POD 120: DAY 5 DISPATCH FROM DEA HQ

With tensions high, the team of SSDP's experts prepare for the final days of the hearing, during this period we heard from Dr. Joseph Palamar and Dr. Mario de la Fuente. Brett Phelps conducts his final questioning of the DEA's expert pharmacologist. Tomorrow's dispatch will cover the final day's closing statements and what lies in store.

Just looked it up, the wiki page says the judge recommended they be schedule 1 😥 is this true? Was there any reasonable argument that was made to merit a decision like this? What a monument to blatant and willful ignorance

Tom Suazo

Loved the series! You’re a really good storyteller 🙂

Nicole

As a newer listener, this series was quite an unexpectedly engrossing listen. Thank you!

Liza Smith

Does anyone know if the hearing transcripts were ever released?

Aiden Mertz

Hamilton, please, when will we have the next dea episode?

Gareth Egerton

1hr 22min in the last episode of the DEA dispatch series… I have zero experience giving legal advice or being an attorney, but would it have been a productive or even allowed to bring up survivorship bias when asking Dr. C about obtaining a DEA schedule 1 license?

Michael McCallum

Yeah someone gave me one (unknown dosage) when I was an older teen and the next day I felt so funky and off…. Careful with mirtazepine. I’m sure it’s different for everyone.

Michael McCallum

I think the point of that IS to be obvious. To scare Hamilton away, or to let him know he’s being watched closely. No one wants to be targeted a federal law enforcement agency. That’s like I’m-shitting-my-pants level of concern.

Michael McCallum

is there going to be another one? this is one of the best series of podcasts ive ever heard.

Ruairi Murphy

Need final DEA hearing. Growing weaker! Must have closure or might go insane or die from bated anticipation. HELP! PLEASE HELP!!!

nova-x13

What so ever do you mean?😉😏

nova-x13

Still waiting on Pickard, and I believe after the FDA/MDMA thing he said he had a Rick Doblin too. Also, he needs to finish this DEA dispatch. He had a Stanton Peele interview a long time ago that he never released... maybe for New Years he'll drop like 10 episodes, or at least shut up about forecasting releases for awhile. Highly annoying, but I still get my money's worth for $5/mo.

B-Boy Bungus

happy holidays Hamilton

Broadcasts From Poor Farm

Are we getting anything this month?

What is happening here on the comments? 🤔🤣

Audrey johnson

Love Hamilton and have been a fan for yrs ! Love his last message and totally support him on keeping drugs legal . However will say I smoked a bit of PCP in the 80s . Was called sherm … supposedly dipped into formaldehyde. I’m a hairstylist and formaldehyde is used in “hair” keratin smoothing products causing hairstylists to get nosebleeds . My understanding was the chemical heated was ingested. I’m not a chemist but would be curious his expertise ?Anyway great guest ! Thanks Dave

Audrey johnson

Dang, I knew this was going to happen as soon as I saw companies start marketing them as “magic mushrooms” or “shrooms”. Of course, I believe it should be legal, but it seems irresponsible to equate it with psilocybin when its effects and pharmacology are almost totally unrelated.

WarioGiant

Just heard about the FDA putting restricts on amanita muscaria, hoping to hear your thoughts

Chloeeeeee

Im chair of SSDPs science policy committee. We will file additional paperwork with the judge by early January, and then he will make his recommendation, which will then be submitted to the DEA administrator who will then make their decision. It will be a few months until we know the outcome of the Hearing

Elijah Ullman

When you mentioned the fan and the man staring, at first I thought well that is odd but there’s no way they could possibly be that clumsy but it absolutely lines up with the cartoonish courtroom chicanery.

Nathan Graber

This brings me a lot of hope, and at the same time I cannot even fathom how mr man is a real person who not only acts like that in front of other humans and isn’t scrutinized but he is paid to do this in situations that determine whether or not laws will be passed that will put people in cages

Nathan Graber

The rollercoaster of emo though!

