Grey's Anatomy | 7x18 'Song Beneath the Song'

Comments

Travis, you should totally react to ER. I used to love that show.

Karen McQueeney

To be fair, without Callie living, Arizona gets no say in anything over the baby. Legally, had Callie died, Arizona would have been the dead mother's fiance which is not a position of legal standing. especially if Mark didn't want her involved because of how she treated him. Like, it just wouldn't really have made sense to have that happen because Arizona has no rights to that baby in any way so like they wouldn't have actually had to raise the baby together.

Lina D

I never really fully appreciated this episode. The first time, the shock factor was too much and on rewatches I liked it a little more each time (this is my 7th or 8th rewatch) but your reactions made me actually love it. I laughed out loud so many times and you actually did the impossible- you made me appreciate Owen Hunt singing. If you could do a reaction video to healthy food and exercise, I'm thinking I might actually have a chance of getting into both for once.

Marybeth Sbrogna

This episode always has me screaming at Arizona every time she says the truck came out of nowhere, like ummm no if you actually paid attention to the fn road it was most likely there for a while dude!!!! 😭 and I don't blame mark for clapping back at Arizona after she called him a sperm donor 👋 Your face when Alex started singing was mine the first time I watched this episode 😂

Kylee Marie

This might sound harsh, but in a way I think it would have been so much more interesting if she had actually died at the end of the episode. Sara doesn't get heaps to do moving forward, and it would've taken Mark and Arizona down interesting paths, seeing as they don't really like each other but would have to raise a child.

Ashton Bult

I have a love-hate relationship with this episode for reasons many people can understand. However, watching this with you was a goddamn party thank you for making this such a good time.

Jazzy Jay 💃🏾

sara ramirez singing the story literally sends chills down my spine

This episode is so weird… Like, I get what they were going for, but they missed the mark for me. Honestly it feels like they saw the success of the ”Scrubs” musical episode and wanted to do their own version, but failed for (IMHO) three reasons. 1) In the ”Scrubs” episode a patient with an aneurysm heard music (based on an actual case) and the cast only sang when that patient was around. They imply in GA that Callie was hearing music due to a brain injury, but it was far less well-defined, and they sang whether she was there or not. 2) ”Scrubs” is a comedy and can get away with a musical episode. GA is a drama, expecting us to take it seriously. 3) ”Scrubs” had original songs (like ”Everything Comes Down to Poo” and ”Guy Love”). They were able to write material that fit the plot and the characters. GA used songs from previous episodes, which is cool in theory but making a jukebox musical in a medical show makes for a quite incohesive experience. And who the heck chose the specific songs? The tone keeps shifting, and why the hell is everyone so damn horny all of a sudden when Callie and her baby are at risk of dying? That said, some of the vocals are fabulous in this ep. Sara Ramirez is of course the star with her A+ vocals, but Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson are stunning too. The three of them singing ”Chasing Cars” is the highlight of the episode for me. I’m a huge fan of McKidd since he was on ”Rome”, and it baffles me how some Owen-hating fans complain that his voice is bad. The actor can be a wonderful singer even if you can’t stand the character. I’ve even seen pple leave really mean comments on YouTube videos of him singing with his band, which I think is over the line. To be completely honest I have ”main character might die” fatigue with this show. It happens far too often, and the episodes often feel unrealistic to me. I get you can’t compare GA to ”ER”, ”ER” was a top-notch medical drama and GA is more like a soap opera set in a hospital. But I can’t help but think of ”ER” episodes like ”All in the Family”, which were so gripping and engaging to me because they felt so frighteningly realistic (even though that show took dramatic license too). It’s all personal preference though of course. I guess I just wish there were people out there reacting to ”ER” as well. Heck, ”ER” even did the ”John Doe is George” type plotline first, and IMHO much more effectively. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Cheers!

Tingeling

Many people hate this chapter, but I love it, I liked it since it started when I saw it years ago for the first time, I never skipped it

carolina garcia

am I the only one that loves this episode? I feel like the music at certain times makes it more emotional. (imo)

Hannah Sanders

Idk why they decided to do a musical episode lol. I really wish they hadn't. Arizona saying the truck came out of nowhere - when we all know she wasn't paying attention, and she was starting a fight with Callie over Mark, when she was the one that had left, she was a shitty gf. Idk it just really irritated me. I'm with Mark here - he and Callie are the family, Arizona just bails. She's a great doctor but a terrible girlfriend imo.

Loki

Hope you and baby are doing well🤍sending lots of love your way!

