POD 86: Go, pigeons, and LSD with Amanda Feilding
Added 2023-09-18 05:41:32 +0000 UTCIn this second interview with Amanda Feilding we discuss the board game go as a tool for psychopharmacological research, her plot to find her lost pigeon by claiming he was the star of an upcoming Antonioni film, and the default mode network as a metaphor for prohibitionist government.

Love the chess attachment, I think it really encapsulates the use of stimulants as a whole. The higher the stimulation, the better moves were made but ultimately ended up losing on time for all cases

2024-03-26 12:51:55 +0000 UTCI’m having a “discussion” with a random person of facebook about where lsd comes from. He is insisting that lsd is extracted directly from ergot and thus a completely naturally occurring chemical. I’ve tried explaining that it is derived from lysergic acid in a lab and is entirely synthetic. Am I missing something?

2024-03-23 03:11:30 +0000 UTCThere are people studying telepathy through scientific methods. I think the most famous setup is where the a pair of participants are given deck of cards. The cards have simple line pictures of geometric forms on them. Normal communication is prevented between participants, for example by placing them in different rooms where they are supervised through the experiment. One of the participant looks at a random card; the other tries to guess what picture s/he is looking at is. This is repeated maaaaany times and with different people to collect large pool of data; upon which statistical analysis is performed to find out whether participants got better results than what was to be expected based on pure chance alone. I think the typical overall result from this kind of research are not very much above the chance expectation. Obviously this is not really popular topic within mainstream scienctific research... I once attended spirituality/New Age event where they had introductory lecture on parapsychology research, that's where most of my little knowledge comes from. A detail that stuck with me from that lecture was that if a participant pair shared a bond of love, their telepathy results were many times better (8x if I remember correctly) than the results randomly assigned pairs got.

2023-09-23 23:53:20 +0000 UTCThanks Hamilton for the interview. I have one question: At the beginning you mention the conference “Psychedelic Molecules” in the Czech Republic you’ve visited. Do you know if it will take place again next year and where I can find some information on that?
