Syl: Chapter 339

Chapter 339: A Crabby Situation

Arthropod?

Vee was confused by the rewarded trait, but after reading the description, she realized that it included insects, arachnids, and crustaceans.

Vee quickly put two and two together and assumed that the god behind Leon must have wanted a method for them to communicate without Syl present. Although Vee couldn't help but feel somewhat bitter about the reward.

Why couldn't it have just been the full version of telepathy?

Vee's race was incapable of learning it naturally, which is why even though Syl tried to share it, she was unable to buy it. Likewise, it was the same reason why Syl had to keep mimicking the trait, despite having probably earned enough proficiency experience to obtain it for free!

The spider queen Qhilleeqeth had been able to communicate with Vee using a trait called [Telepathy (Kin)], and had even shared it so she could buy it if she wanted. However, Vee had turned it down, as she didn't really want to talk to other spiders. Qhilleeqeth had the trait herself, so Vee could save the point.

Now I've ended up getting a slightly better version… It's still not what I really wanted, but I guess it's better than nothing.

Vee sighed and attempted to use the new trait to talk to the crab that was still hiding inside its bizarrely well-fortified shell.

"Hello?" Vee asked.

"Oh my giddy aunt!" Leon cried out in horror. "Now there's a voice in my head, can this day get any worse?"

"I can turn you into experience points if you'd prefer," Vee replied, dripping with venomous sarcasm. "My next evolution is still far away."

"You're the bloody arachnid assassin!?"

Vee rolled her eyes. "And you're the idiot crab I was asked to save."

"Save me?" Leon snorted. "You've ruined me, you harlot!"

"Okay, I guess you've decided on becoming experience points. Hopefully you're worth at least a level or two," Vee said and began to tighten the webs around the shell, causing an ear-piercing screeching noise to emit as the webs slowly dug into the shell.

"Ahhh!" Leon cried out in terror; any of his previous bravado was washed away. "Keep your hair on, I was only joshing!"

But Vee didn't relent, the screeching noise increasing in intensity as the web began to grind and dig into the shell.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Please forgive me, Miss scary spider!"

Vee paused the assault. "That's a little better. Just remember who's in charge."

"Yes! For crying out loud, yes! I submit!" Leon pleaded.

Vee sighed, although she didn't release him. "So are you also an [Experiment]?"

There was a cautious pause until Leon finally responded, "Unwilling, yes. Are you also in this predicament?"

"You, me, and a bunch of others, from what we've gathered," Vee replied. "Unfortunately, my partner isn't here right now, or she could give you a more detailed explanation."

"There are more horrific creatures like you?" Leon shuddered.

"If you think I'm scary, wait until you meet Syl," Vee snickered. "Syl's a one-slime army, and future dragon slayer."

"Slime?" Leon replied curiously. "Is this the elf slime?"

"Syl can turn into an elf, yes," Vee replied. "I'm surprised you knew that…"

"The voice now called Unc suggested I join forces with an elf slime… Although admittedly, I hadn't put much thought into it."

"Apparently, we were supposed to urgently save you from mermen, but it looks like that's no longer the case?" Vee asked.

"Those bloody mermen," Leon cursed. "They hounded me relentlessly! I only managed to escape from their clutches through a fortuitous event, and have been fortifying myself ever since."

"I guess that explains the cannons…" Vee murmured.

"Which are now ruined, do you have any idea what I sacrificed?" Leon snapped.

Vee frowned and began to tighten the web again, causing another panicked flurry of apologies from Leon.

"If you didn't shoot first, ask questions, never, you wouldn't have ended up in this situation. You also almost ruined my island dream home!" Vee asserted.

"I'm sorry, Miss Spider! Terribly sorry! It won't happen again!"

"Vee."

"I beg your pardon?"

"My name is Vee, not Miss Spider."

"Oh. Right, introductions, my manners must have been lost in the explosion…" Leon grumbled.

"Watch it," Vee warned, momentarily tightening the webs again.

"Yes! I will Miss Vee!" Leon obediently replied. "I was called Leon back in the day, before being confined to this crab-like existence."

"I'd say it was nice to meet you, Leon, but that would be a lie. Honestly, this whole situation and quest to save you has been a mess," Vee moaned.

"I'm terribly sorry. I ask you to please direct your ire towards Unc."

