“Please milady, we could truly use your aid.”

Their voices scraped her nerves raw, but Lady Allanie was sworn to protect the serfs of this land. She sighed and gently pulled her mare to a stop. The midnight black thoroughbred was trained for war, and she snorted, as if she too felt the villagers were wasting her time.

Allanie turned and looked them over. The one who seemed to speak for them all stepped forward. His moss green tunic was good wool edged in silk, and his leggings were unpatched and smooth. This was no beggar. He took his cap in his hand as he approached, revealing ebony curls, before laying one hand on her stirrup in the customary gesture of submission.

“Thank you for hearing us milady. We have a need of a Knight of Ramora, for our dilemma is most dire.”

The Lady Knight tried to arrange her face into something more charitable. It could not be called a smile, for a temper honed in battle had busked that away, but it was a softening of sorts.

“How can I turn down such a pretty request?” She said, lifting her helm and tucking it under her arm. Her blue hair tumbled free in a cascade of short braids. Some of the other villagers caught their breath at the sight, clearly in awe of this majestic warrior atop her mighty steed. The poor were often romantics, she’d found.

“What ails your village, that you have need of a knight of the Queen?”

“I am Tren, milady, and I am the mayor here. My natural father is Duke Hendrs. Might we retire to The Court to discuss this in private?”

Allanie was taken aback, though her face and posture did not show it. A mayor would normally send word to his lord if there was an issue. It was also rare to find a bastard elevated to such a lofty position. He was wise to use his father’s name, knowing it would pique her interest. She inclined her head, and followed the man into the village proper. The people there drew back, startled when they saw her, and many, too meek for her glory, she imagined, ran back into the hovels they called homes.
