Syl 5 Stats / Numbers

Comments

How much of a sheet do Vee and Leon have, are you tracking those similarly or are they not needed because there's less bloat?

I am not sure how you would introduce it in a book, but if you make the long/full stats its own bonus chapter, then it would be easy(ish) to click skip on an audiobook, if it was read, then a listener could move on to the next chapter. That said, Syl's complete stats are extremely long compared to some. Long stats are something I skim for interesting detail, but I listening can get tedious. Some narrators read them really fast.

I definitely like having these stat dumps every now and then just in case I want to look something up cause that way you have one specific place you can look for relatively up to date stat info instead of having to comb through tons of individual notifications, but yeah they definitely are something that is skimmed over 90% of the time, but the other 10% when you want to look something up it's very noticeable in stories where the author stopped doing stat dumps and you are just left piecing together the scraps yourself. Also as others mentioned, if you do background leveling it's nice if the difference between the last time we saw the skill and it's new level are shown just so you can tell what leveled up and by how much. Also I noticed that Soul sight and Soul sense are at level 9, so those are another two traits that I'm looking forward to seeing what'll happen when they hit level 10. (Probably nothing much special, but the uncapping is always fun anticipation even if just for the sudden boost in range and detail Syl gets)

My general feeling about prog fantasy stats nowadays is that I like that they’re there. But don’t really care about them. Every few books, I’ll be interested and it’s nice at the end of a book if I’m curious. But generally if it takes more than 20seconds to hear or larger than one phone screen’s worth of stats. Then I’m checked out. I trust the author to do the math 😂 Regardless, I have full faith in you to do what’s right for your story and I’ll love it either way.

So many potential skill to deconstruct...

I really hope you leave the status updates in. There’s so much going on as far as skills go, it gets impossible as a reader to keep up with it, so it was really nice to get an update on what’s going on. In fact I wish we got them more often.

if you're going to change it to background level's for some can you do [Light Magic LV 3 > 4] so you can see what level's up?

My thinking in this kind of stuff is that I want to see things that have significantly altered their capabilities. I dont particuarly care if she is 10% better at x or y the exact instant it occurs but it is nice to see the accumulation of all of these small improvements occasionally. One of the better I have seen to do this is to just paste in the status sheet at the end of every chapter, that way you can know exactly where they are at at each point in the story without it getting in the way of reading.

In text form you can just skim the stat dumps, although in general I'd prefer a list of changes to the full dump, or if you're going to include full stats, show what has changed. Spotting which skills have changed is otherwise tedious. For audiobooks, it's probably best to omit the stat dumps entirely or just include a list of the most important changes, plus a full dump at key points in the narrative, either at the end of the book or at thd end of each major section. For Cthulhu's sake don't lead off the audiobook with a full stat dump. One slight variation which might work is to put stat dumps in their own chapters so they can be skipped easily (and probably open such chapters with a statement that this chapter consists of a status dump.) But overall I would REALLY prefer a summary of changes most of the time. Those stat dumps might be an easy way to bump word count, but for the most part they're just tedious padding.

Ive been thinking about writing an litrpg :/ my first thought is i should write a program and database i can use for stat tracking. Would also let me output the stats so i could copy paste it into a site with the proper formatting.
