Grand Game 579: Gray, Black, and Blue

Note from Tom: This the final chapter of Book 8. I hope everyone enjoyed the story. Let me know what you think of the book and the ending :)
______________________________________________

I spun around, fleeing once more, with Ghost by my side. But this time, I didn’t plan on going far. Drawing psi, I began renewing my buffs.

The three harbingers raced down the hill, moving faster over land than their passage through the water suggested they were capable of. Blue came straight on, while Black veered left and Gray cut to the right.

A classic flanking maneuver.

I slowed a touch, deliberately allowing the trio to catch up as we headed toward our ambush spot—which was the selfsame spot Elise, Ghost, and I had used during our training. I timed it just right too, and as we reached the center of the shallow dip, we found ourselves surrounded.

You have cast wind daemon.

Ghost and I skidded to a halt.

The three half-cats prowled closer.

“Why does it smell so funny here?” Gray muttered, lowering his head to sniff at the ground.

Blue ignored him. “This is the end of the line,” she crooned.

“It is,” I replied impassively, “but not the way you mean.” Drawing stamina, I cast.

You have cast vanish. You are invisible. Duration: 5 minutes.

Ghost has unmanifested.

3 hostile entities have failed to detect you.

Ghost and I disappeared simultaneously, leaving the harbingers absent of any targets.

The creatures reacted quickly. Springing forward from a standing start, Blue landed on the spot Ghost had so recently occupied and found… nothing.

Copying her, Gray and Black charged my last known location. But they were a hair’s breadth too slow. I’d already shifted position, leaving the duo with nothing but air to find.

Drawing psi, I retreated steadily.

“Find him!” Blue screeched.

I laughed, using ventro to cause my voice to emerge twenty yards away from my actual location. The trio spun around at the sound, giving me the previous few seconds I needed to complete my spell.

You have cast slaysight.

A level 341 stygian harbinger has resisted your spell.

A level 301 stygian harbinger has resisted your spell.

A level 303 stygian harbinger has partially resisted your spell.

You have paralyzed 1 of 3 targets for 30 seconds.

“Now,” I instructed, speaking rapidly to the others across the farspeaker bracelet. “Leave the black one, Saf. It’s disabled.”

Blue and Gray, meanwhile, had realized something was amiss. Striding up to Black’s side, Blue nudged him—hard.

The harbinger toppled over.

Blue spun around to face Gray. “Oblivion!” she ordered. “Now!”

Paying the harbingers no heed, I concentrated on my next casting. At the same time, the rest of the ambush team finally made their presence known.

Adriel has dispelled a tier 6 concealment field.

Adriel has cast blood of the dead. Blood of the dead is a lesser blood memory that resurrects the remains of any recent dead in the vicinity, up to a maximum of 100, transforming them into a ghostly army that fights on the caster’s behalf.

Adriel has raised the ghosts of 25 nagas and 75 hydras to fight on her behalf.

Ceruvax has cast rampaging pack. Rampaging pack is a greater blood memory that buffs all allies around the caster in a 100 yard radius, adding fire damage to their attacks. Rampaging allies will deal 3x fire damage in addition to their normal attacks.

You are now rampaging (will deal 3x fire damage). Duration: 2 minutes.

Safyre has cast tornado of light. Tornado of light is a tier 5 Force ability that traps a single target in a vortex of light for 30 seconds, dealing sustained light damage to it.

A level 301 stygian harbinger has partially resisted a tornado of light and is storm trapped. Duration (reduced): 10 seconds.

“Focus your attacks on the gray and black ones!” I yelled as surging winds of pure Light descended from the skies and plucked Gray off the ground. “Get gray and black,” I added for the benefit of Farren and Adriel who were not on the farspeaker network. “You have ten seconds.”

My own spell completed, and I released it too.

You have activated fearsome aura. Range: 23 yards.

1 of 3 foes have failed a mental resistance check!

A level 303 stygian harbinger has been petrified (frozen in fear and unable to act).

My jaw snapped close in frustration as fearsome aura affected the same target as paralyze, leaving Blue unaffected.

But I had more cards to play. Darting forward, I leaped. “The blue one is mine,” I snarled, weaving stamina as I rushed through the air. “Ghost, take Black.”

“On it, Prime.”

You have cast ponderous step. You are now heavy (causing the ground to shake with each step) Duration: 1 minute.

Ghost has cast explosive manifest.

Farren has cast scythes of darkness. Scythes of darkness is a lesser blood memory that manifests 2 dark blades into being for 1 minute.

As I arced through the air toward my target, I spotted the archlich’s summoned blades appearing over Gray who was still trapped in Safyre’s tornado. First one blade, then the other slashed down.

A dark scythe has critically injured a stygian harbinger.

A dark scythe has critically injured a stygian harbinger.

Adriel’s ethereal army was moving too. Their limbs and jaws glimmering red—courtesy of Ceruvax’s buff—they passed through Blue to converge on the paralyzed and petrified Black. Ghost was already there, attacking the helpless harbinger with tooth and claw and raking deep furrows in his sides. The female harbinger, meanwhile, was still casting, her lips moving rapidly.

But I soon put a stop to that.

Passing through the top of my arc, I rushed groundward. At the last second Blue looked up, sensing something amiss. But by then it was too late, and I landed directly atop the harbinger. The breath whooshed out of her lungs and her limbs splayed outward as she collapsed beneath my overbearing weight.

I didn’t give her a chance to recover.

Bringing my clawed right foot down, I swatted Blue across the face. At the same time, I closed my jaws over the back of her neck.

A level 341 stygian harbinger has partially resisted your stunning paw and has been stunned for 2 seconds.

A stygian harbinger has failed to resist lacerating bite.

Your target is bleeding. Duration: 23 seconds.

I didn’t release my hold on Blue’s neck. Instead, I ground my teeth further into the wound I’d already inflicted, gnawing deeper. Nor did I let up with my paw attacks. My clawed forepaw rising and falling, I kept swatting at the downed harbinger.

Ceruvax has ordered a naga to attack a level 301 stygian harbinger.

Farren has ordered 18 undead nagas to attack a level 301 stygian harbinger.

I acknowledged the Game messages with barely a flicker of emotion. At this point, the introduction of Farren and Ceruvax’s minions was overkill.

This battle could have only one outcome.

✵ ✵ ✵

The three harbingers put up surprisingly little fight.

It appeared I had misjudged my own strength and that of my allies. Even without Adriel and Farren using their strongest spells—as death casters themselves, the three stygian Powers were immune to the lichs’ death magic—we still managed to keep the harbingers disabled for prolonged stretches of time.

Or perhaps it was simply surprise that carried the day.

Gray, Black, and Blue did not manage to get off a single spell, and it was possible the complexion of the battle would have changed completely if they had. But I doubted it. We were prepared for the harbingers’ death magic.

In any case, the end proved anticlimactic, with alert after alert scrolling through my mind while my foe lay largely senseless beneath me. But eventually, the Game messages I was waiting for arrived.

You have killed a level 341 stygian harbinger.

You and Ghost have reached level 273!

Your dodging has reached rank 23, your two weapon fighting rank 21, and your thieving rank 18.

Ghost’s death magic has reached rank 14 and her nether manipulation rank 13.

You’ve slain a tier 7 creature, deepening your Power Mark.

Congratulations, Michael! You have slain your 3rd tier 7 creature, thereby advancing another step down the paths of Power and acquiring the Powerful Acolyte Mark.

As a result of your new Power Mark, your higher evolution trait has advanced to higher evolution II. This trait allows you to evolve your ascendant Class to rank 2. But before you can do so, you must either deepen your Wolf Mark further or reach level 300. Note, once you acquire a legendary Class you will be prohibited from attacking players who themselves do not bear a Power Mark.

