Rompopolo has one of my favorite designs despite also having one of my least favorite fights

2025-04-06 01:02:43 +0000 UTCI made a comment on one of iamthekiajuking's posts regarding Rompopolo, which I think might be more relevant here for ecology purposes. IATKG said that "Apparently they’re also found in bogs in the old world." I speculated that some Rompopolo ancestors got lucky by finding the Oilwell Basin; like the Rotten Vale, the locale seemingly has an abundance of edible matter virtually everywhere, but the basin is far more hospitable to new settlers compared to the literal death valley in the New World. Further, Nu Udra (the top predator of the basin) seemingly is not too active (or even present) outside of the Firespring, which itself is more recent than the basin itself due to it being the only inclemency that has to be manually activated by the human inhabitants. I'm no ecologist, but I think that it is plausible that our mosquito-looking (until it opens it's beak) brute wyvern essentially stumbled on the Oilwell Basin, a productive habitat with minimal predation risk, allowing for the wetland-adapted specie to thrive in relative sanctuary. In comparison, perhaps the Rompopolo we would meet in the Old Swamp, if present, are actual subspecies or would be misclassified as variants due to some significantly distinct adaptations to living in a more predator-dense locale. In particular, a Rompopolo subspecies/variant which is significantly more toxic, with the gas explosions it causes actually inflicting poison, would have some good ecological groundwork. It would be a much better reasoning for stronger poison in a subspecies or variant compared to what we get for Purple Gypceros (actually, Rompopolo and Gypceros share quite a bit of habitat overlap, though idk if they are competing for the same resources within the old swamp). The Old Swamp is home to Shogun Ceanataur and Nargacuga, both of which could lkely predate an adult Rompopolo. Meanwhile, both Khezu and Gendrome may pose a threat to juveniles. Further, the trademark Brute Wyvern aggression may have evolved in Rompopolo not only for territoriality, but due to an evolutionary history of far more predation pressure. With the lack of predators in the basin, perhaps a decrease in toxicity occurred, but the aggressiveness remained. With all that sad, the Oilwell Basin being a comparative haven for them sounds quite plausible.
