, collapsing the canvas and wood.

“That thing had a tail?!” Tione nearly cracked a tooth in anger at not having considered that before, trying to get to Lefiya’s side.

Tiona rushed towards their injured friend. “Lefiya!”

The ‘head’ of the weird Monster shuddered, nearly vibrating, for a second before it split and then burst open to reveal a flower with jaws similar to a humans. “ROOOOAAARRRR!!!” The weird Flower Monster roared, briefly revealing that its Magic Stone was attached to the roof of its mouth, as more vine-like limbs burst through the road and swung around.

“It…bloomed?” Tione looked confused by this new species now that it had revealed its true form.

“It’s not a snake…it’s a flower?!” Tiona exclaimed, dodging the rapidly flailing vines that were rising from the ground.

The flower Monster disregarded the Amazon sisters, turning its attention to the downed Lefiya. It slithered towards her, mouth opening, clearly intending to eat the Elf.

“Lefiya! Get up!” Tione called out a warning, trying to force her way through the wriggling vines that had surrounded her and Tione.

“These damn things are in the way!” Tiona punched one of the vines, but even as it was knocked aside, she could tell that it hadn’t really been damaged.

Lefiya seemed to come to, trying to sit up proved to be the wrong move, however. “AAAAHHHH!!!” She cried out in agony, her hand going towards her injured side, clearly something was very wrong to make a Level 3 be nearly unable to move.

But even through the pain, Lefiya tried to get away from the Monster. As it came closer, even as the Elf continued to cry out from the searing pain of her injury, she never stopped trying to get away from it.

The Flower Monster’s head went flying through the air. A clean slice had separated the head from the long, sinuous body in a single strike. Lefiya felt a tear fall from her eye in shame at having to be saved by Ais, again.

Made it.’ Ais let out a breath that she didn’t know she was holding. ‘Pushed a little too hard though.’ She felt her body twinge in pain from blasting all the way back to the battlefield in one burst of her Wind Magic: Ariel. “Lefiya?” She turned to check on her friend.

As if reacting to her presence, three more Flower Monsters burst from the ground, shrieking at Ais. Revealing that the other vines belonged to them and not the first Monster.

Three of them? That won’t be a problem!’ Ais thought as she was surrounded by her Wind Magic while it spun fiercely into a powerful gale. She launched herself forward at the nearest Flower Monster.

Snap

Only for the rapier that she was using to break apart under the power of her Ariel.

The sword… This is its limit.’ Ais realized that she’d once again pushed a weapon too hard and destroyed it. She snapped out of her surprise at the destruction of the sword as the nearest Flower Monster came at her with jaws wide open. With just the hilt and guard of the sword left, she wrapped it in wind and then hammered the Monster into the ground with it. She leapt away and the strange Flower Monster followed after her at speed, targeting her exclusively. ‘Ariel alone isn’t strong enough to kill it?’ It was rare for almost any Monster to survive her magic.

“Now they’re after Ais!” Tiona fought against the lashing vines that were keeping her and Tione from helping their friends. “We’re right here, damn it!” She yelled at the three Monsters.

“That’s it!” Tione figured out the Flower Monsters’ fixation. “It’s magical energy! Ais! They’re attracted to Magic!”

If that’s the case, then I can lead them away from Lefiya!’ Ais used her speed to dodge the three Monsters as they repeatedly came after her.

“Miss Viridis! Miss Viridis!” Bell was at Lefiya’s side, having snuck into the battlefield while the Monsters were distracted, his voice snapping the Elf out of her pain (and shame) filled stupor. “We need powerful Magic!”

“Mr. Cranel…?” Lefiya seemed shocked that he was there and instantly realized that Bell was in danger. “Ah…ugh…y-yes.” She felt her entire body nearly spasm in painful protest as she stood up, allowing Bell to assist her in getting back to her feet as she steeled her resolve and forced herself through her self-doubt. “I am… Lefiya Viridis. An Elf of the Wishe Forest. I swore myself to the Goddess Loki. I am a member of the strongest, proudest Familia!” She leapt forward to get into position, putting herself between Bell and the Monsters, regardless of the screaming pain within her body. ‘I cannot leave my friends behind. I cannot allow Mr. Cranel to be hurt. I will not run away! I refuse!

Bell, seeing the agony that Lefiya was in, took hold of his staff and pointed the white crystal atop it towards Lefiya’s back. “Gather the herbs to heal the body. Banish the evils of pain and sickness. Restore the body to wholeness, succeed where the father failed. Heal all who seek wellness.” The crystal glowed with the pure, clear light as Bell poured his Mind into the spell. “Leigheas!”

