This show has to have the record for the largest amount of unlikeable characters...just after the first episode! But I'm captivated

GAThrawn

Yeah at that time with the active conflict at the time and the rather large loss of life in Northern Ireland and in mass bombings in England. That would have been more bias than mere racism of today (or in my life time, and I'm 60) in the US.

I haven't seen this, but I might stick with it. My mam and sister likes this show.

Hope you like it! There’s a ton of detail so always something new to catch no matter how many rewatches later which is one of the reasons I love it!

Lee-anne

Embarking on this journey with you Travis. I've never seen this show before but so many people have said I really should, you watching it is a great excuse to start.

Hearing some of the accents in this made me really want you to react to Derry Girls

AJ

This is another show I have sponsored on other channels. I hope you are paying attention. :)

Ah I forgot to say that the Fahrenheit order means it’s ok to kill - “shoot to kill” order basically - I think the term is authorised use of lethal force.

RANKS (Low to High): • DC - Detective Constable • DS - Detective Sergeant • DI - Detective Inspector • DCI - Detective Chief Inspector • DSU - Detective Superintendent • DCS - Detective Chief Superintendent • Chief / Chief Constable • Commissioner Glossary and Terms: • bent = yes it means gay but also means corrupt in terms of police officers • Bacon bap = bacon butty/bacon roll • Plod = uniformed police • Brass = higher officers • AC12 = AntiCorruption Unit 12 (Hastings is in charge) • Bollard = one of those chunky posts in the pavement or road to stop cars passing • CID = Criminal Investigation Department - basically non uniformed police detectives • The Bog - slang for The Borogrove Estate - a large council estate in the Line of Duty universe that is known for lots of crime and drug activity. Greek Lane is on The Bog. • TO20 - Tony Gates’ unit (the squad) • Romany - Leah references the squad getting a write up for not having gender diversity - so a woman applying would likely have more chance of getting in than a man - she later says to Kate that she’s 1/4 Romany, meaning Romany gypsy, an ethnic minority - so she’s implying she has more chance of getting on the squad assuming positive discrimination VICTIMISATION Hastings talks about him and his friend being Catholic in basic training - it’s important to note he is talking about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Catholics (Irish nationalists and republicans) were a minority and wanted Northern Ireland to leave the UK and join Ireland as a whole. Protestants (loyalists and unionists) wanted Northern Ireland to remain part of the UK. The Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland were unionist (and mostly Protestant) and known for being very brutal. The IRA and others were republican paramilitaries (Catholic). Basically Catholics as a minority were attacked a lot by the unionists and of course attacked back and this is what the basis of the 30 year Troubles were. Hastings said “no one is blacker than me” because he’s talking about being discriminated against as a Catholic in the RUC when they covered up the murder of his friend and his own injuries by the pipe bomb they were deliberately set up to encounter purely Because they were Catholic in a mostly Protestant police force. It’s an interesting choice of phrasing, but it makes sense contextually as a response when Steve is saying that Tony had to work harder than anyone else to get where he was because of being discriminated against for being black, because Hastings had to do the same in NI due to being discriminated against and in fact set up for injury/death, for being Catholic. I wonder if they used that phrasing as part of Hastings character - we already know he’s “old school” and “un-PC” after his conversation in the pub with Steve where he talks about a girlfriend so it could be that they chose to use that line as it fits with his character not always saying the right thing. It’s a definitely a line that always gets a big reaction from people!

I'm so excited for you to start this journey! I will say, remember EVERYTHING! lol. Okay... WE SHALL
