We had a fantastic and deep conversation in Wednesday’s live chat about defining music genre, and I’d love to pick-up on that in today’s live chat. I compiled a bunch of notes from that chat, and put them together to come-up with this group definition (open to discussion today!):
Music Genre: A set of evolving characteristics agreed upon by a community to group certain musical bands or performances together.
Categories of characteristics:
- instrumentation
- playing or singing technique
- lyrics
- emotional content (as separate from lyrics)
- sound production (acoustic vs electric, and also post-production)
- time signature
- chord progression/harmony
- melodic content
- structure of the band
- beat
- song structure
- time period/decade/era
- Cultural
- Geography
- Marketing - how the band or label chooses to promote them
- Confirmation bias. (People may define the genre by their first exposure to that genre)