Nikki S

I hate how this show made it seem like Mark took it too far with AZ and had to apologize to her, when what she said was worse since that is his child and he was not wrong. He apologized and she didnt, but she isbthe one who should have apologized. She is constantly acting like it is just her and Callie and Mark is insignificant! That final song is my favorite of the episode, and honestly one of my favorite songs in general!

Lucile Byrd

when they started singing that threw me off lmao

Her Limted

i FLOVE this episode, and i’m so glad you seemed to enjoy it as well. Sara Ramirez’s version of “The Story” is one of my all time favorite songs and i think it’s better than the original. and all the songs performed have been played on the show before.

Skylizzels

WOW. I am NEVER watching this episode any other way but this way from now on. You were giving me ✨ everything✨ I needed to get through it and then actually appreciate it 😆❣️ lmfaooo.👍🏾

Charissa Kay

This episode gets so much hate. Sometimes it’s fun to switch it up! It’s on my top 10 episodes

Vianeyth Rios

I usually skip this episode (you either love it or hate it) but I'm glad I didn't you made it enjoyable

Jtozee

Sandra Oh saved herself from embarrassment for not singing in this episode 😂

Catelyn Dela Cruz

Sara Ramirez who plays Callie is a Tony award winning singer she is amazing but all in all I think they all sounded really good

Brandy Murphy

The unspoken episode 😂

Lex Larae

Not my favorite episode just so weird seeing Hunt and everyone sing it’s just not for me but I can see how other people love this episode I just think it would have had more impact for me if there wasn’t singing

Kayce Daniels

The look on your face throughout this episode! Slightly worried about Callie and very worried about who is going to sing next. 🤣 you are so honest and emotionally invested, it's great to watch with you.

Bella

The happy Addison dance was so real 🤩

Monica

this episode gets a lot of hate I don't know why it is one of the best episodes of the whole show.

Jeanette Dawe

LMAOOO I was waiting for your reaction to the musical aspect of this episode. Sara Ramirez, who plays Callie, is a broadway alumn, which is why they have such an amazing singing voice, they were also in several musicals from 1998-2005 and they graduated from Julliard (a prominent performing arts school in NYC). They even charted at #37 on the Billboard top 200 when they released their only album but sadly hasn't released a whole lot of music after the 2010s.

Rory (TetraSheik)

Will you be able to look at any of them the same way from now on? Lol

Kammy

I love this episode so much! Sara's voice is amazing, especially in the last song. I remember when she slept with Marc and I knew what was coming up with her premature baby at 23 weeks and I hated to think about it because at that moment I was in the hospital at 23 weeks pregnant with a high risk pregnancy and trying to get a few more weeks. Even with some complications I am now at 34 weeks in pregnancy. I had to lie down a lot the last 10 weeks, so your reactions help me get the time go by. Thank you! 😊

Noelle

Your reaction to this was amazing! I was SO excited and it was so worth it! I’m so glad you loved Owen’s voice since so many don’t! And your reaction to karev was super funny cause I haven’t seen anyone react like that to Alex haha can’t wait for more!

Chloe James Grant

So many things to say - Travis I felt so bad for you in the beginning of the episode all that emotion was so intense! I wonder if your doggy was trying to comfort you and that’s why he was being needy. Anyway , I am in the I love It camp for this episode! Seattle Grace Mercy Death 💀. I sometimes watch this episode and others like it just for the feels. I actually watched your reaction twice and I still cried both times 😭. Loved ❤️ how excited you were for Addison. I think this is the longest comment I’ve ever made 😂.

Nettie

Ohh that’s right, thank you for reminding me, as English is not my first language I end up getting a little confused too

Gustavo Menezes

Ms Addison said I’ll be the peds specialist .. but vocals? No thank you.

Tiffany Lemke

If Meredith is serving vocals you had to know cali was surviving lmao

Tiffany Lemke

Can’t get over KEPNER WITH THE BACKUP VOCALLLSSS LMFAO

Tiffany Lemke

I skip every musical show episode so this is only the second time I’ve seen this episode cause I always skip it in my rewatch 😂

Letitia Hunt

Hey, man. Sorry for kinda requesting this episode early. I think you know why I was anxious about it now lol, but I bet you have plenty shows to watch and an schedule to maintain. I just shoot my shot hahhahaa. Also, I guess a lot of us don't mind needy dogs on reaction videos, and this dog is soooooo cute

Leticia Schmitt

oh shit you’re right. TRAVIS i take it back! don’t watch it LOL 😅😅

Gabi andrade

Tell him not to look at the comments on the YouTube video... the top comment is a huge spoiler!