"As much as I would, I don't want to get smited," Vee sighed. "Maybe I can ask Mother to put him in his place."

"Mother?" Leon asked. "First Unc and now this. Where are these names coming from?"

"Syl, my traveling companion and partner in crime," Vee answered. "Gave them nicknames and the three of them started using them."

"This… Syl, person, gave nicknames to gods?" Leon asked in disbelief.

"Slime, not a person, but yes. I'd love for Syl to resolve all of this, but unfortunately, she's deep at the bottom of the ocean," Vee answered.

"Deep at the bottom of the ocean?"

"Yup, almost directly below us if I'm not mistaken."

"Oh… Your friend might be in a spot of trouble then," Leon replied. "Assuming you mean below the oceanic trench, then that is where the mermen live."

"I guess Syl found them before me," Vee grumbled, feeling like she'd lost the competition.

"Umm… Are you not worried about your friend?" Leon queried.

"Worried?" Vee snorted. "I wasn't joking when I said Syl was a solo army. If anything, I expect those mermen to be reduced to slime food and their city to be exploded in a day or two."

"I… See…" Leon murmured in astonishment. "Speaking of explosions, how did you manage to stop my fortress's self-destruct, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Oh. Well, I just expanded the space around it," Vee answered honestly. "That way, the explosion ran out of energy before it reached normal space again."

"Y-you expanded space?" Leon stammered.

"Yes?"

"H-how!?"

"With magic, of course," Vee replied candidly.

"This accursed magic can defy physics?" Leon asked, sounding horrified.

"And much more," Vee giggled.

"Preposterous!" Leon retorted. "How on earth do you expand space!?"

"Well, we aren't on Earth anymore," Vee pointed out.

"Even so, that's utterly absurd! What's next, erasing time?"

"I know a guy who might be able to do that," Vee answered mischievously.

"You... know a guy?"

"Yeah, he's an elf chronomancer," Vee answered.

"Please tell me you're pulling my leg?" Leon pleaded.

"Nope, not at all. There are elves, dwarves, magic, monsters, and everything in between!" Vee replied.

Leon let out some pained noises but didn't respond further.

"Now… What to do next?" Vee pondered.

"What do you mean?" Leon asked.

"Well, the way I see it, we have two options," Vee explained.

Leon gave a defeated sigh. "I suppose I don't have a choice in the matter of my involvement?"

"Well, after Syl meets you, you can probably do whatever you want," Vee explained. "But unless you want to be hunted for the rest of your life, then we are probably your best bet."

"Look… I just want a quiet life, building things, maybe doing a few artificer experiments. I don't want to go on some grand adventure fighting dragons and demons and who knows what else."

"Sure, that's fine," Vee replied. "We aren't going to force you to do something. We were just following a quest since we're all in the same boat with the [Experiment] thing. Heck, if you want to just build stuff, we might have a good use for you."

"A use for me?"

"Well, we want to build a home base that we can always return to for safety. We had some ideas to keep it defended, but honestly, we were relying on the remoteness of its location as its key factor."

"Wouldn't a remote location be terrible for a home base?" Leon asked. "Unless you're planning to explore only the ocean."

"Oh well, we can teleport and create portals. So we can get back to base no matter where we are," Vee answered.

"Teleporting and portals…" Leon stammered.

Vee giggled. "As I said, we're at the tip of the iceberg. Wait until you hear about the dimensional root network the elves have and the living tree we want to grow."

"I'd rather not, if I'm honest… All this talk is shattering what little scientific knowledge I'm desperately clinging on to."

"Then I've got some bad news for you, because I think when you meet Syl that's going to be thrown out the window, set on fire, and exploded with slime."

"...Slime explodes?"

"For Syl it does," Vee answered.

Leon made more pained groaning noises, causing Vee to snicker. This crab had no idea what he was in for.

"Anyway, moving on... We could use a builder, and Syl can probably get you more resources than you could ever dream of," Vee explained.

"That… I'd be lying if I said it doesn't sound tempting."

Vee nodded. "Good. Well, the way I see it, we have two options for now."

"I'm listening."

"We can either clear out the volcano rubble and start laying the foundation for the island. Or… We could try to help Syl finish off the mermen."

"I'd prefer the first option," Leon admitted.

"I figured as much," Vee sighed. "Sadly, I can't really get down there myself; the pressure is too much for me.

