Turning plastic gloves into grape soda

Hey guys, I have been away for a while and it's mostly because I took forever to edit this one. It is the longest synthesis that I've ever done for a single video and it's also the longest video!

I hope you like it. Let me know what you think and it you notice any issues/problems.

Turning plastic gloves into grape soda

Comments

This one is sooo long, but I’ll get to it eventually 😉 Merry Christmas Nile!

Now try making gloves out of fake grape juice

I'm going to use it for another video

Nile Red

At 14:23 you drew phthalic anhydride rather than phthalimide

Thor Correia

Gloves and isopropyl alcohol: Two of the hardest ingredients to get this year :)

Loving the OTC based projects!

“A small amount”

This is awesome as always! There is a couple of relevant things that I learned on a personal project of mine a few years ago, related to this. I find most commercially made sodas to be too sweet for my taste so a couple of years ago I embarked on a project to learn how to make my own from basic flavoring components. I didn't quite succeed in my goal of making a less sweet soda because of the second item that I'll mention here but I did learn a great deal about flavoring food. The first thing that I learned was that taste and smell are insanely concentration dependent. The same flavor compound that tastes fruity or smells floral in a low concentration can be gag inducing at higher ones, and different aspects of a flavoring can be perceived at different concentrations. This is probably what is going on with the "musky" taste from your methyl anthranilate. The second thing is the reason that your not-very-water-soluble flavoring was able to dissolve in your soda. You guessed that it was the acid changing the solubility. Actually it was the *sugar* doing it! In high enough concentrations sugar acts as an emulsifier allowing droplets of oily flavoring compounds to be suspended in the aqueous solution. This is very important for flavoring sodas as many if not most of the flavoring compounds you'd want to use to do such are water insoluble "oils". This works well if you have a high enough concentration of sugar and your flavoring oil is reasonably close to the density of water. Without as much sugar it does not work very well and you have to mess with other emulsifiers like gum Arabic. This is what derailed my quest to make a less sweet soda, and is also one of the reasons that diet soda tends to taste so lousy.

>synthetic hot sauce Oh, what I wouldn't do to see that.

Gordon Ramsey is rolling in his grave, and he's not even dead. Love the video though!

fantastic video homie

Liam

I feel like you're wasting resources when you're buying huge amounts of chemicals you'll never use.

Simon the Delusional

Very cool experiment.

I think you could also include the percent yields for each step like what you did in the aspirin to Tylenol video.

Excellent video! Could you include the exact quantities of the chemicals used? I would like to repeat some of the steps you did (don't worry; I know how to do it safely)

Nile oh Nile—the creativity and fun from you is unparalleled. Do you wake up or stare into the sky and then suddenly have these mad-scientist ideas⁉️ Merry Christmas ⛄ soon!

Alexander Kirk

Tasting the pure final product was not a good idea, you should first dissolve it in something a bit. The drawings... omg I love them, do not ever change that style. It never ceases to amaze me how clean your hot plates are, you have them disposable or what? lol. The video is just mind blowing. Amazing work, virtual high five!

Marta

I use your videos as a benchmark to how well I understand organic chemistry and I've got to say, this video made me realize that I understand nothing. I have no idea how half the processes you mentioned would even begin to work. Great video though, always fun to see a long synthesis!

Intrepid

Would be better to say plastic grape sofa flavour. My generation’s parents always had plastic fruit somewhere in the house! 🤣😂

André Forcier

I like how you are getting more relaxed about tasting chemicals it makes the videos so much better when you eat it.

If you ever out of curiosity want to know what some of the random stuff you have is, let me know. I have a government lab and free reign.

Yeah, stuff alone usually just tastes bad, or it's bitter/burns.

Nile Red

I'll try. I spent a long time trying to make it look good, but it was hard. I think dark text somehow looked worse.

Nile Red

I'm not surprised it tastes terrible in its pure form, you essentially burn your tongue's receptors for a while, same thing happened to me when I tried pure essential oil. Way too strong and it's really gross no matter how nice it smells. Typically you mix a tiny amount with an emulsifier and tons of sugar water.

Larry B

I think in humans it's safe at low doses for long periods

Nile Red

The carbon in the CO2 comes from the urea I believe. There was a typo though and I didn't add the N to the phthalimide. It should be an N instead of an O.

Nile Red

It's 99%. I'll add it to the video

Nile Red

I'll look into that

Nile Red

The first time I learn them.

Forgive me, your past presentations have spoiled me into thinking all chemical equation should be like....

@38:52 My guess is that you are "organically brave", but what do I know....I'm just a double-E :)

@14:22 Where did the Carbon come from? and where did the Nitrogen go to?

@2:55 what percentage of isopropol, or why it doesn't matter.

I enjoyed this crazy adventure as always!

Jer

Well done Nigel! I have been waiting for a good chemistry video and this one hit the spot! The synthesis was great to experience and I enjoyed your log of the process. Great video excited for what’s to come in 2021

Grape soda plastic flavor.

Daniel Blake Shoemaker

Are there any toxic effects of this chemical? Long term I mean?

Daniel Blake Shoemaker

Your Kool-Aid fine print note in red text is illegible to me.

Will Latinette

Small amount (5kg), what, are you opening a soda factory? :D Great content, exactly the stuff i sub for on youtube and here.

At about 5:30, you may want to move the diagrams down some or change them from white to black. The reflections in the flask make it a little hard to see parts of it.

Wow, this is amazing!

Emil Almberg

From gloves of all things. Somehow I can wrap my head around going from pee to sweetener, but gloves!!

MrTridac

100%, sorry. This wasnt meant to have ads.

Nile Red

Would it be possible to disable ads on future videos before they go public?

Good call, it's definitely not making the exactly same thing lol

Nile Red

You forgot to change the O to N in the structure of Phthalimide at 14:23!

Very excited to watch this later!

Timon S. Gutleb

I’m so excited for this. Welcome back!!!!

Here we go!