Angelina Sargent

maaaaaybe ;)

Travis Manning

I mean at this point with how loud and excited I can get if you wear headphones thats the chance you take ... lolol

Travis Manning

oh i wasn't aware, i've changed it, thanks for letting me know

Georgia Turner

Georgia Turner

Sara goes by they/them pronouns

Ruby

Where can I watch the behind the scenes? Is it on YouTube? I love this episode 😁❤️

Michaela Evans

Since you clearly miss seeing Addison, are we gonna have Private Practice Season 3 anytime soon? I know you gotta be curious after that insane season finale! 👀👀👀

Michaela Evans

RIP headphone users at the end where he's yelling, 'Wake the f*** up'! I wasn't even wearing headphones but it was so loud lol! 😂 I'm glad you enjoyed this episode 😁I get chills Everytime I hear Callie singing that last song. So good❤️☺️

Michaela Evans

Yeah, Meredith's vocals were definetly really edited.... I can't handle that song on the clouds and then everyone suddenly having sex and singing it. But it's def one of my favorites episodes of the show, personally, because I love me some musical stufffff lol....

Leticia Schmitt

this episode is iconic. I got chills whenever Callie sang

Jeanette Dawe

first of all, your reaction was hysterical. second of all, all the songs chosen were ones that specifically gained fame after they were on the show. so interesting

Cassandra Ryan

Sara did an interview where they stated that executives at Disney saw them on broadway and basically came up to them and stated they wanted them on their network. They let them basically choose what series they would be on and she picked Greys. So glad they did. They are amazing in this show.

Kartrina Muhammad

You should check out Kevin McKidds band “Speyside Session” they do a song called These Are My Mountains and you can hear his Scottish accent! If you watch his Going Home video on YouTube he did a few years ago you will get to know him so much better! Man I want to go to Scotland so bad! Ohio just ain’t doing it for me right now! Lol

Mishel Yanik

the car scene is weird yes, but it gave us karev singing. so hot haha :)

Chloe S

travis 'are we supposed to know these songs"?? 😃. YES WE ARE LMAOO their in multiple episodes as background. Also this is Kate Walsh's (addison) favorite ep even though she does not sing🤣. Shonda Rhimes basically made this episode because the cast could sing especicially Sara (callie). Not my fav ep but the singing eats everytimee!! Watching your reaction slowly figuring out this is a musical had me weak😭 and the "sing to me" to jackson got me good lolol. The cast actually did sing these songs live too funfact. Also when Owen says "CALM DOWN" in sing i cant take it seriously w everyone reactions💀😭, although James Pickens (Richard) did not sing in this ep he did at the live concert and he can sangg! Ellen Pompeo(meredith) didnt really wanna do this ep but she still tried and her voice is so cute:) Also Sara Ramirez was on broadway so they can sangg for sure

m

This whole episode put me through it.

Tina Stewart

As someone who watched my mom go through a traumatic brain injury the singing is her brain trying to compensate for the injury, what people are saying to her and her own thoughts. She is trying to fight through the damage. When someone has a TBI they can have hysteria and see things or hear things differently then how they actually are as a way to compensate.

Helen Moore

The fact that those song were on the show at multiple times before is what got me when I first watched this episode. I always love musicals in shows, and Sara Ramirez is a freaking good singer. Those vocals on Brandi Carlisle's (the last song) song were from heavens ! If you have the opportunity, you should def watch Sara Ramirez sing it live. Goosebumps for sure. xx

Nessie- Je lis, et alors

Sara is SO talented! They have such a beautiful singing voice. It's insane, I've never heard a voice quite like theirs.

Rebecca Williams

Sara Ramirez is incredible, They even has a Tony award

Georgia Turner

I don't recall him singing at all in Enchanted but read the interview about this episode when he said it was definitely to protect the viewers he didn't sing. 😆

JennaB

I meant the problems happened to my child. I’m not saying that the baby on the show will or won’t have them, I was speaking about them happening to my daughter. I just wanted to clarify because I don’t want you to think that I was giving you hints about what is going on in the show.

Karen McQueeney

I love this episode so much. And oh Sara Ramirez has an amazing voice. Kevin McKidd (Owen) he was in a band. There is a video on YouTube where they talk about how they made this episode. And all of the problems they discussed about the baby being a preemie, they happen. My oldest was born at 24 weeks gestation and she had Retinopathy of Prematurity (RoP) which caused her to be blind, she didn’t get the medication to mature her lungs so she is on a ventilator overnight, she has Cerebral palsy, I mean everything a preemie could possibly have, she got it. She weighed 1 pound 7 ounces at birth and she turned 23 this August. So I mean, they spoke the truth. And the NICU was crazy scary to me because alarms were constantly going off. But yeah, unpopular opinion, I loved this episode. Except I have to look away when the accident happened. Love seeing your dog! He’s a cutie!

