See Gartz1989 for a peer reviewed paper by someone who seems to have done it. Though, physical proof no longer remains or, has been found of the work. Trout say that PF-EU, and another attempted to investigate with experimentation, both being abandoned for lack of proper analytical capability. I try to avoid asking objects for answers, or accepting answer-ish reply’s when not accompanied by evidence or source.

Ps. cyanescens, Ps. ovoideocystidiata, Ps. allenii grow in that area outdoors. Spore print to agar, select healthy growth over a couple transfers, take that to grain, grain to wood chips, then distribute wood chips in large wood chip piles. From what I've read this is a long term project, where you might not get patches to fruit for 1-2 years. There is some debate about whether it is best to spawn in spring or fall. If I was there, I would be trying everything, spawning multiple patches in both spring and fall, and looking at the next year for results. Greenhouses will allow you to grow other species. I've had Ps. cubensis, Ps. mexicana and Paneoulus cyanescens fruit outdoors here in Colorado, but they won't overwinter and the dryness of climate is a real headache. I had to make bug/mice cages, and water frequently, for me the effort didn't pan out to better yields or anything special, other than the "cool" factor of having both indoor and outdoor fruits. As for enzymatic breakdown, I would figure that you can't "overclock" the enzymes or organism, meaning that it will breakdown and use what it needs to its maximum potential, but any excess will be ignored. There is probably an upper limit to the quantity of alkaloids that the fungus will produce. In shoeboxes I can get a quick oz of cubensis at 5.0mg/g actives, with a little bit more work and time I can get an oz of Ps. mexicana with 12-15.0mg/g. GordoTEK's TTBVI Paneolus is testing at ~45.0mg/g, but I am not able to get the same yields with Paneolus. You can also just eat (or make tea) more of lower potency. 6 grams of 5.0mg/g cubensis is the same as 0.66 grams of TTBVI at 45mg/g.

B-Boy Bungus

Thank you for all of this. So curious. The complexity of it all. Where does the enzymatic breakdown stop, and the building begin? Maybe a supplementation of pure indole? Or pinoline from a pictet-Spenglered double reduction gone wrong 😁 Tell me bungus, do you know of any strains one might innoculate a garden patch in NorCal wine country with for the best chance of a successful outdoor/greenhouse grow?

Pvt. Idaho

I think Workman on the last podcast talked about how, unlike plants, mushrooms just rip apart everything, so you can't get them to uptake dye to color them like roses. Lots of mushrooms use enzymes to breakdown external material before uptaking it. I sort of assume they will just break everything down, and it won't get past that initial enzymatic digestion. I think the Gartz (?) paper on tryptamine supplemented substrates wasn't ever replicated and has been questioned ever since. There is a HPLC testing place here in Denver that did the last Colorado Cup and had 500+ submissions and showed with their data that gypsum/manure supplemented samples skewed slightly more potent, but minimally. I did an experiment and ran the same PE culture in 2 mono's with exact same conditions & substrate, except one I supplemented with 1/2 cup of horse manure. Manure tub yielded ~15% less, and HPLC tested measurably less potent as well. Granted that is a single amateur experiment. I lean towards light supplementation now, I figure, if plain coir or my grain lacks some mineral content or specific nutrients, light supplementation may help, but I'm not expecting large jumps in potency. Same reason I use a mix of grains; WBS, rye and popcorn for a bigger nutrient profile. But the difference in yield and potency is probably not important for a large scale grower.

B-Boy Bungus

Okay I've been dying to ask this and have exhausted AI Google as a resource: Please humor me somebody... So, the whole church of Psilomethoxin thing notwithstanding, are there any actual examples of people juicing their substrates with tryptamines or whatever else, whether or not the results produced novel compounds? It all seems so abstract and hand wavy at this point, but then you hear about somebody who put vanilla extract into their substrate for a flavored mushroom and while I imagine that's more of a psychosomatic thing, or traces of residue on the surface at best, one wonders if an innoculation of, say, synthetic psilosin into their substrate might if nothing else produce some extra potent goomies? Anybody? Philosophy Stoogensis over here throw me a jealous bone with an albino cap!

Such a good interview, i hope all these guys go down in history. Truly a unique moment in history where all these brilliant people could coexist.

Just wanted to mention that UNC Street Drug lab does testing for free. It's qualitative only, so it's not going to tell you the doses, but it will tell you if there are any compounds in there you're not expecting. The one catch is that individuals cannot send in samples. Pretty sure this is for legal reasons. Samples must be submitted by a harm reduction organization or something like that. The NC Harm Reduction Coalition can send samples, but any local harm reduction organization should be able to request free kits and send them in for you. It's run by an amazing team of people who are real harm reduction advocates. Check out the website blog https://www.streetsafe.supply/

Hamilton interviewed Ott in 2021. It's here on his patreon just have to scroll down :) I did leave a comment about a week and a half ago asking if he'd possibly release the rest of the interview. It's a great one as well!

