It’s pretty good. The setting is during the warring states period of China. The main character is a war orphan who joins the army as lowly soldier and eventually becomes a general. Also follows his friendship with the future Emperor who eventually unified China. It’s was also made into an anime. The beginning kind of reminded me of your story.