Loke Guiks

Love you Hamilton. And love you community ❤️ Big hugs for you yall beautiful spirits. Just binged this whole series...so captivating, hillarious, and absurb, it kept me up all night. Good morning world 🧑‍🎄

Sgt. Pepper* Don't forget the reddit post which talks about the album sounding better on the D 👾🦹🏵️

His halloween release was so delightful I would die for Hamilton Holiday Specials

Ericaceous

doxylamine makes me so fucking drowsy I cannot take even 12.5mg without needing to sleep like 14 hours. I stick with diphenhydramine, usually 12.5mg.

Ericaceous

Dying to hear the closing statements, Hamilton are they holding you hostage on Nancy Reagan's yacht? Blink in Morse code if you need rescue.

Spencer Morris

She’s a DEA employee

Kevin Bauer

Thank you for covering these proceedings so thoroughly. I appreciate that you looked up and explained the etymology of carbenera as well.

Matt Hanley

My wife: I bet he's texting other girls Me: *checking to see if Hamilton posted another trial podcast for the 3,775th time*

Leahygaga

Alive, working on a written report and I will release the final day soon

Hamilton Morris

What was the outcome of this? If no outcome then when might we expect some news?

david

I actually came here to see if anyone had heard from him, it’s been 2.5 weeks. Def hoping he’s resting after such a whirlwind event..

vitalsplease

Is hamilton alright? The description talks about "tomorrow's dispatch" but it's been a couple days.

Crypto Tonight

noooo!!! don't try mirtazepine you'll be completely useless the day after. mirtazepine is indeed a great alternative but only if you have nothing to do.

Martin Sona

I recommend half (or even a quarter of) a unisom for occasional help sleeping. (Research interactions first, of course.)

🚯

Hamilton: try 7.5mg of mirtazapine instead of Ambien

RC

Snake building should be closed. ATF and DEA have become redundant. Makes for interesting podcasts though.

SirSmkZealot

Agreed, DEA agents are probably taught that Shulgin is Satan incarnate, hence reading any of his material is blasphemous.

Neighbors Dog

This is one of my absolute favorite passages in PiHKAL, but I very much doubt The Man was making such a sophisticated reference.

Hamilton Morris

Because tin foil hats on for a second, it's not hard to see everything Hamilton's reported dude saying... or sighing... As indicating: hey, maybe dude's eyes are open. Maybe he's letting his asshole fly false flag style. I'm not saying he's double agent lawyer man, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's sending out the message that he's not there because he cares, or because he's preparing a coup de gras, or for any other reason than maybe just the simple fact his job is to be first chair at this shindig and that's as far as bro is involving himself. Because it's really disarming this butt fumble of a job he's doing. It's easier for me to believe Mr. first chair isn't legitimately trash for a lawyer, so he's either a bro coming into work and worthy of that love or admiration Hamilton was feeling, and I really hope it is this because the only other understanding I can come to about Mr. Mann is that he is privy to some ultimate confidence about how this whole thing is going to turn out, whereby he feels he needs to care not even so much as to have quality arguments or manage his appearance in front of the defense or anyone else during the recesses......... To be clear that seems less likely... But if it comes to pass that is what went on here, being an unabashed a****** because you know your prey is cornered, for me that starts to approach one or two semantic definitions for evil. "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!" - Mr. Mann upon finding out he was to chair this hearing, instead of basking in his Dr. Pepper-only walk-in freezer

Pvt. Idaho

another Pacino moment candidate: "Say hello to the bad guy." We could be looking at serious ironic transference where Mr. Mann is concerned.

Pvt. Idaho

Thank you for this, Hamilton. I was really interested to see what DEA scheduling would be like. It's pretty much as backwards as I had suspected. It really seems that with some proper support and backing by citizens we could stop more substances from being scheduled. Also, the Pacino movie he's referencing has to be 1979s "...And Justice For All" It's the main movie I could find where he's a lawyer. Still not sure what he was referencing from that movie.