"Then I'm definitely picking the first option. I'm not going down there again until I'm confident those mermen are gone for good!" Leon declared.

"What did you even do to upset them? Or do they just naturally hunt monsters?" Vee asked.

"Well, at first they were actually rather nice," Leon explained. "I was having an extremely rough time, but when the mermen found me, they started feeding and taking care of me. I presume they wanted me as some sort of pet, but when I didn't listen to their demands, things took a turn for the worse."

"Sounds actually quite similar to Syl and the goblins," Vee commented.

"Goblins too… Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised after seeing those brinelings," Leon sighed. "Anyway. Once I realized that I'd outstayed my welcome, I decided to flee."

"And they hunted you down just for running away?" Vee asked.

"Well…" Leon gulped.

Vee rolled her eyes. "What did you do?"

"I may have… Dismantled and took a few pieces of their infrastructure," Leon replied. "But only a little! Who knew they would take it so personally…"

"You stole from them? Why the heck would you do that?"

"To upgrade my shell, of course," Leon declared. "It was the most advanced resource I could find at the time, and it did wonders for me. From there, I explored shipwrecks and discovered a wide range of treasures. Of course, all of that paled in comparison to those dungeon bricks I appropriated."

Vee shook her head. "Oh great, it sounds like we've got a kleptomaniac crab on our hands."

"I resent that remark!" Leon defended himself. "I only took a little off the top. I just didn't expect such… Visceral reactions from the inhabitants."

"Well, from one arthropod to another, make sure you never steal anything from Syl. Especially not a slime core, or not even the gods will be able to save you from her wrath!"

"I shall spare no effort to avoid such a tragic outcome," Leon replied somewhat nervously. "Of course, that's assuming I decide to stick around after meeting this slimy friend of yours."

"Well, if you want access to orichalcum, obsidianite, deepstone, floatstone, mithril, and who knows what other types of strange things Syl's eaten at this point. Then I don't think you'll want to ever leave," Vee said, chuckling to herself.

"Wait, the slime eats metals!?" Leon asked in disbelief.

"Oh, trust me, Syl eats everything and anything," Vee chuckled.

"I believe it's now my turn. Why?"

"To recreate it. Syl can even duplicate metal," Vee answered.

"Duplicate metals!?" Leon cried out.

"And potions, and poisons, and who knows what else at this point."

"I'm finding this extremely hard to believe," Leon admitted.

"You haven't even heard the worst of it. Wait till you hear about the exploding worm!"

"I'd rather not—"

"Too bad!" Vee interrupted. "Because I'm going to tell you all about it while you fix the mess you made."

"But—" Leon attempted to protest.

"No buts!"

Leon gulped nervously. "Yes, ma'am."

Vee giggled to herself, not expecting the crab to give up to her bossing around so easily.

Now let's see how much work we can get done before Syl returns. I hope she deals with the mermen soon.

Comments

Vee is having way too much fun!

Zorgdub

Thank you for the chapter!

Jamie Mann

Ha! 😂 Awesome 😎👍🏼 Tyftc 🍻

JW Saxby

Thanks for the chapter

Michael Zinkstein

Awesome. We have someone else to put up with vee. Obviously I'm exaggerating. I don't hate vee. I merely dislike her sometimes.

jonathan

TYFTC! Fun fact, crabs are literal blue bloods, because their blood is copper based, instead of iron based like ours.

Jason Hardman

Also the more i think about it, wouldn't the ability to command her own slime cores while separated from her, be an effect that would require her to become a slime queen? Or more accurately a primordial slime empress.

Peter Smith

If these two create the actual dungeon, and have syl create the monsters using slime, then i would assume that leo would become a dungeon crab, while vee would become arealm spider.

Peter Smith

Feels pretty random but yes it 100% will

enderman

Vee might be genuinely confused on that point because of how un-Human-like Syl’s thinking is, I wonder? Maybe she thinks Syl’s a reincarnated super-slime or other monster. I can’t recall if Syl’s ever mentioned what limited memories they have of their poisoned heir reincarnation. (EDIT: Thanks for the correction, I couldn’t remember.)

BlastYoBoots

There might be a tsunami coming if the explosion is really strong.

Rumply

Thank goodness only arthropods. 🕷️

Rumply

I wonder if luminous slime would be a counter to shadow magic. If Syl is emitting light in all directions than she won’t have a shadow. Nothing for shadowboys to attack or hide in. Big win and Syl dismissed it.

