Grand Game 556: Reunions

Day 4 of Michael’s Deadline

You have slept 8 hours. Your stamina, mana, and psi reserves have been fully restored, and your blood memories have recharged.

You have lost knowledge of the stolen spells: mana strike, disrupting ray, and fireball.

Ghost’s magma maw has reached rank 13, her ash armor rank 15, her death magic rank 11, and her nether manipulation rank 9.

You and Ghost have reached level 260!

I awoke, rested and refreshed, and to a surprising set of Game alerts. Ghost had obviously been fighting, and while I found the news initially alarming, I calmed quickly when I spotted no accompanying death message.

The pyre wolf was fine.

More than that, she was accompanied by the nagians. Elise and Lucius would not let any harm befall her. Sitting up and rubbing the sleep away from my eyes, I considered the rest of the Game alerts.

However, she’d done it, Ghost had earned us another level and, more importantly, a Class point each. Sadly, though, neither of my Class abilities were ready for upgrade. Advancing them would have to wait.

Swinging my legs off the bed, I rose to my feet. It was time to get the day started.

✵ ✵ ✵

The soft murmur of conversation greeted me as I made my way down to the former tavern’s common room. I picked out Safyre’s voice immediately, and then three more familiar voices. I sighed in relief. The dungeoneering trio had made it back safely from Korg.

A smile on my face, I entered the common room.

Six faces turned my way—Safyre, Terence, Teresa, Nyra and the two forsworn on duty.

“Morning!” Terence called out exuberantly.

“Morning,” I replied just as cheerfully. Nodding in greeting at the forsworn duo, I seated myself at the table with the other four.

“Where’s Sedgwick?” I asked Safyre after we’d exchanged pleasantries.

“Sedgwick?” Nyra asked, a curious look on her face.

“Our new merchant,” Safyre replied offhandedly. Receiving only blank stares from the trio, she smiled. “I’ll explain later, but there have been more than a few changes since you three left.”

“We can see that,” Teresa said, her eyes drifting in the direction of the two silent forsworn at the far end of the room.

“But as to Sedge,” Safyre went on, refocusing on me, “he’s returned to sector 18,240 to poke around the tunnels.”

I nodded in understanding before turning back to address the returning trio. “How was Korg?”

“Interesting,” Nyra replied laconically.

“Quite,” Terence echoed.

Teresa rolled her eyes. “These two… I don’t know what’s gotten into them, but they’ve been like this the past two days.” She turned to face me. “We had a few hiccups,” the young Lion admitted. “But nothing that we weren’t able to deal with, and in the end, we achieved what we went in for.”

“So… mission accomplished?” Safyre asked.

“Absolutely,” Nyra confirmed with a sharp nod.

“Most definitely,” Terence agreed.

Concealing a smile, I ran my gaze over the three, rechecking their analyze data.

The target is Nyra, a level 103 virulent witch.

The target is Terence, a level 117 arcane knight.

The target is Teresa, a level 119 priestess of the Blade.

The Game’s feedback confirmed the trio’s responses.

“A virulent witch. An arcane knight. And a priestess of the blade,” I pronounced aloud for Safyre’s benefit. “Congratulations, those sound like excellent melded Classes.”

Safyre whistled softly. “They’re bi-blends?”

Teresa nodded smugly. “We each still have one more Class to get.” She rubbed her hands together gleefully. “I, for one, cannot wait.” While the other two didn’t say anything, I could see the same hungry desire in their gazes.

They’ve grown, I thought. And in more ways than one.

Sitting back, I examined three anew. Besides their second Classes, Nyra, Terence, and Teresa had each gained more than thirty levels from their time in the dungeon. That was not the entirety of the changes the trio had undergone, though.

Each carried themselves differently, more… confidently. Their gazes were steady and their movements sure. Gone was Nyra’s tentativeness. Gone was the twins’ self-doubt. Often masked by their brashness, it had always lurked beneath the surface.

There was none of that in evidence now.

And even though I’d only just reacquainted myself with the trio, I was sure their new self-assurance was not a passing fad. They’d changed—permanently—and for the better. Now, Nyra, Terrence, and Tersa were players.

In every sense of the word.

I smiled broadly and in genuine pleasure. “Tell us about your new Classes.”

That drew a flurry of responses—even from the thus far mostly-monosyllabic Terence and Nyra.

