I hate how they spent a whole season basically ruining Dereks character, because if you think about it, Derek turned into a dick out of nowhere, he spent seasons making up for their rocky beginning just to do a 180 out of no where. So how are you going to kill him off with little to no redemption? It pissed me off so badly like nah Shonda that was dirty as hell. This death hits so badly for many reasons, personally I loved derrick and Meredith so the way they handled it was atrocious , this was a vital part of the show and it was not handled as it. Yes, I wish he got the Christina Yang goodbye but again, poorly executed. I stopped watching Greys shortly after this season and personally don't regret it.

I can see you have strong feelings about this episode and I understand grief and shock present in multiple ways. I am still standing by my opinion on this fictional character and the writing behind this and last few episodes. I didn't appreciate thick writing on how Mer's thriving without Derek nor Amelia's speech about losing someone. I think she deserved better. So did Derek. And all of us watching this for 11 seasons.

I watched the series live at that point and was in a state of shock myself going into the episode because I couldn't believe what was about to happen.

Meredith literally showed up at the hospital in shock, then stayed in a state of shock and grief the entire time. It's so easy to say what you would've done when it's not you in the situation. Have some empathy.

2025-01-07 19:08:04 +0000 UTCI think what took me out was when Amelia told Meredith "You've never had to claw your way back from losing someone you love and until you do, cut me some slack" was a sign and I was shook when she said that, because, it was like dang girl, go easy on Meredith, she has dealt with a lot of stuff regardless that is just as bad, if not worse than what you dealt with. I do feel like Meredith reacted more upset when Derek got shot, she acted more scared then, but it could be just because she has children now and may feel like she has to keep it together more. I also thought when she told Derek "I can live without you, I just don't want to" was a sign that it would be coming soon too I just love this show, and I can rewatch every episode again and again with no issues. Not too many shows that I can do that with.

2025-01-07 09:44:49 +0000 UTCI loved Derek and Meredith. The last few years he was an egotistical dick half the time but I looked at his character on a whole from day 1 til now. After this episode I swore I would not watch another greys episode or another Shonda show. It took me 4 years to start watching it again.but not weekly and that only lasted a couple of years. I haven’t watched another Shonda series. Not the fire/ambulance one, not HTGAWM and not Bridgerton. She’s brilliant her shows are as excellant, but killing off the person in scandal from Pope & associates. (Travis has passed the episode but still I don’t want to spoil it) and Derek let alone Lexi and Mark and George it’s too much. Also the putting couples together and breaking them up because she didn’t like the public dictating that she had to get Meredith and Derek back together and swore she would never listen to the audience again. I didn’t want to get invested in any more of her characters. (I later found out that Bridgestone is a book series and the shows follow that she doesn’t have the same kind of decisions but it’s principle now)

That inoperable tumor he managed to get, that dude from the hospital… was amazing. And him being killed off in this way.. OFF BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM WITH HIS BRAIN.. his specialty and him narrating it the whole time.. HURT 💔 he was a dick half the time, and especially the previous couple seasons but I think we can all agree.. he was here from the very first episode.. he deserved better than this 😭💔

She told him recently " I can live with out you, but I don't want too." And I think her knowing that, is what gave her the strength to pull the plug on him so fast. This episode literally is what makes the annoying will they, won't they break up episodes this season earlier make sense for me at least. We can actually see that she was thriving with out him when he was in dc. Shonda is an evil genius. Also I am not a Derek fan either. Hahaha. He's annoying.

He has children. He and his wife were just reconnecting. And this episode literally ruins me every time I watch it. I boo, hoo cried at the end. And it’s also so unexpected.

He LOVES his kids and Meredith and the reason he quit his DC job was because he would never leave his kids and Meredith for good. I think the actor didn't plan on any ever returning, so there was no way to just say "he's working somewhere else and he's with his family at home even though you never see him!" But still damn, this episode is like a gut punch.

Samantha Sloyan also portrayed Jeannine Locke on Scandal, the presidential aide in S1-3 who was framed by Pope & Associates for having an affair with Fitz in the S3 premiere. AAs far as I know, she's the first instance of Shondaland Talent Reuse who appeared first on Scandal, then on Grey's, instead of the other way around.

There was a lot of behind the scene drama going on with Patrick Dempsey at the time so it could have been tied in with that. It was no secret he was leaving the show and Shonda was mad at him.

Then you have to wait months before you find out. I enjoyed binge watching every season back-to-back, but then I got to the end of all the seasons and then had to wait for the next ones from then on. At some point I was so waiting for it that each episode I was like "is this the one?" and even though I remembered that the previous one ended with Meredith and police lights, and that this episode started the same way, every episode I was still waiting for it even more! I like Derek and I never got through this episode, even if it was literally more than a decade ago. Every time I'm sad and I need a good cry, I rewatch Grey's Anatomy starting from this episode. And it kills me every time. I think that what's more painful is that at this point, it was difficult to imagine that Derek would actually die. He's been the male protagonist since the first episode of season 1! This is the character death that took almost everyone by surprise. And for first time watchers, it's always a punch in the guts! I feel you, Travis!

2025-01-06 16:35:25 +0000 UTCi’ve been waiting for this episode whewwww😭 watching it live made me stop watching for a good year at least deadass i was pissed😭me and my mom were literally GOBSMACKED like no way no way no way they’re killing derek??? derek??? it was all just so fucked uppp! making his character arguably the worst he’s been since like S3, turn him around, make me love him again, then kill him off??? and not even in a season finale?? ???? crazy despicable work Also word on the street is this, Patrick Dempsey (derek’s actor) was cheating on his wife. shonda rhimes and Ellen Pompeo were both close friends with his wife. once shonda found out about the infidelity, she killed his ass off😂😭 shonda has zero tolerance for certain shit i guess lmao and an ex executive producer said that shonda and patrick did not like each other, he would supposedly hold the set hostage in way, didn’t care about the show much anymore and was a general dick on set, even ellen had issues with his attitude. according to him, several cast members had PTSD from him terrorizing the set. it got to a point where (allegedly) shonda said either he goes or i go. i’m sure if she did find out he was cheating on her friend, that would’ve exasperated their issues. but yeah i do remember being real mad watching this, it felt like the show itself lost something when he died; he wasn’t a great character, in fact i hated him more than i like him, but you cannot deny that he was an integral part of this show. and poor amelia, poor zola and bailey and ofc meredith like this is a death that will ROCK every damn body in this show.

I bought wine and told everyone in my life to not contact me because I was watching Derek's death. Even knowing it was coming (and hating Derek) I cried for hours I agree about giving more people the Cristina Yang treatment. It drives me nuts. Shonda thinks differently though. She has said she thinks it's better to kill a character than to think of them moving away from their kids. (this was her excuse for killing Mark) Because it's so much worse to have your dad living in a different city than you than it is for them to be dead....Ok Shonda.

By this point in the series some fans stopped watching because of all the horrible traumatic deaths...ie the plane crash in Season 8 Finale, the hospital shooting and on and on. It seems at least once per season Shonda kills off a major character. Blah.