I stepped off the dead harbinger, my muzzle bloody and dripping gore. Looking up, I surveyed the battlefield.

The others were still fighting Gray and Black but appeared to have matters well in hand. Ghost had her jaws locked around Black’s throat while the undead nagas and Adriel’s ghosts beat at him. Farren, Ceruvax, and Safyre, meanwhile, were pounding Gray with spells.

“Michael?”

My head turned westward. The call had come from Anriq, speaking to me through the farspeaker bracelet. “What is it?”

“I’m not sure,” he replied uncertainly. “But I think something is happening with the tree.”

I inhaled sharply. “He has joined the battle?”

“He—? Never mind. But, no, that’s not it. The ground around the Power is churning. And I think I see… roots.”

“Roots?” I repeated blankly. “Why would—”

I broke off, realization dawning.

The tree was uprooting itself. I’d seen the sapling in Draven’s Reach do the same thing. And the fact that the tree was digging himself up could mean only one thing.

He had decided to run.

I was sure of it. Despite the void tree’s earlier evinced arrogance and all his talk of ‘alone sufficing,’ Blue’s death must have shook him.

“They’re definitely roots,” Anriq added, unaware of my churning thoughts. “More have appeared, lots more.”

“It’s not just that,” Nyra commented. “The Power is rising too.”

“The trees can fly?” a baffled Terence asked. “Why didn’t it do that before?”

“He’s fleeing,” I said numbly.

“Fleeing?” Teresa asked skeptically. “Why would you think that? Maybe it’s on its way to help the harbingers.”

“He’s not,” I said confidently.

Sector 18,240 was not Draven’s Reach. It was a Kingdom sector and only reachable by the void through a rift—the very same rift that the young tree was anchoring.

Or had been anchoring.

Because there was a cost to a tree uprooting itself in a Kingdom sector. And that cost was the rift linking the sector to the Nethersphere. Without young void tree’s roots to anchor it, the rift would not be able to sustain itself.

I lifted my gaze to the rift peaking above the top of the intervening foothills. It had shrunk—was shrinking still. The change was noticeable, leaving me in doubt that the rift was contracting. Its closure was inevitable.

And that meant we’d won.

No matter what happened from this point onward, the rift would close, the safe zone would reappear, and the mists would vanish.

Most importantly, though, it meant the sector was ours to claim.

But…

I couldn’t see the tree, but I knew that he wouldn’t be uprooting himself if he didn’t think he could traverse the rift before it was destroyed. The last thing the stygian Power wanted was to be stuck on this side of the rift with the foes that had hurt him so much.

The void tree was going to flee to sector 30,199.

Where even now the brotherhood was likely still embroiled in battle. The stygian Power would drop out of the rift and directly into their midst, leaving him close enough to strike at the brotherhood’s army with his powerful mental abilities.

Enthralling some.

Killing others.

Doing to them the things we had been so careful not to let him do to our own forces. Even if the brotherhood managed to kill the void tree, they would lose hundreds in the process.

Turning my head to the left, my gaze found Safyre where she stood beside Ceruvax, Farren, and Adriel. I could see from her expression she already knew what I intended.

“I have to chase after him.”

She sighed. “I agree. We can’t let the brotherhood pay for our failures.”

I’d promised Kartara that her people would not have to face the void tree. Knowing the huntmistress, she and her people likely already had contingencies in place for such a scenario.

But no contingency was perfect.

And while many of the brotherhood might get away, many more would still die. Their deaths would be on my head. “Unmanifest, Ghost. We have other prey to hunt,” I said quietly before turning back to Safyre. “You know what to do.”

She nodded. “We will see the sector claimed.”

There were other things I wanted to say, but this was not the time for a protracted goodbye. Leaving things as they were, I dashed up the slope of the western hill, spinning psi as I went.

Ghost has unmanifested.

Cresting the rise, my eyes darted to my distant foe.

The void tree was fully airborne now and, flying fast, was almost at the rift. I couldn’t delay. Releasing the weave I held ready, I blinked out of existence.

You have teleported into the shadow of a level 340 young void tree.

I emerged from the aether, nestled amongst the tree’s branches once more, and not a second too early, either.

A heartbeat later, the tree made contact with the dark doorway and our transition into the void began.

You have entered a rift.

Leaving sector 18,240 of the Forever Kingdom.

Transfer commencing…

Sorry, I posted the second set before I saw your post and didn't see a reason to just delete it. I mean, it wasn't really repeating anything I'd said but rather adding additional context for my initial statement. I should have added an edit maybe.

David Brewer

I was saying I agree. When u put it that way it makes perfect sense.

obiwann

Don't get me wrong, the brotherhood likely will prove to be allies at some point in the future. Explaining his situation after being forced to admit he underestimated the tree's ability to escape and endangering key brotherhood soldiers isn't a good look. Besides, once the rift began to shrink the brotherhood could reasonably assume the tree was beaten and thus their presence wasn't required any longer. But that would require they managed to finish off the stygians in sector 30199 near the rift so they could safely withdraw... mainly the final Harbinger of course. And they'd probably hide the corpse to return in a few days and "rescue" Michael then. Hence my opinion of why it's the "best" outcome.

David Brewer

…. Well when u put it THAT way….🤣

obiwann

That's the point. A person would need to use doppelganger (mimic isn't enough given the non humanoid shape) a rank 6 ability (level 250) to hide spirit signatures in that situation. And no stygian would be expected to attack a tree... and maybe can't. The Brotherhood's "tamed" stygians as a possible exception. Especially not the "favored". Thus seeing a level 302 "Harbinger" attacking a void tree... the most obvious assumption is a high level deception player. They "know" Michael is a deception player, given his possession of a netherstone they likely assume he's notably above level 200, and the timing of the tree arriving while being attacked during the planned fight in both sectors means that presuming the fake Harbinger is Michael is reasonable. And again, at the end of book 8, he was wearing the brotherhood farspeaker... so even if the brotherhood redeploy when they notice the rift shrinking... he's fairly likely to try and send a warning to get them away from the tree.

David Brewer

as the creature he wouldn’t have a spiritual signature

obiwann

Hah, you're making the mistake of thinking the tree cares about the lesser stygians. He cares about "his" nagas and himself. As for not knowing it's Michael... how many people do you think the brotherhood expects to encounter in a nethersphere sector fighting the young void tree that just came through the closing rift? Oh and are able to convincingly hide spirit signatures? Yes, if he doesn't own up to it... they won't be certain it's him. But come on? They'll "know". Besides, he almost wouldn't have a choice but to admit it. If they haven't left he'll need to use the speaker bracelet they gave him to get them clear the moment he passes through the rift to minimize the losses. And then... well the easiest thing would be to leave wolf form to portal out as they still have his netherstone.

David Brewer

I didn't relize it had verbal components, thx

Yep

It doesn’t have the power to chain cast psychic screams again … if it does and kills all the lesser Stygian again it will definitely die. And the brotherhood will not know it’s Michael unless he wants them to.

obiwann

The 3-in-one set isn't getting completed anytime soon. It is literally unique because the creator died after making 1 set. Michael "knows" where the other 2 pieces are... but the Power that has them will likely surrender them when Michael takes them from his cooling corpse... and would stop trying to find Michael and claim all 3 for himself only after his final death (maybe on his last life). But yes, given the current situation and pace it would be nice to see some details about how gear tiering works.

David Brewer

I'm interested in seeing the shocked faces of his old "friends" too. As for timelines... it's been roughly 2 years since Michael arrived in the Forever Kingdom. He spent a year in stasis, and he spent months lost on the tundra. I'm not sure Tom has ever been precise about how long he was lost... but I think it's somewhere between 18-24 months total.

