POD 103: A live interview with underground psychedelic chemist Steve Gill

Recorded before a live audience at the Discovery Sessions event in San Francisco, this conversation with underground chemist Steve Gill covers his syntheses of MDA, MDMA, etonitazene, PCP, TCP, nitroglycerine, and more! A multi-camera video recording of this conversation is being edited for release in the coming days. Enjoy!

We will get it as soon as we get the Pickard interview 🙏

Steve "So anyways" Gill

Siwanand Das

Yes that would be lovely! Must be amazing being able to order from direct chem suppliers!!!

rabidreject

Cough (BBGATE.COM) cough!! Don’t everyone flood it for reagents though please! 🤣

rabidreject

What about the digitized lab Notebook?

GTS

VR, yes, agree. You will like HM’s comment re my comment in POD 104 re potential for distillate rapid decomposition (aka explosion) with breaking the vacuum or even just reaching a certain point in the distillation with certain compounds. Also see his newly attached document of commentaries on the particular distillation that is referenced.

Steve, do you publish/post anything chemistry related online? It'd be great to hear more stories and misadventures from the trenches 😊 along with your indispensible knowledge of synthetic chemistry. I'm sure Hamilton would agree that it would be a great loss to chemistry and human story telling if all your experience refluxing around in your mind was evaporated into the ether

V R

I love learning about practical tips and tricks for organic synthesis, "survival guide" style. Can you recommend any off the top of your head? It's a shame more labs don't publish theirs, you have to work there to learn them

V R

what a lovely fellow, this was an absolute delight to listen to

Anil

Fantastic conversation, this needs to be turned into a legendary book one day. Love Steve and love science. Infinite thanks to you Hamilton 🔥🔥

Please do more interviews with this man. What a phenomenal life's work

Oli

Fascinating and wonderful - only wish it had been longer. Please do another ep with Steve!

Re mineral oil and LAH, realistically it's not something I can imagine myself doing under most circumstances, but I like the idea. Depending on the compound, the workup might not be altered but in some instances it's not ideal. I've had to wash the mineral oil off of NaH before using it because the product of the rxn didn't have any readily-ionizable atoms and so the mineral oil would have become an impurity. I recently used LAH pellets for the first time after many years of only using the powder, that seems like a decent compromise that reduces surface area and reactivity during handling without introducing hydrocarbons that need to be removed.

I was referring to the chemiluminescent compound diphenyl oxalate aka "Cyalume" not the opioid diphenoxylate, similar names but very different chemicals!

Hamilton Morris

TY for sharing this, HM. Diphenoxylate is mentioned re oxalyl chloride. Please share if you have that info on synth. Diphenoxylate ranks with pethidine for it's abatement of IBS symptomatology being equipotent while exhibiting far less potential for 'misuse' at higher doses - less euphoric 'buzz'. Sadly diphenoxylate 2.5 mg tablet is 'poisoned' with atropine (AKA Lomotil) and as many know takes around 8 to 16 tablets for the effective oral dose at which the atropine 'poisoning' kicks in. Parenteral dosing of around 25 mg of the above opiates is phenomenal for stemming the hyperactive bowel and is not much perceptible nor does it induce a tolerance for it's GI effects. Sadly again, diphenoxylate is completely unavailable to compounding pharmacies as the unadulterated opiate and would be Schedule II. Mechlorethamine plus benzyl cyanide is the basic path to pethidine. Diphenoxylate would seem a bit more complex as it is chemically peth with a (big) twist on the piperidine. Looking forward to the video and any other interviews with this gentleman of clandestine chemistry history. HM, can you share any insight on mixing LiAlH4 with mineral oil - genius idea perhaps. I bet it might not complicate the w/u too much. Can you comment on this aspect? Many thanks again for sharing Steve - another winner of a podcast.

david

Thank you for sharing such fascinating tales Steve, I hope this was the first of many interviews, and that the psychedelic community finally will start giving you the recognition you deserve!

Alex Deleeck

I could listen to him for days in a row

Austin T.

Excellent interview

Austin T.

The people are asking for a longer interview with you, we’ll have to do this again!

Hamilton Morris

Hamilton your MDxx chemist interviews are always the best! Hopefully the LSD chemists are the same.

zealot

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this interview. Steve is fantastic. I can’t wait to see the video of this.

Jeff gorski

Best part of this interview is hearing Steve sound so upbeat and happy 😊

Tom Suazo

I love when Steve talks! He’s filled with so much wisdom and stories. It’s a shame it only lasted 1hour and 30mins, I wish it was longer

Knot_ Monkey

The company called Liquid Light Lab that sells materials for making liquid light shows, have nothing to do with this guy right? They just have the same name?

Chillpad

Thanks for being alive and doing what you do, Hamilton. You're a good human.

Dylan

My sincere thanks to Hamilton, Zion who gave me a ride to the city, and the whole crew at Discovery - what a delightful venue. Cheers everyone!

Steven

Wow, beautiful. One of those people that needs an infinite speech time

Austin T.

I remember in the episode of pharmacopeia with Steve, he seems really bitter and pessimistic. It's sweet to hear how positive and funny he sounds in this podcast

Tate Sayre

Looking forward to the video of this, particularly since Steven’s audio goes in & out a bit. Steven mentions the synthesis of the reverse ester of meperidine here, the hazards of the potential synthesis of the MPTP neurotoxin side product, and the case of the frozen addicts/Barry Kidston. For that full story listen to Hamilton’s POD 96! A bit of shameless self-promotion I know, but a little cross-reference seems like it might be helpful here!

Jason

I could listen to Steve for hours!

Siwanand Das

He does come across more humble in this interview. I remember being a bit heart broken watching the episode of the show, where Hamilton kinda just shows up at his house. The struggle of making things makes sense after getting busted and feeling like it was all waste just touched something in me. Truly amazing story. I hope we hear more from Steve!

Siwanand Das

What a phenomenal man! I think I speak for all patrons when I say we would definitely be down for a round 2 with Steve in the future :) Such a fountain of interesting stories and tales from the underground that enabled so many of us to have an ecstatic experience. You're an icon Steve, Thanks you

Alex Deleeck

I wish this podcast was longer

Jonathan Swartz

Thank you Hamilton! I love listening your podcasts!

Monica Mendez

Oh hell yes! I’ve been waiting for this one! Thanks brother 🌵🙏☺️

Tom Suazo

Love Steve! Thanks Hamilton 🙏

Sid Edwards

Maybe humble is a better word

M

I love this guy. He's so passionate and self deprecating. I just want to give him and hug and say thank you. I truly hope Steve is doing well💚

Siwanand Das

The serendipity of this is amazing to me, I was just thinking about Steven yesterday and wondering if I’ll ever get to read his book, and overnight this pops up! Thank you Hamilton and Steven for this amazing interview, your life story and experiences are so valuable to us all.

Jason

Slightly concerned about the animals in the back yard. Interesting days, society has changed - for the better and worse. Thank you Hamilton, listening to these stories is safer than re-experiencing them.

km

It was super rad witnessing this interview in person with my bestfriends. Experiencing this storytime moment was lovely. Learning more about Steve's life experiences and having it all be so close to home is surreal in the best way😸✨️✨️✨️

Lightfaeee

Hamilton its 3rd year I've been following this patreon and you've made my birthday even better. love from NZ as always

Eban (Sully)

Was great to see this in person. Steve is such a character and his stories are wild. It was so strange to hear how all of this went down just a few miles from where I grew up. It really was the wild west.

Brian

Finally! Let's cross fingers that he allows his notebook to be uploaded!

p4nix

Can't wait!

Oh snap Steve Gill the legend himself
