This is still early and pretty rough. I plan to add additional animations and effects, and the audio isn't complete yet so it's muted. There are bugs and some weird issues here and there, too. This is the general idea, though.
You stack auras on yourself and enemies. Different spells have different effects on auras, for example, some can convert one type of aura to another, others can grant bonus stacks when certain conditions are met. All auras can be stacked up to 99 (this is unrealistic with most, though), and everyone loses one stack of each aura at the end of every round.
Different spells can also consume auras to boost the spell's effects. For example, in the video, the "Cleave" spell consumes all wound stacks to boost its own damage. The "Lance" spell grants around 20 stacks of wound when the target has less than 10 stacks, but otherwise only grants 3-6. The "Fangs" spell only grants a small number of stacks, but is enhanced when the target has more than 25 wound stacks.
My goal was to make each spell feel a bit like a card in a TCG, and the idea of "counters" in those kinds of games was one of the inspirations for this concept. In addition to being able to equip two (later in the game, three) different schools of magic, you will also have different daggers with different effects, and accessories.
Items are not in the game right now, but some will be added, mostly MP restoratives, but with a handful of weirder things too.
On top of auras, you can also see the deflection system at work here! It's possible to get through most fights in Hex without taking a single point of damage, though you can only deflect physical attacks. Mages will need to be suppressed with the "sanction" aura to easily deal with.
Note: Sorry for the double post, the video didn't attach correctly to the last one.