David Brewer

I mean, who's to say she isn't being forced to work WHILE being imprisoned.

David Brewer

I think the present speculation is not that the chalice came from House Death but rather that they obtained it from their "new" super amazing dungeon sectors.

David Brewer

Honestly that would probably be one of the best outcomes. Michael won't have any difficulty surviving in sector 30199 for a few days, running and hiding from the mature tree if nothing else. It avoids the awkward moments of the brotherhood realizing that Michael has a serious shape-shifting ability... because they almost certainly will realize the basilisk wolf isn't something a human can create with doppelganger thus he has an ability that lets him become much larger. It would also minimize the losses incurred by the brotherhood from the tree's arrival in the sector. I suspect the tree will not be eager to fight upon arrival given that it's reasonably injured and can't be certain it can easily force Michael to back off (although chain cast psychic screams would probably work). So it's likely the tree will order any surviving stygians near the rift to attack him and try to escape to the older tree. But that wouldn't stop it from mind controlling or death magic murdering members of the brotherhood as it runs. Also, if they've left they have probably hidden the harbinger's corpse and will return themselves a day or two later to claim the netherstone.

David Brewer

They tried but because of the verbal components, when the team debuffed them, it broke their spell casting. Michael lands on Blue with ponderous step to stop her casting.

Majestic Bacon

I don't understand why the harbingers didn't cast oblivion, it doesn't take that long, does it? And nothing said it was disrupted.

Yep

What happens if the brotherhood already left the battlefield? Without the netherstone Michael can’t portal out… effectively trapping him there until Safyre can claim a sector and then summon him for its defense. 😳. With all the planning they did beforehand, you would think there would be a contingency. Big risk here

obiwann

Once again another awesome book. Thanks for the story and I can't wait to see how this fight ends!

CM

Another great book. I still. Enjoy them after 8 of them. Keep up the great work.

Emiel de Jonge

I’m currently rereading Book 4, so I just went through the chapters where Loken gives Michael the task of stealing the chalice from the dark power Paya. He specifically emphasized that he couldn’t steal the chalice himself because it could only be touched by darksworn Players Powers or at least by players who were neither Light nor Shadow-sworn. Later, Farren speculated that this chalice must be important and that Loken wouldn’t be interested in destroying it without a good reason. That got me thinking—could this chalice be a source of power for House Death? Since it’s an artifact that originated from the faction of the Awakened Dead, it would make sense. I also suspect that Loken couldn’t touch the artifact because he descended from an ancient house. Conversely, Michael might be able to touch it because beeing from House Wolf, meaning his faction could benefit from retrieving it. I doubt that this artifact would grant darlsworn Players like Anriq him to lose his status as a darksworn. It wouldn’t make sense for an artifact stored by a dark faction to have that effect. Plus, Anriq has a dark class after all. What I could see happening, though, is Michael leveraging this artifact to gain an advantage for the Forerunners. If he helps Adriel reclaim her body, allowing her to ascend to a Power and claim the chalice, that could be awesome. What do you all think?

Marco Ramon

Tom Elliot (Rohan Vider)

a valid point about the tree escaping. Editing to add: "But… The rift was closing slower than any of us had anticipated. And that meant the void tree had a way out—something that caught me equally off-guard. " and "And it was our failure—I had no doubt about that. We had all known there was a risk of the tree trying to flee at some point, but none of us had considered the possibility of him using the rift to sector 30,199 because the damnable ley line was supposed to close the moment the tree uprooted himself."

Tom Elliot (Rohan Vider)

good point. I added a bit more of a description: Cresting the rise, my eyes darted to my distant foe. The void tree was fully airborne, and the base of his trunk was more than a hundred feet off the ground. A wormlike mass of fleshy white appendages hung below the Power—the roots Anriq had spied. But to me, they looked more like an overlord’s tentacles, and as exposed as they were, the roots gave the tree a strangely naked appearance. Is he more vulnerable this way? I wondered. I would find out soon enough, I suspected. Of more concern right now was how fast my foe was moving. I had no idea how the void tree was propelling himself through the air, but he was almost at the rift. I couldn’t delay any longer. Releasing the weave I held ready, I blinked out of existence.

Tom Elliot (Rohan Vider)

Here’s a little theory that I would love to see. Instead of saya being imprisoned or whatever is happening, I think it would be cool to see saya being put to work as a merchant for a lesser faction of the shadow coalition and Michael had to go to their sector and get her back through the factions armies. Just a little idea I think could work.

Grady Perry

The entirety of the game is to out-game the game lol

obiwann

I’m telling u… once he reclaims sectors pulled into nether sphere… previously dead players are coming back once the safe zone is restored. Scions of old houses included! Heard it here first!

obiwann

Read both dragon mages. I see why people want him to continue it.

obiwann

The only "impossible" thing that seems like a maybe for the combat trial is... after he defeats Dathe in the combat trial he names Anriq the Commander of his Wolf Guard and in the process awakens his bloodline despite him being darksworn... which permits Anriq to wear the wolf torque.

David Brewer

I said dark as it seemed like your issue was the story lacking obvious painful signs of a struggle, not because you "wanted" a gothic or horror story. The fact that they honestly at best fought the tree to a draw didn't seem to be something you cared about. Thus, while I still maintain you have the right to think "The Grand Game" lacks tension and is to "easy", we'll all continue to feel that it doesn't and isn't. Michael faced down a MINOR stygian Power... and still couldn't seal the deal. And worse most of his allies are of limited use in directly combating any tree as they lack the mental defense he possesses so they could easily become liabilities. The harbingers he fought barely count, not because they aren't dangerous but because the void apparently values them about the same as we might value a guard dog. Useful, but replaceable. And of course he had literally nothing to protect himself from the psychic screams... and STILL has nothing. Edit: for the record, as I'm not sure I've ever really thought this out or seen it spelled out. Saplings = elites (200+) Young Tree = minor Powers (300+) Mature Tree = major Powers (400+) Old Tree = Supreme Powers (500+) Ancient Tree = Primes (600+) Void Fathers... what 700+? Has there ever even been a Prime at that level?

David Brewer

Tftc ❤️ congrats on finishing the book.

mark janson

I'm speaking of Dungeon Lord as a masterclass in drama and tension, not for length. If Elliot didn't read those books, he should. As you say these cliffhangers, really more small-ledge-hangers as they are barely an inconvenience are getting annoying and the arbitrary time limits as well. Its also not about the story being dark, it's about it being a !good! story, which requires challenge, struggle and sacrifice and not just a pleasant walk from beginning to end. Michael has had it VERY easy over the course of the books for the level of his enemies and it is starting to make the setting and Game itself seem like a joke. This series is moving into Mark of the Fool territory for how the MC steamrolls everything.

Michael Sareyani

Eh, he's entitled to his opinions. Some people favor darker outcomes as being "realistic" because life is often dark. I do think 12 hour battles are beyond absurd, but that's my opinion and not necessarily relevant or appropriate for the story he was referencing. I agree he's wrong that everything worked (honestly given the tree escaped I'd give them a D for execution) hence why Michael needed Nyra's heal, or why they shifted battle plans, etc. But it's also unlikely you'll convince him that this is an acceptable ending... and I actually agree that the way everyone of these books have ended in cliffhangers (or nearly enough) is getting a bit old. I don't "mind" them per say, but I think it's a bit overused. Edit: I rather expect Michael isn't going to kill the tree as he'll try to immediately warn Kintara and the Brotherhood of their (the Forerunners) error. But the bigger issue is the tree has shown it has a number of rather terrifying "aces" and in the new sector it doesn't need to stay rooted nor does the mature tree so it's more likely (my opinion) Michael and the Brotherhood will be running the hell away not fighting the tree. I mean with all the stolen spells, buffs, and everything it still took him what a half hour, maybe a full hour to reduce the tree by 30%... while it had to remain stationary. And before anyone brings it up, yes he is right to infer nobody "important" died. They were all clearly alive when Michael left. It IS possible that Snow or Duggar, or other significant characters did die. But none of them would count as "key" for the upcoming conflicts.

