I love this episode! Touch grass, read a book, hump your couch, and why did Mum and Dad ever get divorced?!

Firmly closed doors give you the freedom to turn away from something - ONE thing - and turn toward every other possibility.

So much wisdom and such a wide lens perspective from Ashley. I’m in awe. Alayna, you are so relatable for me as a queer overachiever. Thank you all for this podcast. 💕

PhD candidate here! Ashley's reference to the "if there's anything else you can do to live happily, do that" quote truly does apply to PhDs. Oftentimes, they are tough and grueling even for people who REALLY want the PhD, and worse for those who don't feel dead set on it. If Alayna does decide she wants to teach at some point down the road, she will likely be able to be a teaching professor or lecturer without a PhD. Also, I just went through a very similar situation to Alayna, but rather than not being accepted to an MA program, I was rejected from a job as a professor. It took me 2 days to tell my partner that a tiny part of me felt relieved when I didn't get it. Similarly to Alayna, part of the reason I wanted to get a PhD and be a professor was because I have always been a high achiever and doing "the most" has been my default setting. I'm trying to tap into what I truly want to do now, rather than letting fear pave my path. Alayna, thank you for sharing your thoughts and making me feel less alone! I am STOKED to listen to every episode of your podcast.