I held up my hand, laughing. “Wow, slow down. Start at the beginning and leave nothing out. And while you’re at it, give us a rundown of your journey through the dungeon too.”

The three exchanged glances, then Teresa inclined her head solemnly in Nyra’s direction. “You should start,” she told my apprentice.

Nodding, the former assassin inhaled deeply. “I suppose I should begin with our shopping trip.” Her eyes found mine. “After you left us in Korg Major, we…”

✵ ✵ ✵

It took two hours for the trio to finish reciting their tale, and though I felt the press of time, I didn’t begrudge them their moment.

“Well,” I said, when they at last fell silent, “that is quite the tale.”

“You’ve done well,” Safyre added warmly. “All three of you.”

I nodded. “Agreed.”

The three stiffened proudly.

Smiling, I turned to Safyre. “You’ve given them their faction tokens?”

“I have,” she replied. “We are running low on them, by the way. There’s just one left.”

I grimaced. I would have to find the money to purchase more soon. “What about the farspeaker bracelets?”

“We could do with more of those too, but we still have some spares.” Safyre gestured to the trio. “I’ve given them their bracelets as well.”

“I don’t need it,” Nyra volunteered. “I have telepathy now!”

I grinned. “You do, true.”

Nyra’s second Class was that of a hedge witch, and in addition to granting her the herbalism and deception skills, the Class had also made her a psionic. She now had the same psi skills I had.

My smile faded. “That also means you can enter Atiras’ Mind Trials. Do you think you’re…”

“Ready?” she prompted when I ran aground.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

For a moment, I said nothing, measuring her resolve, then nodded decisively. “Very well. Inform Sulan you have my permission to enter the Rings.”

Safyre glanced my way. “You are not returning to the cave with us?”

I shook my head. “It’s better if I head straight to the brotherhood. Tell Adriel I’ll take the new nagians’ oaths when I return.” I had delayed my meeting with the Brotherhood’s Huntmistress long enough as it was it. “With every passing day, it becomes more urgent to find out where they stand.” And if they would aid us as I hoped.

Safyre sighed, but did not question my priorities. “What about Ghost?”

I grimaced. Hopefully, by now the pyre wolf’s anger had subsided. Still, as evinced by this morning’s Game messages, she appeared to be faring well enough. “It’s better she keeps doing what she is doing in the nether. The training will do her good.”

Safyre didn’t argue, but I could see she didn’t agree with my decision. “Very well. I’ll see these three back to base.”

“What about us?” Terence asked abruptly. “What are our orders?”

I exchanged glances with Safyre.

“We could use them,” she allowed, but didn’t push the matter further.

“The Eastern Marches?” I asked obliquely.

She nodded.

I bowed my head, pondering the matter for a moment, then blew out an exasperated breath. Only hours ago, I’d been admiring the twins’ newfound confidence, yet here I was hesitating to send them into danger.

Trust that they are capable. Trust that they can do what you ask.

Raising my head, I glanced from Terence to Teresa. “You recall what I told you of the Eastern Marches?”

Teresa nodded eagerly. “Every word,” she promised. “You were trapped there for days.”

“And you gave the sector to the Blades before you left,” Terence added.

“Not quite, but close enough,” I replied. “It’s been about two weeks since Nyra, Adriel, and I escaped from sector 75,172.” I paused. “You know what that means, right?”

Teresa nodded. “The Blades claim on the sector is still new.”

“Which means they can’t yet restrict who teleports into or out of the sector just yet,” Terence added.

“Correct—on both accounts,” I said. “But more crucially, it means our information on the sector is two weeks out of date. We don’t know what’s happened since we left. The Blades may not even be in control anymore. The Riders may have returned in force and kicked them out.” I shrugged. “Or, who knows? A third party like the Reapers may have decided to take a hand in matters.”

Teresa pursed her lips. “Alright, I get that. But why do you care? I thought we were done with the Eastern Marches?”

“That’s right,” Nyra put in. “In fact, the only relevance sector 75,172 has is—” Breaking off, she inhaled sharply in realization. “You’re bringing them back!”

Terence frowned. “Bringing back who?”

I turned his way. “Tomorrow—or perhaps, even as early as today—Ceruvax, Farren, the Pack of the Reach, and the Bane Wolves will exit Draven’s Reach and enter the Eastern Marches.”

Teresa’s eyes widened. “Oh my!”

“And as Michael has pointed out,” Safyre began, “we don’t know what they will find when they do. Odds are that nothing has changed at the portal tower. The town around it is probably still deserted. But it will be good to have confirmation.”