David Brewer

Don’t know about that, he seems to be struggling quite a bit against the tree. Sure he is winning but he was buffed a lot by the others, and the buffs will run out soon if they haven’t already. And he was healed by Nyra. Also I feel like there has been something happening with the nagas and them affecting portals, not sure if it’s going to come into play in the next book or down the line. Also do keep in mind that they did plan extensively for this, the whole book was practically preparing for this fight while the void didn’t know it had a fight coming.

Tesset

Yes it has, the entire thing has been very unsatisfying. EVERY tactic succeeded, every piece made it to the board, it's almost becoming a joke at this point. Read Dungeon Lord for example, a 12 hour battle scene with stakes, back and forth, ebb and flow, deaths of significant characters. Not only that, ending the book on some cheesy cliffhanger. Let me tell you what will happen, Michael will jump in, kill the tree, save the mercs. I mean, with how this story is going, he'll end up just soloing all of New Powers himself without breaking a sweat.

Michael Sareyani

keep up the good work tom

Captain Megamind

damn a cliffhanger again nevertheless one of the best books i have ever read

Captain Megamind

Should be March

Tesset

Anyone know when the next book’s chapters will start

Grady Perry

Yes it was through mind trials, but there is probably only two other trials, combat and magic one. During which he is probably going to awaken 2 more memories. That’s nowhere near enough to fill his slots for available blood memories. What happens after? And that is just Micheal. What about the other Wolf Scions? What about the scions from the other Houses that he wants to resurrect? They will be useless without blood memories. I doubt anyone will be on Micheal’s level of strength to make up for not having blood memories and I doubt each house has such backups such as the wolf trials. So from a storytelling perspective if you are Tom and you have spend 8 books expanding on the world and magic system, what would you do? How would you solve this for the MC using the tools available? There are a bunch of requirements that need to be filled. 1. It has to be something that every scion can do not just Micheal and his followers 2. It has to require effort from the scions 3. It has to give the characters reason to do the things you want them to do in the story 4. It has to make sense within the magic system Killing stygians fills all of the requirements. I also just want to note. That i do see a possibility where they can also awaken by killing any players.

Tesset

I agree that the feat needs to have that “impossible” kind of feel to it. But we don’t actually know what’s going to happen with “A Perverted Trial”. We don’t know what kind of problems are going to arise around it or how Micheal solves them. When he set out to solve the things with the possessed, there was nothing impossible about it. And when he created the wolfman pack there was nothing impossible about it, it was made apparent how incredible that was in retrospect when were given all the details. So even if it feels like there is nothing “impossible” about a perverted trial right now, i think he is going to do something that is. For example I think he will steal the chalice first, to use as bargaining chip for Saya then he will find out during the perverted trial that he can solve the issue of the warewolves being darksworn with it, thus allowing them to follow the path of Wolf again. That would definitely have that impossible vibe to it. We also don’t know how he is going to deal with Rampel. The moment Micheal kills Dante, and he will, the darksworn supreme power (Rampel) will immediately know and he will immediately head to the warewolf castle. Finding a way to have secured the warewolf pack out from under the noses of the Triumvirate will definitely have that “impossible” feel. Also reclaiming this sector or one that has completely fallen, although incredible and absolutely falling in the category of “impossible”, and he will definitely get something extraordinary as reward for it, it has nothing to do with “wolf things”, the way creating a new wolfman pack did. I think for a 3rd ascendent class it has to be both “impossible” and “wolf related”.

Tesset

That’s why I’m confused… Is he going to write both simultaneously?

Alejandro

Has it though? It set up Michael taking a ride on a void tree into a rift. Does that rift still lead to the side the brotherhood are on? Another epic battle without the prior set up? Or will the tree take him somewhere else? Do void rifts work the same as kingdom rifts? The void tree made the rift, forced the connection to that sector and it's roots anchored the rift. That means it has more control over rifts than kingdom rift mages. So Michael could be bound for the nethersphere. ... or who knows where? The possibilities are boundless and ominous...

TwistedVanity

Awesome

TwistedVanity

Thanks for the "longest" book. This series is awesome and I will definitely get the audible of this book when it's released. I just re-read the Gods Game and wish books 2-6 were on audible. Anxious for more on that and on all your series. I like the idea of the wolf packs living on the fifth floor. I also wonder if attacks on Nexus will decrease because of the new Guardian. If so, it would be amusing if the powers couldn't figure out why. I still hope his enemies or his initial allies from book 1 will be astonished at how much or how quickly he has grown since they last met. How much time in the book has passed since day 1?

Harley Dalton Jr.

Interesting ending. But the fight with the three harbingers was much too anti-climactic. Everything unfortunately always goes by without a hitch in the plans and while it makes for fun power fantasy, there just isn't any drama to it.

Michael Sareyani

Yeah he is a bit rash. And yes, Loken cares (or says he cares) nothing for the chalice and merely doesn't want the Awakened Dead to have it. It IS possible that just securing the sector would be enough to get the envoy to back off, but we don't actually know if its her plan or one of Loken’s. If it's the later, I doubt very much Michael will get Saya back without Loken trying to ferret out more of his secrets. But, as far as we know, Loken does believe he knows all of them at present. I rather doubt the wolf sector and the dungeon will have anything to do with Adriel. Last Michael talked about it his plan was to con Talon into clearing the Awakened Dead from the dungeon in the dire wolf's old valley. But, Adriel's body is presently hidden (hopefully anyway) somewhere in the Awakened Dead's main base... Erebus' headquarters. Michael and the gang are so not ready to force their way into a closed sector with at least 2 significant Powers involved. Thus, Adriel's body will remain where it is for awhile... unless they find some sneaky way around the shield. And whether he has time wait before rescuing Saya, I think we can agree he isn't likely to wait. If he doesn't end up trapped in sector 30199, which is unlikely, he's going to start "planning" how to rescue her ASAP.

David Brewer

> “Fleeing?” Teresa asked skeptically. “Why would you think that? Maybe it’s on its way to help the harbingers.” === The whole thing is italicized when only the speaking part needs it.

Re: Using the Chalice as leverage for Saya's release. My memory is that Loken doesn't want the Chalice in his possession, didn't he tell Micheal to toss it in the ocean for all he cared? He just didn't want Paya to have it, didn't want the Awakened Dead to figure out how to use it. If that's right, I don't know that he can do any kind of trade for her. I am still of the mind that Loken's anvoy kidnapped her because Michael evacuated the wolves. She thought that was her leverage to get the 'wolf boy' to do her bidding. Once they were gone, she moved to the only other person there with ties to Micheal: Saya. Getting her release may be as simple as securing peace in the wolf valley. Keep the promise he made with the envoy, let the light, dark, and shadow have their access to the dungeon and there's no more reason for Saya to be held. But, that likely can't be done within the timeline Michael gave himself. Kind of rash, our Micheal.

