Making bulletproof wood

Hey guys!

I am still alive and trying to make videos! This one was actually something that I started years ago and I am very happy to finally be able to finish it.

I hope you enjoy it! Also, I am still planning on getting 2 more videos out this year.

Now for the sad part. Normally I try to get the patreon version up as early as possible. However this video took WAY longer than I expected to edit. I was planning to be done 2 weeks ago. So now I am obliged to post the public version today as well (due to a sponsor agreement that it must be post in October).

I am very sorry about this because posting the video at least 24h early is one of the few perks that I offer. So, if you do not want to fund this video because of that, I totally understand and there are no hard feelings at all.

To make it up though, I would like to do a live stream just for Patrons this Friday. I haven't done one in very long and I think it could be nice!

Great video. I was waiting for you to be a good scientist and show the result of shooting untreated wood. So thanks for including that at the end.

Max Goldstein

To be frank I paid for support not for the benefits. Rest assured that no hard feelings for what's happened.

Patrick Siu

Man I found it just because I love your content not for the benefits:)

Hi NileRed! As always, amazing video! I'm not sure how interested you'd be in redoing the experiment to try and achieve resistance to a higher caliber bullet, however, I still have a few ideas I thought I'd share in case you were interested. 1: Before treating the wood at all, drill multiple (very thin) holes into the end grain running through the entirety of the wood. This would (in theory) let the wood soak up as much of the chemicals as possible in the very center. The reason I say you should drill the holes in the end grain is because when crushing the wood those new cavities will likely collapse in on themselves following the other veins of the wood. 2: Let the wood cool down fully while still in the press. When wood heats up/cools down it loves to contract and expand. To mitigate that, keeping it under pressure until it's fully cooled down may help keep it from warping. 3: Use a harder/stronger wood. While Oak is already a hardwood, there are some woods that are hard or strong enough to make Oak look like playdough. For instance, Lignum Vitae aka "Ironwood" is roughly 3 to 4 times harder than English Oak. I don't know how much it may help in this case, but I figured a stronger starting material would lead to a stronger outcome. Anyways, those are just some ideas I thought I'd share. Keep up the great work!!

Now that not only does he have dangerous explosive chemicals, but also a hydraulic press and a gun, I worry about him 100 times more 😱 I wonder how much it would cost to build a house made of wood prepared this way. I'm also curious about flammability. Very good video, don't worry about the delay, just please don't die Nigel! I'm waiting for the next experiments that will end up in the hydraulic press.

Live stream sounds fun, I'd definitely tune in!

Jade

I don't care you've uploaded it a bit later, I'm happy to see another awesome video!

Monia Góralik

then perhaps another follow up with them and william osman where you strap two mp5s to two robot dogs and armor them with the wood and make them fight.

Oliver

you should collaborate with somebody like demo ranch or brandon herrera. definitely watch some videos of people screwing around with real and homemade body armor to get some background knowledge of how body armor works. i bet two of those wood pieces laminated with a piece of kevlar could make some commercially viable plate things, like something between a steel plate and straight up fabric. this definitely would benefit from a follow up.

Oliver

Yeah!

Chris WIRVIN

Man! A .22 LR is no joke. Remember that the 9mm will be going a lot faster out of that rifle barrel too....significantly faster. Really nice job man!

Chris WIRVIN

I think you might be able to make some good clickbait by quoting the price of the machine in the title, something like "I Spent $4,000 To make Bulletproof Wood."

Arthur Wesley

Amazing video! ❤️

I do have the means to ship to Canada, if you want me to see if I can send you some, have to be mindful of biosecurity restrictions

Paul Fisher

Turn the brown extract from the wood into artificial vanilla (or perhaps other phenolic materials)

Kevin Martin

Hey, thanks for pointing that out! Somehow a clip got dragged over in the editor..it will be fixed for the final release.

Nile Red

Nice video Nigel, but there is another species of wood just as cheap as pine, don't know if you can get it in North America (commonly available in Australia), but a timber called Meranti, has a tighter grain, and is just as cheap as pine

Paul Fisher

I wonder what would happen with a denser wood like ironwood or something. Also there is a strange silence at 53:31. Not really important but you could probably cut to the next clip in the yt editor easy enough if you don't want to re-export

Elijah Hoyt

Always happy to see an upload! I subbed because I wanted to support the fun, quality content that comes from your channel, regardless of whether I get the content earlier.

Katherine DelMonte

No Problem. We don't fund for the perks. We fund for you and Videos at all

Jan Krause

Don't worry about early access. I support you because of your videos, so the perks aren't that important to me. Looking forward to watching the new video later!

Maxr1998

Dont worry about it. Keep up the awesome work! Love your content! Many loves from Denmark.

Sebastian Siemer

If it is too much work to do separate videos, just make one, list it visible only through the link for 24hrs and post here

hlx

We don’t care about the 24h perk. We’re all happy that you’re alive and not killed by the paint thinner soda.

Galen Cheung

No worries. I/we are just glad to hear your allive and well. Always looking forward to your videos. It's quite funny that this one is on wood because I just re-watched your transparent wood revisit video again. Nice timing.

Emil Lund

Mate, we are happy that you do post, don't worry!