Teresa nodded slowly. “You want us to scout the sector?”

“Not the sector,” I corrected firmly, “just the environs of the town housing the exit portal. Once you’ve confirmed it’s still vacant, you’ll wait for Ceruvax and the others to arrive, then escort them back to sector 18,240.” I paused. “Do you think you two are up to the task?”

The twins stiffened to attention. “Of course.”

I rose to my feet. “Good. Then, you best be about it.”

✵ ✵ ✵

You have lost snake bite and ghoul maker.

Before the others left, I gave Nyra the two rank five daggers I’d looted from Sintar. She had the daggers skill, and they would serve her better than they did me.

The trio’s return was yet another worry shed from my mind. Now, I thought wryly, I’ve only three other things to stew over.

Shael and Anriq’s expedition.

Zekiel’s.

And the brotherhood.

Still, I had a fair idea what the outcome of the first two would be. The third though… that was the wild card. Notwithstanding Kesh’s involvement and Safyre’s assurances, I knew things with the brotherhood could go either way. Convincing them to help was crucial.

So, let’s hurry up and do that.

Drawing psi, I saw to my final preparations.

You have cast mimic, transforming your visage into that of Havick, a level 187 human scout and concealing your Powerful Initiate Mark. Duration: 10 hours.

You have activated the simple mode enchantment of the belt of the chameleon. Your armor and weapons are now hidden.

Disguise in place, I spun on my heel and made for the forsworn at the end of the room.

Safyre had given the two the coordinates of the sector where I was meeting the brotherhood. “I’m ready,” I told the pair.

Inclining their heads in silent acknowledgment—the two were some of the most reticent players I’d met—the first began chanting.

While I waited for the portal to open, my gaze drifted idly across the Roost’s shuttered windows. I’d not so much as glanced outside the building to see what was going on in the sector. And while I was eager—desperate even—to gain more insight into Saya’s fate, I knew now was neither the time nor place to investigate further. Until sector 18,240 was reclaimed, I couldn’t afford to be distracted.

Llewyn has opened a greater portal to sector 45,104.

“Thank you,” I murmured, turning back to face the newly opened gateway. This was it. The biggest unresolved piece for my grand plan. Would the brotherhood cooperate?

Time to find out.

Inhaling deeply, I stepped through the portal.

Transfer commencing…

Passage completed!

Speaking of the Adjudicator, I remember when Mickael touched it in the nexus, and it replied with "hello mickael", then mickael just leaves without replying, and never went back to see if he could talk to it and get more game insight. I don't know, if I was him I would be very curious about it, no one seems to know much about the Adjudicator, but he's just sitting there in the nexus? I think Mickael is the only one who was able to talk to him, but then.. why wasn't he more curious?

Olivier Combe

I was coming from the angle that players only need 100 attribute points into an attribute for the skill cap on skills relating to that attribute to be raised to 1000. And I assumed that players/powers who have lived for centuries would have grinded their skills into the 1000s because they have had a lot of time to do so. And because of that Micheal has low skill levels compared to them and he should not be as strong as some who have lived for a long time. But Tom reminded me that there was a soft cap on skill level gained in relation to the strength of the foes. Also David in the above comment makes a good points about blood memories. But I think sometime soon, Micheal will have semi-resolved that issue in that he will have some way to gain more memories, albeit I am guessing with difficulty.

Tesset

Michael actually IS weak. Remember he has 4 lesser memory slots and 2 greater ones. But he only has 1 of each memory type. Given the intrinsic power shown thus far of his, Adriel's, and Losken's memories that is a major disadvantage. Additionally, he isn't going to find it easy to obtain his power equivalent blood memories anytime soon if ever. Forcesworn like Safyre on the other hand get weaker and/or fewer powers... but do so purely by leveling. So the more they level the more extra powers everyone else will gain over Michael. The reason Michael seems to be overpowered is a combination of genuine crazy and a very well built "character" such that he can usually murder his foes quickly enough that they have trouble fighting back. Admittedly, Sire's strain (notably this one is more like 3 Ascendant points by itself atm) and Elder Wolf definitely changed the equation because the sneaky bastard has 2 extra Ascendant points. But the older powers (Loken) likely have occasionally managed to obtain things like that over their centuries of life AND have the extra Ascendant points they gained from murdering all the Primes and other "challengers" (power mark advancement). Additionally, he suffers from another major weakness... if Loken reveals his wolfiness... the Powers will endlessly hunt him. Especially if they learn he's both awakened his bloodline AND is a powerful initiate. Edit: And yes, obviously the Adjudicator is nowhere near neutral. He tried before, is trying now, and if Michael fails he'll try again to restore the Primes. HE wants the Primes restored and likely for similar reasons that Draven does. He doesn't find the new Powers to be fit stewards. And the newest chapter demonstrates why very well.

