Charlotte was always one of my favorite characters, but this was the episode where I just fell in love with the actress. She's amazing.

2025-02-07 00:17:54 +0000 UTCI don't even know how to comment this. I had already seen that episode and yet I had to press pause several times even though I usually always watch your reactions in one sitting and rarely press pause. It even felt weird to put a like on this. Your reaction was on point though.

2025-02-06 15:25:09 +0000 UTCThis episode is brutal but so good. I know it may sound insensitive but I appreciate seeing a more vulnerable side of Charlotte. She's always acting so tough and sometimes cold, but here she feels utterly powerless. And man, it is hard to see someone go though so much pain, both physically and mentally. I understand why she doesn't want Cooper or anyone to know the whole truth and I respect Addison for keeping the secret, but at the same time I think Cooper at least deserves to know. Also, I think it was really clever to kind of show it from both sides: Charlotte on one hand and the POS on the other. But it wasn't trying to humanise him or make us feel sympathy for him. Having him be interrogated by Sheldon, who has no idea that Charlotte is the woman he raped, was also really clever. As difficult as it is to watch it, I think it's one of the best episodes of any TV show. I've seen a few rape storylines in shows but none compare to this. It feels so realistic and it's disturbing (especially the flashback at the end), but it's not TOO much and it doesn't feel like they're going in for the shock factor. I applaud Shonda Rhimes and the other writers, not to mention of course KaDee Strickland who plays Charlotte AS WELL AS Nicholas Brendon who plays her rapist. KaDee in particular is absolutely phenomenal. I am shocked I haven't seen her in more things. Fortunately, I have not been raped or sexually assaulted and I can't even imagine how traumatic it is. To everyone who has been through that: It WAS NOT your fault, you did NOTHING wrong and you did NOT deserve that. "Fun" facts/behind the scenes: KaDee described filming the rape scene as less challenging than portraying its aftermath. She and Nicholas Brendon agreed on a safeword during that scene due to its brutality. She and Paul Adelstein (Cooper) were kept apart on set until they were shooting the scene where Cooper sees Charlotte for the first time, in order to get an honest reaction from them. The episode was written in collaboration with the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). In preparation, KaDee consulted with their representatives, visited the Rape Treatment Center at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and researched the reactions of survivors and their families, all of which helped her with her performance. She participated in a PSA which was shown at the end of the episode in the initial broadcast, to increase awareness of rape and sexual abuse and took on an active role in the organization. See here: https://youtu.be/CBmchmoMH18?si=6hZa6kTu4EG2xwOP. After its broadcast, RAINN reportedly had a 500-percent increase in service requests, which temporarily crashed its website. She also said that she had received many emails from survivors. Ratings/reviews/awards: This is the highest rated episode in the series and it attracted 10.18 million viewers, marking a 44% increase from the previous episode, which had an average rating of 7.68 million. It's also the last episode of the series to have more than 10 million viewers. E! News' Jennifer Arrow described the rape scene as "the most realistic depiction of rape in media history" and noted Nicholas's casting as an evil character in contrast with his more light-hearted performance as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She compared the way they handled this storyline to similar storylines on other shows around that time, such as Naomi Clark of the CW teen drama 90210 (so good!) or Gemma Teller Morrow of FX's crime drama Sons of Anarchy. All three characters were "strong, no-nonsense ladies who generally dominate their environments." TV Fanatic's Steve Marsi called the episode reminiscent of Law & Order: SVU. Many people, including me, were shocked that KaDee did not receive a nomination at the Emmy Awards. BUT she did receive the "Female Performance in a Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline" award at the 2011 PRISM Awards. Furthermore, she and Shonda received a RAINN Hope Award, and Shonda received the "Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series" at the 2011 NAACP Awards. The episode as a whole was nominated for the PRISM Award for "Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline (Mental Health)", was cited at the 2011 Television Academy Honors for exemplifying "Television with a Conscience" AND was cited as one of the best TV episodes of 2010 by TV Guide and the Futon Critic.

2025-02-06 14:31:29 +0000 UTCI survived a rape when I was 19(I’m now 39) and it was hell, I didn’t have extra injuries like Charlotte but it took me a long time to get through it(my attacker got let off because he was 16 at the time and we had to go through children’s court), I was on anti depressants for a few months and had counselling for a while through the local sexual assault service clinic. Having close friends and family around for comfort and to be a sounding board throughout recovery etc is vital.