“Oh…” Lefiya gasped (almost moaned) as the pleasant feeling of Bell’s magic surrounded her body and the screaming agony in her side quickly disappeared. It felt like something shifted inside of her body as well as the last of the intense pain vanished as if it had never been there.

“Whoa!” Bell ended his spell as Lefiya’s magical power nearly exploded off of her and almost physically forced him backwards.

“I wish upon the name of Wishe.” Lefiya began her incantation, an orb of light appearing at the tip of each of her index fingers. She moved them through the air as her own Magic Circle glowed beneath her feet thanks to her Mage Developmental Ability. From the small glowing orbs upon her fingertips, magical script was written into the air. “Ancestors of the forest, proud brethren. Answer my call and descend on the plains. Connecting bonds, the pledge of paradise.” The circle of glowing script was almost complete as Lefiya turned back to face the Monsters. “Turn the wheel and dance. Come, ring of fairies. Please – Give me strength.” She brought her hands together in front of her and the two glowing orbs merged into one, the script in the air turning into a bright ring of light. “Elf Ring!”

Bell was amazed by the sheer magical power that Lefiya was releasing, but his rubellite eyes watched everything without blinking.

“Lefiya?!” Tione called out, feeling the intensity of Lefiya’s magic even from a distance.

“Oh wow!” Tiona blinked as the Flower Monsters rushed towards Lefiya, completely ignoring her.

All three of the Flower Monsters lunged for Lefiya, slithering across the ground rapidly with their jaws gaping wide as they screeched and roared.

I am not afraid.’ Lefiya stared at the approaching Monsters unflinching. ‘Everyone is with me.

“STAY DOWN!!!” Tiona and Tione roared as they and Ais came down on the three Monsters from behind. Each girl slammed a powerful blow into the head of one of the Flower Monsters, cratering the pavement with their large heads from the force.

They’ll protect me.’ Lefiya knew this to be true, more than anything. ‘And I will save them!’ The Elf declared to herself absolutely. “Harbinger of the end, the white snow.” Lefiya’s Magic Circle glowed brightly as it changed to match the color of Riveria’s. “Blow with the wind before the twilight. Closing light, the freezing land. Blizzard, the three severe winters - my name is Alf!” Lefiya held up her right hand as Ais, Tione, and Tiona leapt off the heads of the Flower Monsters letting them move again. “Wynn Fimbulvetr!”

“RAAAHHH!!!” The three Flower Monster roared, but it was too late.

White.

Bell blinked, but all he saw for a moment was white.

The magical energy died down and other colors came into view.

“Amazing…” Bell could only stare at the mass of ice in front of Lefiya, all three of the Monsters were frozen like sculptures now.

“Nice one, Lefiya!” Tiona yelled out, coming down from their jump to get out of the way of the powerful spell.

Tione nearly growled at the frozen Monsters. “You’ve caused us enough trouble, you damn weeds!”

The two sisters landed easily on the ground before launching themselves at the ice. Tione and Tiona stomped hard on the ground right before they reached their target and each sister raised one of their legs high into the air in perfect synchronicity. They brought their heels down on the frozen Monsters and the entire mass of ice shattered from the force of their combined axe kicks.

They’re so powerful!’ Bell thought as he saw the power of the Amazon twins on full display. ‘Flexible too…’ A different part of his brain filed that image away for later.

The remaining fragments of ice and frozen Monster were shredded into snow as Ais landed on them with her Wind Magic going at full power. The magical wind tossed the snow around, the sunlight sparkling off the white flakes made all of the girls look beautiful in Bell’s eyes as it floated around them.

“Thanks, Lefiya, you saved our butts!” Tiona hugged Lefiya with a bright smile for the Elf.

“T-Tiona!” Lefiya was always a bit flustered by how physically affectionate the Amazon was.

“Thank you, Lefiya.” Ais smiled at her friend. “You looked just like Riveria…amazing.”

“Ais…” Lefiya flushed at the praise, especially being compared to Riveria, and the fact that it came from her idol! “Ais… May I… Go with you in the Dungeon?”

“…Sure. Let’s go anytime, Lefiya.” Ais smiled at the Elf.

“Okay!” Lefiya agreed, happy little tears at the corners of her eyes.

“Speaking of thanks…” Tiona turned to Bell with a warm smile. “Bell!” She nearly pounced on him. “Thanks for healing Lefiya!” She wrapped him in a hug and nuzzled against him adorably.

“N-No problem, Tiona…” Bell replied, needing a second for his brain to kick in as Tiona pressed herself against him.

Tione looked Bell up and down in his new armor. “You really helped out, Bell.” She said with smile that bordered on sultry. ‘He looks REALLY good in that armor~’ The red cloth, the hat with the white feather, it just worked with Bell’s white hair and rubellite eyes.

