How did you explain to friends/family members you’re a furry?

When I was 18 and in my final year of high school, I desperately wanted to go to Midwest Furfest for the first time and experience a furry convention. So when my mom and dad asked me what I wanted to do for my 18th birthday, I asked if they could take me to MFF 2014 in December, which then required me to explain what the furry fandom was and what the convention centered around. Luckily, neither of my folks had heard of the negative stereotypes about furries, so all I needed to do was say that it involved anthropomorphic animals and cartoon animals. After our conversation, all I needed to do was instruct them on where and when the convention was and they planned a Chicago vacation around that so that they could explore the city while I had fun at the convention center. Ended up being a great introduction to the fandom. :)
