"Ember's Last Stand": a 1,000 word story

This can range between different genres and tones, but I decided to do this for my Tier I and Tier II patrons who might be interested in reading more of my works.
This week's story is "Ember's Last Stand", a short story I wrote years ago I decided to remaster and update. It's a short dystopian vignette I wrote for a high school class I know you'll enjoy. I sure did like rewriting this.