David Brewer

I mean… I guess I don’t get the part where you say he is weak. He is maybe weak towards physical attacks but he has to be hit… his deception and dex help him counter those types of attacks… and his void armour nullifies 1v1 magics. And remember… book 1 he has a self realization that he was a gamer. Same realization that his runeguard character had. It’s almost like their thinking is not standard in the GG. Our guy takes mega risk and gets rewarded in kind. I have constantly said I don’t think the adjudicator is non-biased… and I think this individual is stacking the game to give Michael the tools to balance both the nether and the powers. Kind of like the architect in the matrix lol.

obiwann

That really helps to put into perspective how Primes have an intrinsic advantage in being more individually power (although less numerous), allowing them to fight higher level opponents in comparison to the Force Powers. 🧐

Thanks for the detailed--and extremely long :)--analysis. I appreciate it! (really :)). To address your most pressing concern: skills gains. It is true that attributes act as an explicit cap on a player's skills, and early on in the Game, attributes ARE the key driving factor in how fast a player may gain skills. However, there is a second cap on skill gains too (a soft cap), which comes into play late game (and maybe even mid-game). This is comparative level. What this means is that a player must fight foes of the same or greater level in order to continue gaining in skill. This mechanism was explained in book 3 when Michael was lost on the tundra. Despite the months he spent there, his skill gains slowed and eventually stopped because the foes he was fighting were lower leveled than him. I'm sure you can see the implications of this for Powers like Loken. Eventually, their skill gains will slow (or stop) because they cannot find enough high level foes to fight. Another thing to mention: the whole premise of the Game is: HIGH RISK, HIGH REWARD. The more risks you take, the more you are rewarded. This is applicable not only to feats, but skill gains too. I.E: a player will gain in skill faster, the higher the level of his foes. It is precisely for this reason that Michael's skills are relatively high (compared to his peers) . He is constantly fighting alone and against higher-leveled foes. I hope all that makes sense and is consistent with the story thus far!

Tom Elliot (Rohan Vider)

I won't address most of your post, but as far as the blood memories... they are intended to be both individually more power than equivalent force powers AND to have the potential to have more or higher tier abilities than force players. It's these abilities and the potential capabilities of them that purportedly caused Loken and the others to rebel against the Primes as the "Prime" tier of blood memories has no equivalent among the forcesworn powers and as such probably had some connection to the ancient Primes shattering the Forever Kingdom. As for secret blood, that particular blood memory is simply insanely valuable if and ONLY if hiding your House Wolf related classes and spirit marks is important. It is insanely powerful... at an extremely niche effect. It doesn't after all protect him from inspection, feeling his non Wolf marks, or do anything for him in direct conflict. Oh and imagine Ceruvax with secret blood... a were mage that looks like a wolf... yeah that hid anything.