Karen McQueeney

also not sure if you’re up for it maybe on your free time i suggest you watch the behind the scenes or “making of” of this episode especially bc it’s really interesting:)

Gabi andrade

I really salute greys anatomy team for trying something like a MUSCIAL out on a very popular show. this turned out really good in my opinion. some people love it some hate it and fair. like sara ramirez said not everyone is going to like everything. i personally love it. 🫶🏻😭

Gabi andrade

Every time I comment I’m talking about the character :)

Travis Manning

Sara Ramiez (Calle) was in Spamalot the musical back in 2005 and she one a Tony Award for her role as The Lady of the Lake.

Tyler Mckenzie

Sara Ramirez deserves all the awards.

Erin

its tricky as they are playing a cis woman, but comment wise if its talking about callie its she, if its talking about sara its they 🥰

Charlieeee

Which is weird cause can't Derek sing? I feel like I remember a song he did in the Disney movie with the princess coming to NY or whatever. The name is slipping me right now.

Angelina Sargent

Hahaha so I have a ton of hate toward this episode because it is soo cringey. Just the singing mixed in with their lines made it so awkward to watch and some of these scenes I just kept feeling like it was probably super awkward to film for everyone...like when marks crying in the stairwell and lexi comes in and starts lip singing at him while trying to fit her lines between her song. Hahaha and you were right some of these guys can't sing at all. BUT my love for this episode purely comes for callies last number. She was beyond incredible and that rasp in her voice is so amazing!!!!! She was a Rockstar. She was the only part about this entire episode that didn't make me cringe. I will usually skip this episode on rewatches and just youtube that last number before moving to the next episode.

Angelina Sargent

I already altered my comment, my bad! 🤗

Marleen van der Wielen

Here's a listing of the other 4 soundtracks they released back then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey%27s_Anatomy_(soundtrack)

Bridget

sara goes by they them! just so you know :)))

collette

sara goes by they them!! just so u know :))

collette

This was my favorite reaction vid yet. 🤣 Sara Ramirez's voice is INSANE

Heather Owens

your reaction to the voices are some of the best reactions ive seen yet, i loved it

fl0wergard3ns

Sara goes by they/them pronouns. And I agree, their voice is perfect.

viktorie jalovcová

You're completely right, my bad. I changed it!

Marleen van der Wielen

"Calliope means music" and her speech at the start about not truly knowing much about the brain and her wide eyed reaction to Owen and Miranda singing...so good. I hate this episode got/gets so much flack but lots of us love it so much! Dempsey opted out of singing as well as Sandra Oh but they said it wouldn't really have been fitting for Yang to join anyway. Lol

JennaB

they :)

Charlieeee

I believe all the songs they sang were songs that were played previously during memorable moments of the show i.e. the bomb episode, Denny dying, etc Your face when Alex came in on his part had me DECEASED😂😂

Jaci

this is in my top 3 episodes EVER!!! sara ramirez’s voice is absolutely gorgeous they KILLED ITTT!!! sooo excited to see this reaction when i finish work 🫶🏼

collette

So happy to see it again with you! The 'How to save a life' cover is my fav and I listen to this version only now. If you notice, when they sing, '...I lost a friend somewhere along in the bitterness..' the first time, Teddy looks at Owen. Its these little things that make this show so real!

Radha Karia

You did not disappoint!

Lacy Hause

Sara Ramirez's voice, my god, pure perfection. No wonder why she won a Tony 🥰

Gustavo Menezes

But here's a playlist with their versions of the songs. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5q1Q8HKjubRPrtwiPBnypY?si=592aEUY-SPCGsVcBtUHCyQ&pi=u-9Nu4YL26TM6a

Bridget

Hey ! Finally !!! One of my favorite (and most traumatic) episodes (top 5)

Nessie- Je lis, et alors

The songs in the episode were all covers and part of the soundtracks they released with the show.

Bridget

Sara Ramirez (Callie) was a broadway singer. Everyone sang in this episode beside Derek , Cristina , Richard & Jackson

Edgerrin Brown

you’re reaction to alex!!! love it

Ellie Alderman

The person who plays Callie, Sara Ramirez, has a bunch of musical/broadway experience. Which makes sense, given how amazing they did in this episode. Loved your reaction, been waiting for this one!

Marleen van der Wielen

I love Sara Ramirez so much😍 That voice is insane!!

ingrid vedeld

OMG your face is priceless! like, i dont even remember what it was watching this for the first time back in the day. People have such strong feelings about the ep haha i love it

Sacid Ve

Yesssss! 🎤🎶🎵🤱🏻

Dustee Lodholtz