Oral tobacco is considered "toxic" or "poisonous" for two reasons. The first reason is you are able to consume a lot more Nicotine orally then if its smoked. Nicotine while is hardly toxic when smoked, if you are eating tobacco a toxic dose can be achieved. The second reason is that tobacco is quiet irritating. Oral use can cause nausea, vomitting, and other gastrointestinal issues.

Sean Qualischefski

from wiki: In humans, tellurium is partly metabolized into dimethyl telluride, (CH3)2Te, a gas with a garlic-like odor exhaled in the breath of victims of tellurium exposure or poisoning.

Simon

What you on about smelling of garlic? Is that a side effect of Tellurium chemistry?

Andrew Mackney

Unrelated, but, is there anything that makes nicotine/tobacco poisonous when swalled, such as if i were to brew tobacco tea? Lots of people say its poisonous but i cant find any good sources. I read that nornicotine can reach with stomach acid to form n-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), but i also read that burning tobacco increases NNN levels more than with oral absorption.

Helmer

Thanks for the great interview with such a legendary figure! I'm a big fan of Kava (probably my favorite psychoactive substance for casual use) and love JB's take on it. Would be great to listen to an interview with a kava expert. JP1021 on the kava subreddit is one of the most knowledgeable people on the science of kava (an amateur enthusiast that works a day job as a refrigeration tech) and I'll bet he'd be down for an interview. Such an underrated substance outside of the South Pacific. It's getting more and more attention in alcohol-alternative beverages and the health-conscious scene, though these usually use an extract which doesn't hit quite like the real thing traditionally prepared.

Hank

I don’t think moclobemide was ever approved in the US. It certainly could be taken at the same time as DMT but I see no reason as it will almost certainly be less efficient and introduce an unnecessary source of variation in response. I have taken 300mg moclobemide one hour before smoking DMT on at least one (maybe two) occasions and it causes the smoked DMT to last an hour. I spoke in tongues and had profoundly intense open eye hallucinations.

Hamilton Morris

That's so awesome to hear someone else has had a similar experience with pharmahuasca where Harmaline is preferred over harmine. These last few times I've done it I've been using harmine and have had pretty uncomfortable experiences but didn't know why, will definitely be picking up some Harmaline to try it with.

https://www.cannabisculture.com/content/2002/11/04/2654/ Ian Hunter remembered

Oops! No recreational use of nearly _any_ drug is illegal in BC.

Clam_Baker

In Victoria BC ~1996 a neo-religious movement was organized and ministered to by Ian Hunter. He brought a case to BC Supreme Court arguing for legitimacy of group ritualistic cannabis smoking circles in Beacon Hill Park. I served a limited advisory role as to harmonizing non-indigenous spiritual/religious rights and regulation to the emerging common use of pot for (at least) social bonding. His case was lost at the last moment by his answer to a question from the bench as to whether the 'sacramental" group use of sactified marijaun a was "required" for full communion with with his ministry. Libertarian, free- will absolutist Ian asserted that No, there is no compulsion in religion. Oops! I felt like Fauci at a Trump CoVid news briefing. Darn it, Ian! No essential sacrament> no religio-legal protections ( under Canadian law.) for that substance. Oh well. This failed project of the Church of the Tree of Life (Rev. Damuzzi, et.al). extinguished long before the medical use>recreational legalization. Currently no personal consumption, sharing, or possession of practically _any_ drug is tolerated in British Columbia.

Clam_Baker

Pharmahuasca - I'm so glad you mentioned this. You, HM, are the only person I've heard tout the utility of the (US) abandoned antidepressant MAOI, meclobemide. It is available in Canada from a pharmacy with a prescription and they will accept that from a US medical doctor to a US address. It's just not available from US pharmacies only due to its dwindling use in this country over the years. It is absent on three EHR drug databases I searched. On further search, it looks like maybe we just never did the clinical trials for meclobemide in the US and it was never on US formulary. It's available in 150 mg tablets as the freebase (rather unusual). BTW, the HCl salt is not water soluble. To recap your assessment mostly from another podcast: 300 mg oral meclobemide Synthetic oral DMT one hr later 25 mg - very interesting - definitely the aya and DMT effect 50 mg - some would consider this a full experience 75 mg - total deconstruction of your reality - best to have some facilitation Advantages - far less nausea, shorter duration than traditional aya Prompt and predictable on and offset duration 90-120 minutes meclobemide, the MAOI component is of the reversible sort and far cleaner drug, itself with little perceptible cognitive effect Other thoughts. Could meclobemide be dosed at the same time as the synthetic DMT for the pharmahuasca experience? Earlier dosing does make sense. But since DMT is cheap and plentiful, what then, if any is the increased dose, for simultaneous dosing for the same or preferred effect. What effect, if any, does meclobemide orally have on 'smoked' DMT? Smoked DMT is visually a wild ride indeed but lacking, it seems in some of the spiritual aspect (connection with nature, heart opening, oneness) of the oral / aya experience. Changa, BTW, is a smoked combination of DMT mixed with plant MAOI harmaloid alkaloids and sometimes other herbals. Meclobemide BP is around 450C, higher than harmaline around 350C, DMT 160C, BTW. IDK how changa rates on the spirituality scale with respect to traditional aya and smoked DMT

