Turning paint thinner into cherry soda
Added 2023-06-01 05:57:08 +0000 UTC
Hey guys, this is the first video in a while! I do plan to post more this year though and this will hopefully just be the first of many.
Also, I messed up and I planned to post this Friday, but I didn't realize that I had to post it Thursday (June 1) because of the sponsor. So, this will be the first video since I started this Patreon, that the video won't be here for at least 24h before going live.
I am really sorry about that.
On a more positive note though, I hope you guys like it!
Patreon is doing me bad I just joined so it gave me this notif and I got excited lol but Iβve already seen this video π

I just graduated with my MS in chemistry, with BA in biochemistry and BA in biomedical sciences. I need a job and would love to make videos with you. If you ever need help I'm happy to collaborate. Working with you would be an esoteric dream. Please, it would be better than going back to the QC pharmaceutical industry.

I also was thinking you could have gone about this through a different and safer synthesis route than using chromium, which has the plausibility of generating Cr(VI). After watching your video I couldn't sleep well as my brain kept imagining using an ozonolysis on a benzene alkene derivative from a peroxide primary induced brominated substitution. The only draw back would have been that you would generate formaldehyde from the ozonolysis rxn. The other option would be to use the toluene and derive it for a Wittig rxn to add a carbonyl alkene group, which would be safer for an ozonolysis rxn. Again I'm kind of thinking as I type. I do this for most of your videos. Think out loud as I write.

I was looking st your TLC and it appeared as if you had a secondary spot higher on the sample side vs the standard. I do think a chromatography column would have bosted in your favor in the separation step. You could have collected fractional of your product from the TLC you initially performed using the same Rf values and solvent. You can load quite a bit of material onto the column you're going to use for separation. It would have given you better product collection.

The mechanics of forming benzyl chloride is interesting too.

I wonder why DCM caused it to form while carbon tetra chloride did not. A very interesting video on yt.

What is interesting was the benzaldyde converting with DCM and Chromyl chloride into benzyl chloride. I guess side product like that are impossible sometimes to stop.

After watching, I finally got motivated to join the Patreon.
Even my kids (2 & 5 yo) really like watching your videos. Figure I should contribute since we're all getting such a kick out of your projects! π

I missed your cooking channel: pure toluene π, chromyl chloride (with glass shards) π₯°, explosion hazard π€©. All the best entertainment elements are present π Well done!

Classic NileRed. Wants to make sweet flavor from paint thinner, makes teargas instead. Better use ozone layer depleting solvent then, actually works. Amazing video as always!
