What new technology wowed you?

They say that the world is changing every day and that technologies that used to be spectacular can quickly become commonplace. What new technology wowed you when it first came out?

I remember being a little kid in the early 2000s. I think it was late 2003 when my family got the first DVD player we ever owned and hooked it up to our old TV. This was before plasma screens and flat screens were everywhere. One of my clearest memories was when I held the DVD and couldn’t believe that a whole movie could be watched on it.

I also remembered being utterly confused when I held a DVD for Disney’s “The Great Mouse Detective”, even more confused at the concept of a DVD menu as my brothers and I waited for Dad to figure it out, then shocked and happy to learn that unlike VHS, we didn’t need to rewind the tapes once we were done watching a movie. Back then, my family and I had an entire drawer filled to the brim with VHS tapes, and one of the rules was that we had to rewind it at the end of watching a movie, which could take time if the movie was long, so imagine our elation at DVDs.

How about you? What new technology wowed you when it first came out?

Computers and Robots. From when I was a small child (born 1960) I had a fascination with Robots and computers. I made Robots out of cardboard erc. In my early teens that changed to computers and electronics. I watch as the Alrair 8080 was made, followed by Apple etc. In my 20's I saw the IBM PC. I never specialised but spread my talents through all aspects of computing. I wrote self modifying code in the early 80's. Created networks before networks were common. I created so many technologies to fix problems.. and then saw them become mainstream. I.. Just never published them :( And others created them as they work for larger more profitable companies. I have always dreamed that our Silicon Children would mature so I can talk with them - and let them tell me how the universe looks through their senses.