Paul Edwardson

When do we get to hear Dr Pepper’s testimony ? (oh damn just scrolled down and saw someone else already made this joke.. touche, rabidreject)

nickbaba

I found the material the DEA prosecutor was referencing when he said something along the lines of “Shulgin talked about a drug that would get you high by just thinking about it!” I think it’s a wonderful thought experiment. PIHKAL PG: 458-459 #1 AEM; a-ETHYLMESCALINE “The extension of the two-carbon chain of mescaline by alpha-methylation to the three carbon chain of TMA approximately doubled the potency of the compound. And it was felt to be a completely logical possibility that, by extending it one more carbon atom, to the four carbon chain of alpha-ethyl-mescaline, it might double again. And following that logical progression, the doubling of potency with each additional carbon atom, the factor would be 2 to the 7th power by the alpha-octyl (or 256x that of mescaline, (or a milligram as active dose) and with a side chain of a 70-carbon alkyl group (alpha-heptacontylmescaline) it would take just a single molecule to be intoxicating. This was rich fantasy stuff. As an active compound, just where would it go in the brain? With an 80-carbon side-chain, would one-thousandth of a single molecule be enough for a person? Or might a single molecule intoxicate a thousand people? And how long a chain on the alpha-position might be sufficient that, by merely writing down the structure on a piece of paper, you would get high? Maybe just conceiving the structure in your mind would do it.”

Neighbors Dog

Why Scent of a Woman?

Hamilton Morris

Has someone pointed out the Al Pacino movie is Scent of A Woman?

Penny Wide Pupils

I was laughing out loud for so much of these updates.

Penny Wide Pupils

Does no one else feel that Dr. Pepper probably should have been called to the stand…?

rabidreject

This trail has been more comedic than the US election lol

Grant Woltkamp

I'm dictating while driving and listening... Minute 11 and counting. Hair on my neck keeps standing up.

Pvt. Idaho

Yo Hamilton about that paranoia infecting others, Terrence McKenna does it talk about insanity and what one might paraphrase as the pheromone theory of schizophrenia... Basically he was citing some research indicating people can smell the crazy on other people and it causes them to act more toward crazy themselves. Just to say, I know it's tough in there especially given the circumstances and what comforts you had close at hand to make this hearing.

Pvt. Idaho

Do you think this hearing is possibly the winds of change blowing? The question I’m asking is that is this a sign that possibly the prohibitionist regime is diluting?

Jacob Clarke

That just seems a very broken system. Its strange how a country with so much zeal for independence from government can have such a way of ruling itself.

Meek

I didn’t realize Dr. Carbonaro was being paid for her testimony. Interesting

Thor Correia

No he was not paid to be an expert witness, none of the “petitioner” side was being paid while the government employees were paid for their time. I don’t think Nichols receiving past research grants from NIDA or wherever is relevant here.

Hamilton Morris

And was he paid to be an expert witness?

Meek

Dr. Nichols has been funded by the government many times for his research

Thor Correia

Thinking about how much this is costing American taxpayers is wild. It made me think as well, if the government body is being paid to essentially put on an argument with itself about banning a drug, should the scientific experts contributing to medical developments and therefore public health not also be paid for arguing their point against the government body? Why should Mr Mann and Dr Carbonaro be funded by taxpayers and not Dr de la Fuente or Dr Nichols? Obviously there is a problem with that idea but its more a thought experiment that makes it very clear how perverted this system is. But maybe I’m misunderstanding things a bit.

Meek

SWIM enjoyed this immensely.

Meek

Stickin it to the man!

Octofar

Same same, thanks Hamilton

Vicarious Vue

Thank you very much, Hamilton.

Leigh Bergin

There are dozens of us! I got 1mg blotters off the OG Silk Road back in the day but I never took more than half a blotter because of the vasoconstriction. I would wake up super early, but the blotter on my gums, and go back to sleep, but it would still ruin my sleep the following night. The actual effects were great but I'm too old for that now. Get off my lawn!