Kyle Garfield

> The trio spun around at the sound, giving me the previous few seconds I needed to complete my spell. === Typo: giving me the precious few

TimeDrawsNigh

My guess is the securing peace in the valley and restoring Adriel to her body go hand in hand. Because i expect that securing the wolf valley will include dealing with the Awakened Dead in the awesome dungeon there, where they were most recently holed up. I think the long awaited confrontation with Stayne with Adriel in tow will be awesome. He still has a lot of time for that relative to the self-imposed adjudicator-supported deadline to rescue Saya. Which aims him toward a confrontation with Loken. The Sneaking in and out with her is the best bet for avoiding that, but doesn't align well with the Just Retribution tenant. While the two timelines aren't the same, the three goals are all in the same sector (yes, Adriels body isn't there, but maybe he gets to go there under a pretense of parlay) I'm still curious about what Powers Erebus was trying to obtain in addition to his candidate snatching from the first book.

Kyle Garfield

Great way to end the book and keep us eager for the next book. Looking forward to future chapters.

MARK FRINK

That's possible but I rather doubt that would do it. That's the sort of thing he'd be expected to do as Wolf. It's not really as impressive to prevent the Triumverate from abusing the combat trial as creating a pack of non-player werewolves. One is essentially impossible, and the other is arguably in his own self interest. I won't argue that the text definitely suggested Wolf was outraged at the perverted trial... but that's not necessarily going to obtain him an extra Ascendant class. I mean Atiras created the Wolf trials, but we have no reason to think he had additional Ascendant classes. True, just because Ceruvax hadn't heard of Den Forefather or Sire Wolf doesn't mean Atiras didn't have an extra one but given the genuine surprise Ceruvax and Adriel both expressed upon his gaining the second class I'd expect it's extremely uncommon. "Sire wolf and den forefather?” Ceruvax muttered. “I know of no Wolf Prime who has ever been offered those Classes.” For reference, as I said not proof of anything but highly suggestive there haven't been many (if any) Wolf Progenitors in history, and similarly any other way to earn an extra mark Ascendant class combo would be insanely rare. Not saying your theory is wrong, as we can see elsewhere in these comments I like the wild theories. But it just doesn't feel "impossible" enough to me compared to making a new breed of werewolves. Whereas restoring a sector lost in the nethersphere to the Endless Kingdom? Yeah that feels pretty freaking impossible, even the one they just saved was pretty impressive if maybe not "impossible".

David Brewer

Lol

David Brewer

But it does require that there be scions associated with the bloodline to refine his bloodline and there aren't that many. Even if he completes all of Atiras' trials Michael will probably be lucky to get more than 1 "godlike" level of memory much less anything beyond that and he has a lot of "open" spots in the far future of him ascending to Prime. bloodline. For the record, it would be 3 lesser, 3 greater, 4 "godlike", 3 ancient, and 1 ultimate. Not getting the ultimate wouldn't be a huge failure as the Powers can't get any equivalent. But it's still power he could have, but doesn't because he can't maximize his blood.

David Brewer

That is definitely more likely (them having some knowledge of the Primes) than my theory of them suspecting the truth about Michael... which is sorta like saying a rainy day will be wetter than a sunny one heh.

David Brewer

The adjudicator is biased. As long as he/she continues to drop good loot on MC, we can assume the adjudicator finds mc worthy of being favored.

obiwann

His first blood memory was through mind trials… he didn’t kill anyone…

obiwann

I’m also hoping of brotherhood having knowledge of the ancients. Could allow them to have an artifact that houses fallen scions, that can allow him access to blood memories.

obiwann

I think normally it does. You have to get the mark before having the bloodline matters (you can have the mark but not the awakened bloodline, aka Anriq). And I wasn't really trying to argue, heh I lack sufficient details to actually build an argument because my theory is pretty wild. I'm mostly speculating and I appreciate the counterpoints you made because while I can't claim I "disproved" them, as I totally didn't (if anything you made it more obvious how out there my theory is)... it did help me refine my crackpot idea. Honestly, it's hard as hell to speculate about something like this when I have knowledge that I definitely know she doesn't have... and even worse I have no idea how much or little she does know.

David Brewer

Rescuing Saya is going to put a hitch in keeping Loken in the dark. He must meet the envoy, and even if meets her by sneaking rather than openly it's almost a certainty that Loken is "monitoring" the situation hence his disinterest in meeting Michael. He's probably using his envoy as a measuring stick to test just where Michael sits on the player vs Power scale. But yeah Michael is going to be busy.

David Brewer

Excellent read. Now we just need to wait until March for the next update. The void has been driven from the sector and the future of the forerunners is essentially secure. Michael is on the verge of becoming a true power, perhaps even if he kills the tree, though I think he will fall just shy of 300. I am very interested in how the remaining tasks get wrapped up: -steal the chalice -peace in the wolves valley -rescue Saya -stop the perversion of the combat trial -4 rift dives with the brotherhood -find Adriel’s body and help her re-inhabit it. Most of these cant really be delegated, while I think he can perhaps use the chalice as leverage to secure Sayas release, I doubt that anyone other than him can successfully complete the others, and in the case of the brotherhood it can be no one but him. The easiest one to complete would probably be the combat trial but I believe that doing so would tip Micheal’s hand that he is farther along than expected. Loken no doubt has people watching locations or objects important to Wolf to try and track Micheal’s progress. The more time that passes with the new powers unaware of just how far he has come, the better.

Johnsmith

🤷🏻‍♂️k. Mark/class type; it’s immaterial. I don’t really care enough to continue to argue that there’s absolutely nothing to suggest that they suspect that or that they should have any reason to. And as to the power matter, I’m sure it is since he went to the meeting with a nether stone. Also, only wolves doesn’t exactly preclude those with a bloodline and not the mark.

Joshua Adams

I am leaning more towards him doing something extraordinary that has to do with wolf things. That’s how he got Sire Wolf, so for a while I thought he might get it by completing “A Perverted Trial”. For a bunch of reasons i think that’s one he has to tackle soon, even though for now it doesn’t seem necessary. The main reason why I think he will unlock the third class through that is because the language used to describe the emotional state of the entity "Wolf". It's always described as being "pleased" or displeased" by Micheals actions or by events. We have never heard anything else, but when "A Perverted Trail" task was given, it was said that "Wolf is incensed". "Incensed" is a strong word. So I think the rewards will be heavy in the form of Wolf Marks/Wolf traits. Micheal will probably get another Mark on the level of "Wolf Progenitor" or close to it.

Tesset

Actually hiding the Wolf mark isn't necessary. If you'll recall only those with a Wolf mark or actual wolves can see it (the danger of awakening your blood is the fact that it subsumes your force marks). Her being upset with him is a given. However, she agreed to work with him despite deceiving her even though her initial intent was to only allow him a chance to admit the truth. But as I readily concede, it's my hunch. I'm more than willing to admit it may be a long shot theory, but I think it fits. But, it's not like I have any real proof and thus I can't really dispute your counterpoints. I will note... I don't think Kintara technically views anyone except the void as her enemy. So given the arrangement he made with her... it seems odd for her (to me) to really care. She benefits from getting a netherstone and a chance to study a sector lost to the nethersphere. And as he isn't fighting alongside her people (or rather that wasn't the plan) he can't betray her to the void fathers. But that is just another conjecture. We'll just have to wait and see if I'm right. Your theory of suspecting he's a Power is almost certainly correct though. "You have acquired the Mark Wolf-friend. You have proven yourself an ally to wolfkind, making them less inclined to attack you in the future. Only wolves will see this Mark on you."

