the year was 1848, and the spirit of revolution had swept into arendelle. the masses clamored for a republic, and some radicals even spoke openly of the end of the monarchy. as the situation grew more unstable, a desperate queen elsa turned reluctantly to the notorious baron von permafrost, a ruthless counterrevolutionary who had crushed uprisings in other lands. his methods were extreme - but he got results.

the baron’s scientifically proven method of counterrevolution was as ingenious as it was violent. his spies infiltrated the circles of arendelle’s radical students and laborers, provoking them to carry out bombings and other acts of violence. the ensuing chaos would give him the pretense he needed to carry out a crackdown, arresting and executing the radicals and cutting the head off of the revolution.

but the baron had miscalculated. his spies and provocateurs unwittingly aided the radicals, inspiring more acts of insurrection, and his crackdown only further enraged the masses. matters were made worse when princess anna discovered the baron’s secret prisons, where dissidents were subjected to stress positions, branded with hot cattle irons, and faced other unspeakable tortures. heartbroken by this barbarous treatment of her subjects, the princess had freed hundreds of revolutionaries.

when soldiers refused to fire on a mob gathering across the bridge to arendelle castle, it was clear that the monarchy had lost control. as queen elsa began to panic, the baron von permafrost informed her of a secret escape tunnel he had built leading out of the palace stables, and urged her to flee together with anna.

but the treacherous baron was in fact executing his own plan of escape: by leaving the royal sisters bound and gagged in the stables, he knew that they would occupy the attention of the revolutionary mob long enough for him and his men to reach the real escape tunnel.

as the baron and his men disappeared, anna and elsa found themselves alone and helpless. they squirmed desperately against the tight ropes, their breath quickening around their bit gags as they looked about wildly for some means of freeing themselves. their few remaining loyal attendants were long gone, leaving only thousands of enraged arendellians seeking vengeance against the tyrannical queen and her sister - a crowd whose shouts and stampeding feet were growing louder as they came closer, punctuated by the sounds of palace doors being ripped off their hinges and windows being shattered. the girls fought back a swelling urge to scream as reality sank in: there would be no escape.