Hayden Leech

Thank you for the chapter! I love the pacing of your writing and taking your time going into the details. .. I also can't wait to see the depth charge explosion from Vee and Leon's perspective lol

Tahliofnit

Syl is definitely a person even though she's a slime.

Cathsaigh

All will fear the exploding worm ! The one true trump card of Syl the slimy !

Monster Royalty

Tank oo fur da chap!

Engineer4God

I feel like the comment section did a 180 from encouraging Unc to stand up to the bullies last chapter to encouraging the cute spider bully this chapter.

enderman

Or the opposite where the Tsunami clears out the rubble making it easier to build on.

enderman

He could, but he should also understand that the fantasy world with magic uses the fantasy world with magic variant of Orichalcum.

enderman

I think when Unc said there are others in the same situation he took that a bit too literally and thinks that all [experiments] are from Earth.

enderman

Also, did Leon just ignore that Vee is also an Earthling?

Nemesis

OMG, this might be my favourite chapter yet. I hope we get a snippet of Vee recounting her first encounter with Syl to Leon, and how much easier Vee has been on Leon 😀

Nemesis

Tftc

Plateworm

I know, isn’t she a delightful little power-mad terror? :D She’s absolutely incorrigible. We ought to be thankful she’s bonded with Syl who is keeping her MOSTLY in line while they’re together, else she’d potentially be using the newfound power she gained working with Syl to cause Dragon Experiment levels of catastrophe.

BlastYoBoots

Thank you for the chapter!

mbncd

I was thinking along the same lines, possibly a parallel timeline even

Lionheart Copperhead

That was pretty shitty of Vee all around: she was intruding, trying to break past Leon's defenses, and actively escalated the fight (so she definitely can't claim self defense). And then when she had Leon captured, she repeatedly threatened to murder him in cold blood for not agreeing with her.

Bi-Dailey

Considering that Leon seems to remember more of his past life and has a rather scientific bent, could he possibly remember that Orichalcum in our world was just bronze/brass?

JAndy

I get more of a Big Enby / Little Sister vibe from them, but far from me to extinguish a good ship.

BlastYoBoots

From Leon’s obsession with physics and seeming unfamiliarity with magic and magical tropes, I wonder if he’s from a different ERA of Earth’s history, like World War 2 England? Certainly an era where people were at less liberty to read Fantasy fiction, and definitely before video games. That would explain his fixation on fortifications, his over-the-top British-speak…

BlastYoBoots

Also why does Leon seem to be a poor caricature of a Brit?

Natalie

Also, why did Vee just assume they were from the same original planet, or not be shocked that Leon and also from Earth? And seems to have more recollection of it to boot, given all his Earth-isms

Natalie

He sounds like he remembers even more of his past life than Vee, or at least some different things. He also sounds like he was quite a bit older and set in his ways than Vee when he died. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if he used to be an engineer at a defense contractor.

JAndy

So when is Vee going to admit that Syl has essentially become a wife to her? I don't get quite the same vibe the other way round but here, in Vee's dialog, the long-time married couple vibe was heavy.

Sparifankerl

I was about to ask where the air for those bubbles would come from, but then I remembered the enclosure they had for their human captives.

JAndy

Sly is going to have her own version of Fort Knox with all the goodies she has tucked away for this day

joe obrien

So what are the chances the results of Syl dealing with the mermen will include an unintentional mini-tsunami on the surface that undoes at least half of Leon&Vee's work and causes at least some noticeable inconvenience for the inhabitants of the deepstone refinement island?

JAndy

Vee didn't endure all that mind breaking for nothing. She's going to subject EVERYONE to it.

Devin M.

Huh, a person who will quickly realize how ridiculous Syl's abilities are and also will absolutely empathize with the obsessive hoarding of valuable upgrade materials. Yeah, Leon's gonna fit in just fine.

Vorthod Wiler

Can’t wait for syl to blow the mer up >^< I wonder if all bee and Leon will see are just bubbles floating on the surface lol

Ledollarbeanie

Vee was just waiting for the chance to have a minion huh?

G Sharp

Agreed! Vee chapter always tend to be entertaining 😁

Tavis

I adore the snark of Vee.

Hayden Leech
