lol i understand why bonnets are impractical from a filming standpoint, but i think they're really cool as an item that would probably have been made or decorated by each character. lydia is shown to have a talent for decorating her bonnets and it's something that comes up a few times during the series. making straw braid for bonnets was one of the ways an unmarried working class girl in the regency period could earn some pocket money, and it was a specialty in the area that pride and prejudice is set (hartfordshire). that's one of the reasons i appreciate period details in costuming, it's the history of female labor given honor and recreated to keep the crafts alive.

Not a super lot, but there is way more detail & more about my faves The Gardiners (i might be spelling their name wrong, Lizzie & Jane’s Aunt & Uncle, who you haven’t met yet really but have in later eps). You did mention kids at a party, but that was the Lucas family having an informal gathering, whereas kids would not be seen at a Ball like the one Bingley three or the public one at the beginning of the series. Usually kids aren’t seen, but it shows the Lucases are kind, the father has been Knighted, but they don’t maybe follow all the “rules” of upper society. If you ever dive into Sense & Sensibility, this is shown better with the youngest sister of the main two sisters the book focuses on. She’s generally only seen at their house or at informal gatherings & is largely left out of a lot that happens (because she hasn’t come out). Caroline, though being stuffy & rude, isn’t being THAT weird when she is surprised the Bennets being all of their daughters to events. Usually it would only be the oldest unmarried daughter or maybe some of the daughters. Them taking ALL of their daughters everywhere is because of their particular circumstance & lack of sons. Lydia, & probably Kitty & Mary, would probably have been kept home until Lizzie & Jane got married… at least in some families. You guys notice quite a lot for a first viewing. I do find it funny how you can’t keep track of all the characters. Unserious, white people often look alike. 😹 Truly joking. As a barista / bartender, people really do look alike unless you pay attention.

Mr. Wickham immediately being more shady is a drawback of the other adaptations, and an additional reason I prefer this version. I knew someone growing up who acted identically to this depiction of Mr. Collins. It was odd, and I have awkward stories as a closeted sapphic whom that guy had a crush on. A group of us watched portions of this together with him, and he didn't notice that we all talked about how much he was exactly like Mr. Collins, *that's* how much he was like Mr. Collins. And I grew up in an environment where all of the priorities in life were very similar to Pride and Prejudice (I was raised in a cult), so it was extra weird.

2024-08-06 01:57:58 +0000 UTCFirst I must admit in the book, I totally did not get at first, Wickham is a bad guy, I thought why should Darcy end up with Elizabeth, he is horrible so I think that was kind of point to write Wickham first so likeable and charming but with red flags, that when you are watching or reading it for the second time, you are like why did I not notice that, he is an asshole from the start. Also I think it is okay to love one version more or both. I love both by same amount for different reasons. For example I like 2005 Darcy much more I like how he lights up more I love the asthetic of the movie, how the creaters work with subtle movie ways to try to convey what 1995 series just outright says and 1995 version feels much more like theatre play or like literal book in the tv series, so it is very close to book, they are using a lot of dialogues from book, so if you really love the book I get why people are so obssesed with the series, I personally love both ( I mean I love almost every adaptation of P & P and I love how every adaption makes me look at passages in the book in different light) but I think it is okay to gravite to different type of adaption. Also I know lot of people mentioned Bride and Prejudice, which is excellent but I would also recommend the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, which is web series on youtube, it is kind of vlog style modern version of Pride and Prejudices and it is gneius, but also I do not think it is very good format for watching it like this series but if you want to watch it alone I really recommend it.

2024-08-05 22:45:27 +0000 UTC41:32 According to my grandma (she loves history), in those times, at higher class social gatherings, it was very rude and disrespectful to just walk up and talk to someone you haven't been formally introduced to. For example, Sir William had (very enthusiastically) introduced Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy at the beginning, and they were able to talk casually after. So when Mr. Collins did what he did, Mr. Darcy was very offended! :O Anyways, I'm so happy you guys are doing this series!

2024-08-05 00:51:07 +0000 UTCI think of my mother when watching this version. I used to watch it all the time and she would join in when she could. She passed away almost three years ago. One of her favorite parts was the dogs howling at Mary's singing! Tip for telling the girls apart: each has their own hairstyle. Jane has a bun at the back of the head with little braids usually, Lizzie has hers pinned up with the curls framing her face, Mary has a plain bun, never fancy, Kitty has a bun closer to the top of her head and a few wispy curls around her face, and Lydia has wild hair with curls to one side.

2024-08-03 08:55:27 +0000 UTCI appreciate both versions of Mr Collins. 1995 I would sum up as pretentious and annoying whereas 2005 is more aloof and awkward. Over time I have felt more sympathy for the hopelessly clueless 2005 Collins vs the more cocky and assumptive version here.

I've read my book copy, which was a hand-me-down already, so many times that the spine has at least 20 defined lines on it and opens at a specific part if you drop it. Due to my heavy reading of the book and watching the 1995 mini-series so many times, I can't get enjoyment myself consuming the media anymore. Not that I love it any less, but more that I have to vicariously live through someone else. I've loved seeing you being introduced to the series. As you noted yourself it's more of a slow build, which I don't think is for everyone but it allows for you to get more detailed world-building and a deeper understanding of why everyone interacts the way they do. In terms of the embarrassing social interactions, I'm afraid that will build for the next 4 episodes, and will still be there until the end.

2024-07-31 17:51:40 +0000 UTCI think the 1940 version is the first (I'm trying to embrace the idea of being inactive and useless so I'm not checking imdb to confirm) and is the one that introduced me to the story. It's missing a lot and changes some things but it's Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson. I remember it being more silly than anything else - I think that's how they implied satire(?). So if one wanted to see the first, one should consider watching.

I agree that the movies glossed over a lot but it made sense because they only have maybe 2 hours to cram everything in. All the movies are so focused on building Darcy and Elizabeth that they usually lose the details about why Darcy was so against marrying Elizabeth in his first less than stellar proposal and why he would convice Bingley to not marry Jane. I also love how you pointed out how much of a foil Wickham is to Darcy because that is precisley what Jane Austen was doing in the books! I can't wait to see more of your reactions to this series!

You already know he's the "bad" on but he's so dang naughty and peak Hugh Grant snarkiness that you hate him but love him...LOL