David Brewer

Honestly, I still think it's a huge stretch. Loken's observations were exactly that; observations because he was unable to hide his marks, or rather his false marks were frozen at the time and he had less control over them, not that there's any assurances that he'd be able to obfuscate them from Loken without bloodline abilities. She, on the other hand, had only met him after he had already attained the deception skill and could not make the same observations. Her willingness to upset someone who's refused to be straightforward with her AND who wants something from her is again not enough to suggest that she believes he's a scion. Having knowledge of the existence of Ancients and scions in the past is not a correlation to him being one. Her interest in knowing who she's dealing with is likely commonplace in a game that's basically eternally warring kingdoms. You wouldn't want to work with someone you've blacklisted or are at war with. She agreed to work with him, however, because the terms were favorable, and she deemed it worth the risk. Again, not an indicator of being a scion though. And wondering what he's hiding is again not an indicator. If anything, their knowledge of what the powers would do if they knew of a scion and that - generally you can't hide a mark like wolf at early levels since secret blood is exclusive to wolf - suggest they'd have no reason to believe that he'd have been able to make it alive to a level where he'd actually be able to hide his marks with a rare deception skill.

Joshua Adams

Fair. Cliffhangers aren't as obvious when you can just start the next book.

David Brewer

Nothing. But, I suspect the Adjudicator might take exception to trying to intentionally game the rules. So... while I say nothing... I'm uncertain that you won't get punishment.

David Brewer

No. The mark of pack-alpha, while required to be eligible to be a Young Blood... isn't in itself enough. If you read the notification Michael got (Safyre too) it specifically notes "have an evolved class". Ceruvax mentioned that he was thought of a lesser in the ancient House Wolf because he can't ascend. I don't recall precisely how he stated it, but he made it clear his class never evolved... thus he's ineligible for gaining an Ascendant class.

David Brewer

I will cry by the time new chapters start coming

Michael Rabbitt

I mean... I dunno. But having multiple Ascendant classes isn't really meant to be possible much less easy. So while claiming a hidden sector that he protected from being dragged into the nethersphere might give him a trait to unlock the final Ascendant class... it's also possible that he might need to say claim a sector for his faction that was already LOST to the nethersphere... like say sector 30199.

David Brewer

Oh this is my first time reading live I just started finished the last book and started in patreon and I don't I noticed the cliffhangers before

Sailesh Kumar Kumar

Yeah, book 1 ended with Michael escaping Erebus' dungeon. And that was all we knew, it's tradition at this point.

David Brewer

Honestly, I'm not sure how to explain myself better. It's mostly a hunch I suppose. It just feels right to me. The Brotherhood fairly transparently possesses some knowledge of the era before the rise of the new Powers... even if that knowledge may be mostly limited to the stygians. So it makes sense to me they may have some obscure knowledge akin to how Loken knew that Michael stopped advancing his force marks because of his interest in Wolf. And as such his actions, interest, and even the likelihood he's a Power (or nearly so) all hint at the truth. But as I said, a hunch. But it does explain Kintara's clear interest in her diviner's opinion... which otherwise doesn't make a lot of sense. Curious about him? Sure. But willing to upset a maybe-Power that might actually further her crusade. Unlikely. Particularly as given the time he could have demanded his netherstone back and they clearly want it. Edit: I'll note if she had acted super curious on their first meeting before she agreed to work with him, rather than outraged at him for his refusal to be honest I think I'd be less confident of my theory. But her obvious curiosity AFTER agreeing to work with him knowing he was a deception player... That combined with... “There is more to fear in the world than stygians,” I replied softly. Surprise, suspicion, and a hint of calculation crossed the huntmistress’ face. “You are being hunted.” I nodded mutely. “By whom? Menaq?” I chuckled, but it was a sound devoid of mirth. “Menaq is the least of my worries. Those that hunt me are not ones you want to tangle with—ever.” She stared at me searchingly. “And is that all you’re willing to say on the subject?” Makes me fairly certain. As Michael all but admitted to being hunted by things more dangerous than just the nether OR even an assassin Power like Menaq... which I guess is why I harp on them having some knowledge of the Primes. If they do, they'd have reason to wonder if that's what Michael is truly hiding.

David Brewer

Time to pick up dragon mage. Haven’t read any yet. Was saving for when this ended since he announced book 3 in the works

obiwann

So… if you can’t attack… what’s to stop him from walking into where he “shouldn’t” prompting people to attack him so he CAN attack back??

obiwann

But reclaiming a sector… with his faction… for the pack. And for some reason I’m surprised there were no other messages he had to attend to after replacing Kolath. I’m thinking he good… and claiming a sector under threat of the void to secure his pack?? If that doesn’t earn governor… what does?!!

obiwann

All his books end like this.

obiwann

It’s a nice theory, but the fact that they emphasize his marks appear genuine has no direct correlation with being a scion. It’s indicative of being a deception player, and they wanted to use their highest perception player to glean as much information about him as possible since he was unwilling to do so himself. I just think it’s a stretch to say scion specifically since there’s nothing about that that is exclusive to being a scion. Now, having knowledge of nether powers on the other hand implies he may have seen or fought them before, so it’s less of a stretch.

Joshua Adams

The mental image of a void tree that has uprooted itself and is flying away reminds me of the overloards. They have the tentacles that sometimes anchor them to the ground. Anyway, if the overloards hadn't had their stuff given to them, they would have looked like a matching set as they flew away.

Kyle Garfield

I wondered about when Ceruvax obtained the title of alpha, "Without it, a scion will never amount to anything more than a House follower, but with it… With it, he may become one of the House’s elite and perhaps one day even aspire to Prime." Does Ceruvax obtaining this title increase the cap of his level? So now he can progress and become something more than he is? While the Adjudicator could have not shown this same message to Ceruvax because of his lineage. It sure would be a bummer if that's the case.

Kyle Garfield

Yeah they’ll definitely suffer penalties or at the very least loose the extra abilities if they leave the house. The way they lose them when they become foresworn.

Tesset

Thank you! Enjoyed every moment of it! And lately very few typos for me to Puntificate on. I must find other venues for puns!

Michael Kantor

I do agree, honestly even Michael would significantly benefit from being able to actually obtain all of his blood memories. Thus, a task... or series of tasks that lead to a valid alternative method to obtain them would be a decent storytelling strategy. As for forcesworn, if it is going to benefit them I'd expect it would require some kind of limitation. Otherwise they could join the Forerunners, obtain the "enhanced" forcesworn powers and then leave given that the Adjudicator doesn't punish you for leaving a faction. Something like, must bear the mark of Safyre (for lightsworn at least) would be appropriate perhaps.

David Brewer

They are on the other side of the rift, preventing reinforcements. They are inside the sector that is already fully claimed by the void.

J Snyder

He is going to continue the Grand Game. But if you check on Amazon you might notice that Dragon Mage has a publication date of July 1, whereas the next book of Grand Game is October. Either way we'll just have to wait and see.

David Brewer

Hold on… Ir the next book is coming in October 2025, does that mean that you are going to continue with the Grand Game instead of an other project?

Alejandro

They were contracted to fight on the other side of the rift to prevent the tree from calling those stygians to help.

David Brewer

Cliffhanger!! I knew it. Good book.

Alejandro

Pretty sure they suspect he's a scion to be honest. “His spirit signatures appear genuine,” Fiona continued, “his mind is impenetrable, and his magic seems non-existent.” Emphasis on appear genuine. That's the obvious reason why Fiona is so frustrated with him and why Kartara is willing to annoy Michael by having her repeatedly and overtly trying to inspect him. We've seen some evidence to suggest the Brotherhood possesses knowledge of the stygians from sources they aren't willing to reveal... suggesting it might be remnant knowledge from before the rebellion. I mean, given how the Powers ignore the void it stands to reason the Brotherhood may well have been founded by scions "forced" like the werewolves of Nexus to assume force marks. Finally, as the Powers ignore the void... the fact that Michael not only doesn't but is willing to directly tangle with stygian Powers is strong evidence he must be a Power... and hints at significant differences from the new Powers.

David Brewer

If the brotherhood didn’t suspect him a power before, they soon will.