I've been meaning to leave a comment for a while about a few things and then some predictions 😁. This is NOT a rant. I love the series. Hopefully most of it is constructive criticism, and honestly most of it is not even criticism, just observations. Hope some of it helps you Tom. 1. I feel like we have been too hyped up about finally getting another blood memory and then even more so about elder form. Which I love and it is ABSOLUTELY beastly. But I think we are all kind of forgetting that Michael is technically... kind of weak. And thats because of his skill levels, which are abysmally low. Tom, you stopped putting the skill cap after a while and I think everyone forgot about it (unless I missed something and this is no longer applicable). But for example the skill cap for Michael's mind related skills is somewhere around 1880... Now the reason why i say this is because it was stated that players and other powers take their time. Players don't seem to age or age very slowly. Powers like Loken have been around for CENTURIES if not millennia. They will have had time to grind their skill into the thousands. Now some might point out and say that Micheal is unique and has had a lot of boosts in attributes from his traits and others would not have been able to accumulate the same amount. But I am willing to bet that anyone who has become a power is not ordinary and has been able to accomplish something themselves and will have attribute boosting traits. And more importantly attribute gems. I don't think it was ever mention if there was a cap on the attributes a player can attain from attribute gems. I think there should be, at least something like for every level a player gains they can only get 1 attribute from an attribute gem. Because if there isn't, then the powers and even their envoys would have accumulated attributes in the hundreds if not thousands over the centuries. That said if there already is a hard cap on attribute gems. My bet is that a power will have at least 100-150 attributes in their main attributes at least, which means skill levels somewhere of 1000-1500. Supreme powers like Loken I would say at least 300+ attributes points per main attribute, meaning skill levels around 3000+. They would have at least that much to be able to have abilities at tier 12. As much as Micheal has accomplished he has been playing the game for only about 2 years, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. 2. There is definitely a need for a time skip, where Micheal grinds the skill levels. And unless, yet another emergency/thing pops up, after he secures the sector, saves Saya and steals the chalice he should take a decade or two off just to train skills. None of the other tasks are urgent, the Guardians can wait, the Prime has been there for centuries and he/she can wait, and the werewolf pack can wait too. 3. Not an issue, and maybe I am the only one but it's bothering me a little that we've never had an ability that's related to dodging. We got str related abilities before one related to one of his first skills. I hope we eventually do, and it's something super epic and rare like vanish. Also I feel like there is a need for him to find a way or for the game to give him a boon for something he does where he can remove some of his abilities. I am fairly certain this will happen. A one off, super rare thing where he choose which abilities to get rid of and strip things down to the bare essentials. Get rid of anything that cannot be upgraded, is no longer relevant. Stunning slap, conceal weapon, ventro, mimic etc. 4. That leads me into the next thing. Am a little unclear on the power scale relationship between force abilities and blood memories. It was stated that Primes had unleashed some insane abilities against the Force Powers during the war. And in book six (i think) when we were given a breakdown of blood memories and force abilities and how many can be attained, and at what levels. I assumed that the power of the Primes and houses came not from an inherent difference that blood memories were stronger than force abilities but that Primes had an ultimate one as well as more high tier ones (ancient and godlike). But reflecting back on the series, Micheal's void armor is capable of blocking force abilities with its skills alone while he used a lesser blood memory (secret blood) to block the analyze of perhaps the highest tier analyze in the game, Loken's, along with an insight skill level I am assuming is at least 3000+... That seems strange to me, but perhaps I had misunderstood and blood memories sit completely outside of skills and abilities system and surpass it entirely to the point where a lesser one can easily trump over any skill level. That said I feel like I am nit picking here. No story is perfect, and this has had an incredible amount of thought and love put into it. Finding something minor like this is quite a leap that needs to be done to come to it. 😅 Now predictions 😄 1. At the end of completing this quest and securing the sector, Micheal will be able to evolve his class again or gain a trait or something along these lines which will do one of two things. 1.1 If he does another class evolution I am leaning towards this options. Some "Primal Origin Wolf" :D and either allow him to generate blood energy by killing nether creature or players or anything and thus solving the issue of him not being able to get memories. And he should be able to pass this trait on to his followers and thus solving the issue of other members of house Wolf getting new memories. 1.2 Or give him a trait similar to bold blood where he is given 2 ascendant points for every class evolution to a higher tier. This is because it will not make sense for him to invest into anything else aside from sire's strain in the future, anything else will be a waste. BUT that means that he won't get any new ascendant traits, which will be boring. 2. He saved his class point to be able to upgrade the void armor next again. The next upgrade or the one after that is the point where it will become truly broken. Because it will no longer need to be damaged to steal an ability, I am assuming on the next upgrade he will just need to be affect by any type of magic for it to come into effect. And the upgrade after that he just needs to be close to the magic for it to come into effect. This is significant because of the tier 12 wards in the Nexus. At this point he can bypass them (and on a side note use them when he steals them to boost the defense of his home sector.) 3. Which leads me to the next prediction. After he saves Saya he will go steal the chalice. I have a suspicion it can remove the force marks, classes and abilities of darkforce sworn. This will solve Anriq and the werewolves pack's problems of them not being able to progress their wolf lineage. For doing this, Michale will receive some incredible boon or one of the above trait i mentioned. The chalice was found in that dungeon in the wolves valley and that will also prompt Micheal to secure the valley and explore the dungeon himself in the hopes of finding more artifacts like that. Also thank you for the chapter! Looking forward to more awesome stuff from Micheal 😊