Christopher Fye

I bought bromo-dragonfly! Years ago when I was at uni. It was okay, long lasting and too much of a vasoconstrictor for me but it was okay. Potent

rabidreject

Also, every time you say ‘Mr Man’, I can’t stop thinking of the Mr Men series of kids books. Mr Tickle, Mr Happy and Mr Prohibitionist. Sounds like a new book someone needs to write for kiddies!!

rabidreject

I hate to say it Hamilton, but I actually do think you are addicted to work… I love your podcast and all the coverage of this important issue, however, NOT at the expense of your health! Honestly, your lack of sleep reminds me of my drug addiction when I was bad. Look after yourself!

rabidreject

I fucken love u Hammie. I will listen to u talk about anything. Gobbless u

Brad

If anyone had told me that a daily dispatch from a hearing about two obscure psychedelics would have me on the edge of my seat I would have scoffed. And yet! The fact that this is about so much more than these two drugs is truly exciting. And your portrayal of a man who is actually named Mr Mann is so representative of the crazy world we live in. Honestly I hope that your feelings about the sympathy and intelligence of the judge are warranted.

Phil Oad

Resubscribed for these - thanks so much for taking the time to report from the courtroom. It’s been eye opening

Dean Keinan

....and "DOI is a gateway drug to science..." Say what?? OMG, Mr Mann was the perfect villain in this passion play....

Steven

What an odd adventure! Yes, sleep dep or insomnia is a nightmare (a waking one at that ..). I had it so bad years ago after using etazolam a little too steadily....it took me months to get back to normal ... So what's new in the DR? Ellos hablan español, lo sé.... When I was a kid I had both DOB and DOM, and years later 2-CI. Much later the NBOMe versions were available,, I bought 2-CI, 2-CCl and 2-CBNBOMe. From those, I concluded that the worst of them were the iodo compounds - they simply felt less comfortable, more high energy. Except for the long duration of action, DOM and DOB were interesting, but best to keep the dose down IMHO. This goes for the NBOMes as well. As far as the latter go, the bromo and chloro were indeed quite pleasant, especially the 2-CB analog. I'd love to try the NBOMe version of bromofly, because the latter is by far the smoothest 2-CB analog of any I've tried si far. (Hamliton knows I agree with him on the utility of the NBOMe compounds with the exception of the iodo homolog - it just feels uncomfortable, like it's parent compound 2-CI.). Finally, I got to read the Microgram Bulletins up to about 2000, and they were quite entertaining. Some of the old ones were available online up until a few years ago - after that they were all removed.

Steven

H, Well, first and foremost . . . just . . . Thank you for the effort, the sacrifice and reporting. And please post here in advance of these hearings so others can attend. I guess there are notifications but it doesn't get much attention. IDK where to look. Not finished yet with episode 5 but had to jump in just now. One of your most profound statements some time ago that deserves recognition has been (paraphrased): "The true danger of psychedelics (and possibly all non-legal drugs) is law enforcement". Let your mind try to comprehend that one for a while. I mention that because the part re dangers of social media posting under the influence is seems to be of a corollary to that truth.

david

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting Dr. Mario de la Fuente to pop up! He obtained his PhD with my current PhD supervisor

Was listening to this in the gym and bust out laughing at the Mr Mann "OBJECTION!"s

I love your sense of humour. How you emphasize and describe in detail the mundane always brings out a chuckle from me.

I'm only 5 minutes into this thing, but Hamilton, I'm sending you hugs my dude. We love you. Get some fucking sleep lol

Dylan

Does the DEA scheduling process actually adhere to British common law? Like would the inclusion of research harms in this trial serve as legal precedent for future scheduling hearings?

Ledoux

I was just walking my dog while listening to this, and when Hamilton was talking about the Dr. Pepper phenomenon, I happened to see an empty bottle of Dr. Pepper laying on the ground… made me chuckle

Jim See

How are you writing this much at a speaking pace? Are you using your own kind of shorthand?
