Would you join our Discord server?
Added 2019-03-25 11:43:57 +0000 UTCThanks to everyone who answered the last community poll. So many 5e players!
We've been asked by several patrons if we could start a Discord server and we'd like to get more community feedback on that idea.
I'll be frank, neither me nor Peku are very fond of chatting over a microphone. It might happen! But we would rather chill in the server rooms and type away with you all.
We'd like to set up rooms so that people can role-play online, maybe through FG or Roll20. That way the community can get to know one another better and play games together.
Of course there'd be general chitchat, RPG talk and all that sort of thing too but it'd be awesome to bring together people for actual games (at least you'd all have maps and tokens you could use!).
We also want to give everyone ranks based on their support here. Maybe even server nicknames based on community activity.
Here are some questions/queries we've got, if you have thoughts on any of them, discuss below:
Should it be open to the public or patrons only?
Are there any room ideas you'd like to see?
Or any events we could run over the Discord you'd be interested in?
Would you be interested in being a moderator?
If you're actively part of any Discord servers, what are they?
If you respond to the poll with 'Yes, if...' please let us know what it is you'd like to see on the Discord in the comments below. For anyone not aware of Discord, you can learn about it here. The poll will be up until Thursday but if you see this too late and want to give us your input you can always message us.

Yes. I've been wanting to start a campaign based on Sandy's 5e Lovecraft rules. Maybe mid summer.

2019-03-27 19:55:13 +0000 UTCHey Don, I think i'll go for patrons-only, you're right about the moderation, I would like to keep the community small, I think that'll make it a lot easier to stay orderly. I'd like it if the Discord was pretty self-sufficient, taking time out of map making for moderation is a red flag for sure. Would you be interested in playing/running games with the community here if we set up rooms for it? Connect it up with the maps and Roll20?

2019-03-27 00:20:01 +0000 UTCHey Daniel, I'll add rooms for that, sounds like my cup of tea. Brainstorming with other DMs is always a ton of fun. There's a lot of great information out there to share.

2019-03-27 00:17:48 +0000 UTCHey Jessie, happy to know you'll be on board. I'll add rooms for those sorts of discussions to the server for sure. It'd be fun coming up with community encounter sheets for each of the maps.

2019-03-27 00:16:58 +0000 UTCI am concerned that having the Discord open would require a lot more moderation but you're right, it'd be nice to let people have a sneak peak before committing too. Although I think most people will be joining for the maps anyway and the Discord is just a bonus. The ask us anything event sounds like fun, I'd sure be up for answering questions from the community. :)

2019-03-27 00:04:24 +0000 UTCHey, glad you'd join in. I'll definitely take you up on being a moderator. Thanks for that. I'll send you message about setting up the server if I need help. It seems like being patron-only is the popular option. I'm happy with that, it'd be easier to moderate too.

2019-03-27 00:02:13 +0000 UTCGreat to hear you'd join in Jenny. Oneshots are a great idea. Maybe we could organize game nights for that sort of thing. I'd certainly enjoy putting together campaign notes for some oneshots using our maps. Running our own games in a nice idea too, maybe once we're caught up on all our patreon goals. :) Patron-only seems to be the crowd favourite, I think that's a good idea too, makes it more like a community that way and easier to moderate. Thanks for the feedback!

2019-03-26 23:59:30 +0000 UTCThanks for the feedback Brandon, that sounds like a great idea, it'd be a lot of fun seeing patrons swap ideas for the maps. Collaborative efforts make DMing way easier.

2019-03-26 23:55:18 +0000 UTCI used Discord for Delta Green (N@tO). I'm also subscribed to the CoC server. It is a nice platform to run games, especially when Roll20 is added for visual aids. My observation is that it requires a lot of moderation. Just be aware of that. I'd suggest starting with only Patreons involved. When that seems to be working, allow others by invite. As in most of life, a few bad actors can ruin the whole thing for everyone. That's roughly how the N@tO server runs.

2019-03-25 19:24:47 +0000 UTCI've gotten really into using RPG Discord servers to bounce ideas off of and brainstorm adventure ideas and world-building, so I would happily join another if there were rooms for stuff like that.

2019-03-25 14:49:25 +0000 UTCI wouldn't likely be interested in any sort of RP, but I would be interested in having discussions about encounter ideas based on the maps. I would also enjoy having back and forths with members of the community about what we would like to see in the maps (features, variants, etc).

2019-03-25 13:54:26 +0000 UTCI would join, would like it if it was open, that way new people can sniff around to see if it is for them. On the other hand, you will have to appoint moderators to keep order, so keep that in mind. I would love to have events where you just do ask us anything cause I'm sure there's 101 things people would like to know that I haven't even thought of yet that I would also be interested in. I am part of Tetcher's channel he used to be a Heroes of the Storm caster but since that is now sort of dwindling he has a D&D show on Monday night on Twitch - it's just started out but it's actually a lot of fun for those interested!

2019-03-25 13:29:57 +0000 UTCI would definitely join! I believe with as many patrons that are here we could make the server for patrons only. But I wouldn't say that should be a necessity, if enough people think it would benefit to be open to the public then it should be. Like Brandon has said, a channel for discussing how to include your maps in their campaigns would be an amazing addition to the server. I would definitely be open to being a moderator, maybe help out with setting up the server if you need help with that. I use discord mainly to socialise with friends. But mostly I sit in a discord that I play a campaign of 5e in. But I also do have my own servers that I run and am active in.
2019-03-25 11:53:50 +0000 UTCYes I'd love to join! It would be great to see people organise games as oneshots based on specific maps. I've never had a game go to the faewild, or a mountain top, and a long term campaign might be hard to manage. Oneshots tend to be easier to organise. I'm in discord groups for cosplay groups, fandoms, and another map patreon (Crossroads) but there's very little chat in that one apart from to ask how to use the maps. I would prefer if it was patrons only, but if it was open to the public/people who followed but didn't pledge, I'd like for there to be patron-only channels too. A game run by you guys could be a fun goal for once you reach $1,000 or something!
Jenn
2019-03-25 11:48:44 +0000 UTCI use Discord often. I'd definitely use a channel where people are discussing the maps you guys make, the ideas for how they'll include them in their games, etc. I think it would be a great source of inspiration.