Thanks! 🥂

That's awesome I've had a similar strategy when making edibles but I never actually tested anything I just knew it was at least more consistent than random whole fruits

Thomas

I homogenize batches (coffee grinder), then do two HPLC tests per batch and average the results. There's still some variation, but much more consistent. I recently tested batches stored for 1 year in normal (mason jar on shelf) conditions, finely ground and in capsules lost the least % of actives.

B-Boy Bungus

I grew my own MG and HBWR for years and there was a huge difference between fresh off the vine seeds and even some that were just a few months old. And yes, personal pharmacology has to play a role, I probably had a more visual experience than some of the real hard heads and they just felt the body load and purge.

They are in the notes

Meek

Yea I wondered about the name of the book. No shame if he made the mistake . In an interview he also mispronounces isosafrole which is kinda funny. But good material nonetheless

M

I can’t begin to understand how you could take ayahuasca in the park like it was a fun day out, let alone double dosing - maybe those three days made it incredibly weak? My experience of ayahuasca with the Huni Kuin was not being able to think about anything but the madness, let alone move, let alone sit up to vomit, let alone have a jolly old time in a park ahah Great interview, love hearing stories from the old school hippies, and legends like JB!

Meek

I did see that he titled the book after "the weight of an MDA capsule" but it should've been "85 Milligrams" then. One of those little things I'll never be able to forgive. Still gonna order it though, I love these kinds of books.

B-Boy Bungus

"How To Rob A Bank", it only mentions a little about the dude's drug business etc, but an entertaining watch nonetheless.

Hey! Leave astrophysics out of this! 😆

M

It's because some of the seeds out there are boof. And most people got minimal effects. It may have to do with natural variance in potency or individual pharmacology

M

Looked into art Williams case. Thanks for the tip

M

Then you started boofing boofetamine and never looked back?

Great interview with the great Jeremy Bigwood! Interesting hearing him tell these stories on many of these other pioneers. It was also cool hearing about his brief synthesizing of MDMA, "lots of cutting of foil" 😂 will you ever release the rest of Otts interview you did in 2021 by any chance Hamilton? Or possibly the book on Pollock? Anywho, keep at it!

CosmicCamote

The seeds. Here's how I would prepare them: 1) Fry the seeds in a pan on very low heat (no oil or anything) until the seeds crack. (I have no idea if this step is even necessary but I read it online somewhere) 2) Grind the seeds in a coffee grinder. Not so fine that it's a powder, just into small particles. 3) Using a bong, put a small piece of chamomile tea (or anything else that would fit) into the bowlpiece hole (so the seed particles don't fall through the bowlpiece). 4) Smoke as many bowls of this as you can until you are astrophysically unable to load another bowl 5) Lay down and do not move during the experience. Moving at all would cause nausea for me.

Armchair Idiot

Nice one! Loving the mushroom pods, just like last year when foraging season hit we got like 4 mushroom pods. Thanks for your hard work!

Enchanted FX

You smoked the seeds or an extract?

Enchanted FX

What an interesting fellow JB is… with some fascinating nuggets of behind-the-scenes info about some of the big names in this scene - could easily have run twice as long!

nickbaba

I have 100% tripped on HBWR seeds. I would definitely agree it is quite sedating but I did get fractals and trails and heightened colours. The main issue for me was muscle cramps and a huge amount of nausea at doses high enough to see full on trails etc. when I had NO access at all to any other psychedelics it sort of worked - then I found out about the RC scene and switched mainly to 2c-e! Lol

rabidreject

It's such a crazy coincidence that he releases 2 mushroom related interviews right when I start getting in to mycology again.

Bushy Haired Stranger

I always find it strange when people discount the natural Lysergamides. I've had easily some of the most intense and hallucinatory experiences on fresh picked HBWR seeds. The seeds do cause an intense body load and nausea similar Peyote/San Pedro and Ayahuasca. I've had trips on fresh MG/HBWR seeds that rival some of my strongest Psilocybin and LSD experiences, just with less OEVs and more CEVs

Chris DeLuague

Interesting to hear him talk about potency of mushrooms varying so much between flushes that they aren't reliable for research purposes vs. The synthetic version or an extract

Thomas

"There was this crazy flower that was full of amazing alkaloids but it also gives u cancer soooo we didn't wanna use that one"
