Do you print out our maps or use them with a VTT?
Added 2019-04-01 18:20:44 +0000 UTCTime for another community poll! We've had a lot of questions over the last few weeks about using our maps and if people print them or use them digitally. So we thought we'd ask!
We've had a lot of Americans ask us about where to go to get them printed but we're over here in Europe and have no clue, so if you have some suggestions share them in the comments!
If you use a virtual tabletop (VTT), let us know which. :)
We were sent the photo below by the awesome Thibaut, showing off how they print out the maps. If you have photos or screenshots, email them to us at czepeku@gmail.com. It'd be great to share different setups with the community.

Sounds awesome, I love when devs actually respond to requests and feedback like that.

2019-04-10 15:23:46 +0000 UTCArkenforge VTT because the progress on it is amazing. I've had patches specifically for things that I've asked for within hours, and it loads video (dynamic dungeons etc) maps and is getting patched very regularly and I dont have to have a subscription with it.

2019-04-06 04:33:01 +0000 UTCHey Fritz, why Infinitas DM? I think you're the only one to give that as an answer, would love to know why. I hadn't even heard of it before. There's so many up and coming VTTs with new features recently.

2019-04-02 23:11:11 +0000 UTCOh cool! You should send some photos. I'd love to see how it turned out. Do you have a gaming room specifically for it?

2019-04-02 23:10:05 +0000 UTCHaving the physical maps printed out with real models is a lot of fun. I really enjoy the haptic sensation of moving figurines around, but it does require a lot more work and set up. Much easier using laptops when everyone's got one.

2019-04-02 23:09:35 +0000 UTCAnd they look great! Thanks again for the photos.

2019-04-02 23:08:15 +0000 UTCHow many games are you in right now? For the IRL games do you have a TV you gather around? I'm still in the paper and pens age of gaming it seems...

2019-04-02 23:07:59 +0000 UTCI'm really glad I asked this question, I hadn't heard of MapTool before but it seems like a great alternative.

2019-04-02 23:07:04 +0000 UTCHorizontal TV? Did you make one of those gaming tables with the sunken screen?

2019-04-02 23:06:31 +0000 UTCThe VTT/TV mix seems like it is getting really popular. Do you connect it up to a tablet/laptop for each player or do you have all the control as DM?

2019-04-02 23:06:06 +0000 UTCThat's creative and you're right, it sounds a lot cheaper. If anyone asks for a cheap solution I'll send them this idea, thanks James.

2019-04-02 23:02:49 +0000 UTCGlad you're sticking to traditional means, you're right, I think children respond to that a lot better. I miss playing with my HeroQuest board and figures as a kid. Just having the physical, tangible paper and cardboard set up made it way cooler. What campaign are you running for them?

2019-04-02 22:59:34 +0000 UTCThat's a pretty unique solution. Do you screenshare and just paint over the maps as you go? If so that's really cool, much looser and creative than using a VTT itself.

2019-04-02 22:56:02 +0000 UTCHow is Maptool? Do the maps work well on it? I hear a lot of Roll20/FG complaints, not heard much about Maptool.

2019-04-02 22:54:24 +0000 UTCHow's Astral Tabletop? I've not even heard of it before. Do the maps work fine with it? I should check it out.

2019-04-02 22:49:34 +0000 UTCThanks Forrest, that's a great idea, I'll suggest that when people ask in future. Libraries are great for that sort of thing, there's usually one in most towns.

2019-04-02 22:48:59 +0000 UTCAnother patron, he posted above. Awesome because he was the first to respond to our request for map photos. Was very happy to see our maps in use for the first time. I'd love to see more home setups, so if you ever get any time to take in-game shots, send them our way. :)

2019-04-02 11:42:46 +0000 UTCI'm printing on a professional Large Format Printer on thick paper. My university offers this for students at very nice prices. Under 2 $ a map. I'd recommend for others to check their local universities and libraries for similar services. Could be way cheaper than a print shop and the quality is so much better than a home printer.

2019-04-02 08:29:43 +0000 UTCBeen using Astral TableTop primarily. I LOVE your maps!
2019-04-02 02:52:35 +0000 UTCI use Maptool for VTT for my sessions
2019-04-01 21:18:25 +0000 UTCMy party play over skype. When I DM I use photoshop to manipulate my maps. (Cause I'm a zelot and refuse to upgrade).

2019-04-01 19:58:37 +0000 UTCI've used a VTT on occasion, but my easily distracted younger children are better drawn in by having something physical. I tend to use a mix of paper miniatures from various sources along with a Poster printout of whatever map I'm using.
2019-04-01 19:54:38 +0000 UTCI print all maps for my home game using the Poster setting in Adobe Acrobat, which tile prints a large image across multiple letter-sized pages. I usually print at around 90% size, doesn't shrink the grid noticeably, but does usually save a few pages. Then I just use a paper trimmer to take off the borders and Scotch tape the sheets together. It's not as pretty as a single large-format print, but it's a LOT cheaper and quicker than going to a print shop.
2019-04-01 19:29:44 +0000 UTCVTT for displaying on a Tv during in person games, using Roll20 and Dynamic Dungeons player

2019-04-01 19:12:12 +0000 UTCI don't use a VTT so much as I display them on a horizontal 55" television and march the minis around on top of it. Still digital though.
Devin Brown
2019-04-01 19:07:33 +0000 UTCI use MapTool as a VTT.
2019-04-01 18:43:08 +0000 UTCI use a VTT for both my online and IRL games.

2019-04-01 18:41:51 +0000 UTCPrinted for home usage :P

2019-04-01 18:27:35 +0000 UTCI play exclusively with Roll20, set it up in the living room on a big TV with a laptop as my "GM screen". That being said, I'd very much like to be able to print the maps at some point and play D&D that way.
2019-04-01 18:27:22 +0000 UTCI literally spent the weekend sawing a hole in my kitchen table so I could mount a TV underneath for VTT :P