Bell smiled at Tione. “I was just close by and wanted to do whatever I could.”

“M-Mr. Cranel…” Lefiya stepped forward before Tione could copy Tiona and try to hug Bell as well. She was blushing a dark red as she also took in Bell’s appearance. ‘Wh-What is wrong with m-me? Mr. Cranel’s cloth armor just makes him look so…dashing~’ Lefiya barely managed to snap herself out of her thoughts before she started fantasizing. “Thank you very much for your assistance!” She bowed almost a full ninety degrees.

“I’m just glad that I could help you, Miss Viridis.” Bell told Lefiya honestly, a warm smile on his face. “If you’re still feeling any pain, I can cast my spell again.”

Lefiya almost said ‘yes’ right away, barely managed to stop herself, just because she liked how Bell’s magic felt as it healed her. “N-No, I’m fine now, Mr. Cranel.” Her cheeks were adorably red as she looked into Bell’s rubellite eyes. “And…please, I insist that you call me Lefiya, from now on.”

Bell nodded, a gentle smile on his face that Lefiya found she really liked, before he spoke. “Then feel free to call me Bell, Lefiya.”

“Y-Yes… Of course!” Lefiya nodded, feeling like her head would start to steam if she got any more flustered. It already felt like her heart was thundering in her chest and a sensation like butterflies fluttering about had filled her tummy.

“We’re injured…” Tiona mentioned as she held up her fists, showing the bruising on them from where she’d punched the strange Flower Monsters.

Tione held up her own hands as well, showing the bruises that she’d gotten. “Yeah, those things were really hard.”

Bell had one hand gently cupping each of the sisters’ hands not even two seconds later. “Gather the herbs to heal the body. Banish the evils of pain and sickness. Restore the body to wholeness, succeed where the father failed. Heal all who seek wellness. Leigheas!” The soft light, pure and clear as always, covered Tione and Tiona’s hands.

“Mmm~” Tione hummed lowly as the pain in her hands vanished almost instantly.

“Hehe... It feels nice~” Tiona giggled as she swayed a little on her feet.

Bell smiled as he pulled his hands away, only for Tiona and Tione to take hold of his hands with their own, prolonging their contact. Lefiya pouted cutely at Tione and Tiona getting so close with Bell. Ais tilted her head at the scene, wondering why her three friends all seemed to want Bell to touch them with his magic.

The sudden sound of footsteps alerted the group to the arrival of the Ganesha Familia’s forces. Along with Loki leading the charge while calling out for ‘her girls’ to be safe as she’d ‘brought the cavalry’.

Naaza’s going to be mad at me.’ Bell realized as he was quickly being questioned by the members of the Ganesha Familia and the Guild employees that had followed behind them. ‘And I never did find Miss Syr either…

The rizz is too powerful!

Bell is making the ladies swoon!

Monsterphilia was going well enough…until it wasn’t.

Lefiya gets support from Bell, his powerful healing magic fixing the severe injury that she received for the Flower Monsters! Then she turned them into ice sculptures for DARING to threaten her friends…and crush.

Bell has learned to used his Spell Control Skill to alter the form of his spells and increase their range and how they work, while retaining their basic function. Quite powerful as Bell is basically making ‘pseudo/sub spells’ for his magic! Me thinks that might attract some attention by itself…possibly negative attention.

But it also MIGHT get the attention of an adorable little Bi-Elf Disaster too! Hehehe~

Lefiya, Tiona, and Tione seems to enjoy the feel of Bell’s magic on them too. Like he needed any help keeping their attention. Kek!

What will happen next for Red Mage Bell?

Keep reading to find out!

Let me know what you thought!

Until next time, later!

Comments

Not really, as Taming isn't the style of Adventurer that Bell is. However, the Xenos will come into play in various Danmachi stories at the right time.

Kairomaru

Happy you enjoyed it! Reputation is growing for our Red Mage, yes!

Kairomaru

Question, have you ever really considered applying the tamer skill in any of your Danmachi stories? I say this because I think I’ve read all of your Danmachi stories, and they all have in common that on the day of the Monsterphilia the Xenos are explained to us. I think it would be amazing to see that skill used in one of the many familias of Orario. Can you imagine Bell taming the minotaur he’s supposed to kill, or even better, the minotaur helping Bell in the battle against the Goliath?

Ney Ponton

Very good chapter, I like how Bell is gradually increasing his reputation. I’m sure that at this pace, the debt they have will soon be a thing of the past.

Ney Ponton

You're welcome! Glad you liked it!

Kairomaru

Thanks for the chapter!
