For me the crown would respresent either or both: the image the prince has of himself and the expectations the parents/ people have of him. So it might strongly hint either his character either perceived by him or others like parents or 'subjects'. Certainly the elements of the crown should be fitted with the atmosphere of the clothing, maybe slightly older in style but not far of. As long as he is not too rebellious that is. tl;dr I now understand part of the dilemma.
Concept works for me. Nothing seems to off. Putting some expectation on him or his background. Putting some expectation on the approximate epoch/ country he lives in (at least mentally).
There are various ways to wear a crown too that might have an impact - well any head wear offers a way of hints on mood and character I guess..
Just me mumbling to myself.