Joshua Adams

Yes i like that. Although your numbers are random i def see that it could potentially be something like that. I am not completely sure how it’s going to impact the forcesword but I have a feeling they will benefit them somehow. It has to. And getting more abilities per tier by being part of the house is the main thing that comes to mind. From a storytelling perspective it makes complete sense to introduce a method of awakening blood memories for the scions because they will be borderline useless without them. Micheal might be able to make up for it with a tone of other feats and stuff but I don’t think there will be many others like him. And the house makes the most sense, some Prime artefact being the second option.

Tesset

I rather expect nobody truly understands how "cowardly" the trees are. They don't seem to value anything over themselves. Thus, I expect Michael and co assumed the tree would want to try and advance the void's goals rather than running away. Which might even have been true if the other 3 harbingers hadn't arrived and then gotten slaughtered. I mean how often has anyone seen a tree run away? Michael saw the sapling flee... but it wasn't even a Power yet.

David Brewer

Oh come on why are leaving in such a cliffhanger

Sailesh Kumar Kumar

TFTC

Sailesh Kumar Kumar

Heh, perhaps but remember he did want to rescue Saya from Loken’s envoy and having the ability to strike first might help. But he might also be able to bait her as she almost certainly won't realize he's a Power with a legendary Ascendant class when he goes to find Saya. Ultimately, I wasn't saying he won't advance his class as soon as possible... merely that he might want to wait.

David Brewer

Wait. The brotherhood is fighting naga in another sector? I thought for some reason that they were covering one of the four sides. (Nsew)

Jay

Oh well, that idea has merit to be honest. Say perhaps I slay 3000 stygians that are <200. Maybe that "unlocks" my first lesser blood memory. Then, I slay 30,000 stygians <200... etc. That is the sort of struggle the Adjudicator might accept. Obviously my numbers come entirely from random statements. But unless the system "forces" or even allows forcesworn to "earn" their elite abilities I wouldn't expect it to impact them. Something like this might earn be related to the "unexpected" consequences of inviting Powers not of Wolf to his faction. He did get a task telling him to add to non-Wolf Powers after all.

David Brewer

Yeah, 15/20 chapters ago I post my theory about unlocking “governor” before legendary. I am quite certain it will happen. Something along the lines of “ambassador” type of governor where he can establish revive pools in any sector he wants. And he and his faction can use them.

Tesset

But it does grant power, it’s just that the one you struggle for is more potent. Then again you could say that creating such a house in the first place was the struggle. But i get it. When I say automatic, I mean more in terms of that each player will have to kill a lot of stygians for example. But I am 100% certain the new house will somehow allow house scions to get blood memories.

Tesset

You aren't wrong there are two methods for becoming a Power... levels being the "easy" method. The other method is to slay other Powers. But for scions it also requires a specific house mark. Thus, you need to gain (for Michael's situation) the powerful Acolyte mark AND the pack patriarch (the next mark for Wolf progression) mark. Based on the notification Michael got after earning powerful Acolyte, it seems possible that forcesworn Powers can't advance to the next rank "early". I.e. even if Safyre gains powerful Acolyte she may not be able to obtain her legendary Ascendant class until she actually reaches 300. Given the wording it does actually suggest that Michael doesn't actually "need" to advance his Wolf mark to evolve his class, just that he could do so if he does. Finally, as for obtaining the governor path... I doubt that would be easy to accomplish. Consider, for his Sire Wolf class he had to turn non-players into werewolves... but normally they would all die.... because they lack sufficient Wolf blood to become werewolves. Thus, Michael accomplishing the task was something of a cheat. He turned former scions now non-players into werewolves... how often do you expect that players lose that status without dying?

David Brewer

It is possible that some method to advance the bloodlines other than killing fellow scions will be introduced, but the game doesn't "grant" power. As such, it's quite likely that it will still place onerous burdens on the scions in question. That, in my opinion, is the true reason why forcesworn powers are weaker than blood memories... they are granted and not "earned".

David Brewer

New house has Force powers > Automatic blood memories awakenings for scions. New house has House Powers > more Force abilities for each Force Power.

Tesset

He already said focusing on publication of 8 and deciding how he wants the story to progress. Let the man replenish his creativity pool! Lol

obiwann

Going forward I hope we get more interactions between Ceruvax and the wolfs. A little disappointed that we couldn't see him meet Sulan and Anriq and the others for the first time. I hope when Micheal returns we get a "House Wolf" meeting with all of them. And it would be nice if Ceruvax can teach them the ins and outs of Wolf. I am all for the One House thing, and I like that Micheal has allies outside of Wolf. But at the same time, down the line I want to see a bit of distinction inside the new house/faction where Micheal fights shoulder by shoulder with his own followers exclusively and non-player-wolfs. And I want to see how he molds them in his own image and how they can support him. Essentially I want to see the reason why he picked the commander class. (yes, i know warebite made a massive difference in the story as a whole. i am talking more about direct fight.) I am also hoping we make some progress on the legendary equipment front. I don't know how many books its been since we got wayfinder stuff. Or maybe complete the 3-in-1 set? Or maybe some others as well? Also can we get a break down of the equipment? Some chart similar to the ones for the ascendant classes? I am not quite clear on how equipment ranks correspond to player ranks and similar for abilities. Is a Legendary abilities such as the ones Micheal got from elder form, correspond to tier 7 abilities or tier 8 or are tiers 7 and 8 legendary? Same for equipment, are legendary sets essentially for players level 300-400? After that is mythical? If so, then would the wayfinder set become underleved soon when Micheal pushes for level 400?

Tesset

One thing I don’t understand is how with all the preparation it wasn’t discussed what to do if the tree fled. He had seen this before… why would he think anything else was going to happen once the battle was overwhelming in his favor.

obiwann

When does he attack first? Rarely. I think his need for gathering power going to push him to evolve cuz he gonna be fighting two trees instead of 1

obiwann

This is weird…not following

obiwann

Well shut, that is a ending leaving me wanting...lol. ty for the story.

Daniel Alexander Womack

Ceruvax can't ever reach level 300 sadly. He doesn't possess an evolved Class. Safyre likely can deepen her mark by slaying either or both... but we can be fairly confident she probably can't use the powerful Acolyte mark until she reaches 300. Based on the way the Adjudicator stated the requirements to obtain a legendary Ascendant class, it's fairly likely she can't. Since (so far as we know) she can't advance her mark beyond Supreme Light and so can't evolve again until level 300. That doesn't mean getting the mark isn't important, but it does limit the immediate value. Now, I will concede it's possible the Supreme Light mark does allow her to evolve her class again. We don't have enough direct knowledge of the mark progress for the forcesworn to be certain. As far as Michael's Wolf mark... that's my theory yes. Once they claim the sector that will advance his mark and let him evolve his class again... but he might choose not to. Being prohibited from attacking other players prior to reaching 300 might be something he decides to avoid or at least limit.

