aunt cass gets bought out
when the tech start-up near the cozy cat cafe took off, so did the local land values. it was becoming impossible for aunt cass to keep up with the rent, even as business was picking up.
the cafe was popular with the start-up's employees, and especially with its newly-wealthy founder. as a frequent customer, he could see from the way she was stress-eating that cass was anxious about something. when he learned her cafe was going under, he made cass an offer, as one entrepreneur to another: sell him the cafe, and she could continue as its hostess. they'd be like partners! there might be a few adjustments here and there, but it would be more or less the same: it would still have cass's touch. he loved the place, he'd hate to see her to leave.
cass would have preferred not to sell, but the buyer was one of her favorite customers, and she didn't know where else to turn. she skimmed the lengthy contract, hastily crossing the "t"s & dotting the "i"s (legal stuff had never been her forte).
strictly speaking, the contract wouldn't legally have been enough to get away with every change the cafe's new owner had envisioned. but once the subdued and restrained "cassie" had been properly trained, she was compliant enough to be passed off as a willing partner in the arrangement. it was, after all, the free-spirited bay area, and some people are into that kind of thing.