David Brewer

Sooo…. Hear me out… establishing new breed of wolves gave him an ascendant class after he had one…. He has deepened his power mark but can’t evolve until his wolf mark deepens or he reaches level 300. He established a faction… and once they claim the sector to protect the pack it should deepen… while ALSO potentially giving him the governor class… if he gets that before he chooses to evolve… brooooooo. (Unless I missed something of the game logic). Also… since I’m talking about it…. I have to go back and look but I thought he had exactly two ways of becoming a power. Killing powers… or deepening his wolf mark. This was for prime. OR he could just use the lvls and be a power that way… albeit weaker than normal powers because he is not force aligned…. which would make him a weaker power overall. I dunno I’m missing something per usual. Oh well guess I have to re read!!!

obiwann

Beautiful o7

CipherFTW

The New House theory Fifteen/twenty chapters ago I though that Micheal would awaken some trait or acquire some blood memory down the line that would allow him to gather/stir his bloodline without the need for dead scions. And thus be able to awaken blood memories. But I was re-reading the previous books and I changed my mind. Because this would only solve the problem for Micheal and maybe his followers. It will not solve the issue for the other houses that will eventually emerge in the Forunners, like Death, Lion etc. Instead I think this issue will be solved by the New House he is creating. I feel like the "Cosmic Forces" (Dark, Light and Shadow) and the Houses can have some sort of interconnecting effect. This is how I think it its going to work. It's not going to blend all the forces and house bloods into one. Micheal's theme is wolf, so that won't change. I also don't think Micheal and house scions will get force abilities, because I think the two are completely different. And also because we have been told time and again how much more powerful blood memories are than force abilities. It will feel like a downgrade for Micheal to get force abilities. So instead I think Bloods from the Houses that are part of the new House will be able to automatically gather blood energy and awaken blood memories. They will do it either by killing any other players, or creatures or stygians or all of that. (if its stygians it might give them extra incentive to hunt them). Or they might just straight up automatically awaken blood memories like forcesworn. But this will only be possible if the House also has living Force Powers in it. On the other hand I think Force Powers will also benefit. I think they will be able to attain as many force abilities as their House Blood equivalent. For example a Major Power will have as many as an Old Blood. Essentially the diagram we got in book 6 for the First Ascendant Path will be mirrored for both sides. And I think a "Force Prime" will emerge in this new house with an Ultimate Force Ability etc. (though I am not sure about this last bit) Even though Force Powers from this new house will have bridged the gap significantly with House Powers. Blood Memories are still stronger when matched one to one, so the Primes from the House's will still be stronger 1v1. Now there will be caveats and limitations to this. For example the number of force abilities a Power can retain will be dictated by the highest tier of living House Blood in the house. E.g if the highest House Blood in the House is Young Blood, only a Minor Power will be able to take advantage of it and be able to retain a Godlike Force ability. A Major power wouldn't be affected. The house will need an Old Blood for a Major Power to benefit. Otherwise they will only have their "base" number of force abilities. While the House Bloods will need at least 2, maybe even all 3 types of Force Powers in the House to take advantage of automatically awakening their blood memories. Or maybe they will also be constrained by the highest tier of Force Power. E.g an Old Blood can only awaken blood Memories if there is Major Force Power in the House. Or maybe both. But I am leaning towards them being constrained by the number different types of force powers. This way the Powers inside the House will want to maintain a balance and diversity of Powers/Bloods. I would also expect that any forsworn that join will be forgiven but upon leaving they will receive harsh penalties. Normal players/powers will also receive some penalties for leaving. Externally I think this will have an interesting effect. The Forunners will be deemed an extreme treat and many powers including the Triumvarate will come after them as hard as they can. On the other hand, many will be tempted to join, incentivized by the prospect of increasing their own strength.

Tftc! And thank you for the book Tom! It was awesome! I liked all the moving pieces. I look forward to happens next in the series. I'll post some theories and speculations about different stuff in a few different comments here. Curious to see what everyone thinks.

The door "lock" was a tier 5 effect. When Michael and the Brotherhood were discussing it it was noted that it wouldn't prevent the Harbinger from crossing if it wished. The point of that shield was to prevent all the lesser stygians from overrunning the Forerunners. And as far as the "option" to pass through the rift... that could easily be desperation. He couldn't stop Michael from killing him... AND all of his accompanying Powers were dead or soon would be. "As long as there were enough mages alive to keep the spell going, the dome would prevent the lesser stygians and the nagas from crossing the rift—in either direction. The one downside was that Cait’s spell was only tier five." From "The first prong".

No, the 9th book’s chapters for patreon start in March. October is for the publication of the finished 9th book.

Great ending. Great book. Lots of questions to ponder. Is Michael going to be trapped in a hostile sector again? I'd like to see him reunite with his friends, but the story is always more streamlined and suspenseful when he is on his own.

Can we negotiate? February 2025 sounds good!

Samuel Strode

Nothing. Like I said, I’m already at it. But it’s just not the first time anymore.

We know (mc suspects) the mature tree sent the “favored”. Why add that to the story unless there is an underlying reason? Only thing coming immediately to mind is that the mature tree changed things on the other side. We know they SHOULD be there because the dome was up…. But the tree said the door was locked… yet flying towards it. Why? What made tree think it was an option?

What’s stopping u? I’m going to buy & read lmao

To be fair, there is a decent chance the Brotherhood hasn't left yet. Hence why he went with the tree. We don't have a second by second track of the fight but I rather doubt the fight overall went over an hour. And the original expectation was to fight no longer than 4. And given that the Brotherhood has no Powers the final Harbinger will be a significant problem... hardly insurmountable but something they are much less equipped to deal with. Michael has multiple players (and the liches) >250 and has the advantage of blood memories and his Ascendant class advantages. As I recall Kintara was the only mentioned player over 250, and they are all forcesworn as far as we know. Besides, it's far to convenient a situation to let Michael awe the brotherhood by letting them see a pair of giant wolves wrestling a stygian Power to his death in a nether infested sector. Given how she argued that attacking a sector with an established tree is "lost"... it would appropriate to let her watch him slay the tree and report the success of reclaiming the sector... after all there remains only at most 3 stygian Powers in the sector... the fleeing tree, the established one, and the embattled final Harbinger.

Checked my emails several times today to get the latest chapter. Sad that this is the final one. It will be interesting to see who the other two kills made. Ceruvax? To unblock him from his level cap? I forgot if that was blocked too. The other Saphyre to deepen her mark? Adriel and Farren would be a waste because they are no players right now and cannot gain a power mark in the current state. Will Micheal Wolf mark not deepen when the sector gets claimed? Upholding his side of the agreement? Typo: The trio spun around at the sound, giving me the previous few seconds I needed to complete my spell. Should be: precious

Imagine reading all the chapters up to this point for the first time next week in one go when the new book is released. That must be incredible. Though honestly, I’m already looking forward to rereading them myself. I’ve already started and am currently in Book 4, so it shouldn’t take me too long before I read these chapters all in one go again. I’m already excited about it!

Marco Ramon

Oh ok

Mohammed Sheekh

He already said march will restart chapters.

I was wondering how this would end.. perfect IMO. Several things here… if huntmistress has already left… she has netherstone… effectively trapping Michael. Now this in itself is troubling… but once the forerunners claims the sector Safyre can summon him as a ‘defender’. Dunno if Tom is going there… could allow for MC to be a lone wolf again learning about the mature true and the creche In the process. Very satisfying ending!!

obiwann

Usually no. The listed date should be for the book's publication, thus we can expect chapters before October sometime.

David Brewer

well most likely start getting new chapters in march or april

Orion_777

the book releases in october

Orion_777

Or will you start posting from October in patreon

Arjun Rajesh

Does the book release in October

Good ending—I left with a bit of the feeling one has at an orchestra concert when people actually wait for the director to lower his hands. There was, though, a feeling of something missing between the fight and the jump—maybe a bit more description of the tree to show more of what’s happening to it (like the blaring of dissonant horns growing louder right up to sound cutting off completely at the end of a piece).

Andrew Hollingsworth

To be fair, October is his planned publication date. I believe based on the pre-order for Dragon mage 3 on Amazon he might be switching to that shortly... but we will see chapters for the next book long before October regardless.

David Brewer

Excuse my dumb self but does that mean us patreon people have to wait until October 1st?

Mohammed Sheekh

Yeah.

David Brewer

October?! -wails- NOOOO!!!🥹🥲

Eriach

October! Noooo
