As far as I remember, sodium cyanide at a concentration (in the air) 300 mg/m3 for 1 minn causes death - if you have a headache, you have detected it. My books do not mention this, but I think that the inhalable toxic hydrogen cyanide is only released from sodium cyanide in aqueous solutions by hydrolysis (not sure tho). Burned cyanides are also toxic to inhalation because smoke contains nitrogen oxides. Crystalline sodium cyanide would only be dangerous if ingested (150 mg dose = immediate death). I love poisons, I'm dying to know what's the next video about!

I had an organic chem prof in college who told us that smoking tobacco increases the sensitivity of your native cyanide detector to the point at which you can't smell the HCN without the smoking, but with it, the smell/taste that the gas imparts to burning tobacco is obvious.

Your lungs could be considered a cyanide detector but like an electrical fuse, it only works once. ONCE.

I use this kind of stuff for work. One thing you might want to consider, shorten the tubing to only what you need. Those don’t move a lot of air quickly so there’s a delay between when cyanide starts entering the tube and when it hits the detector to sound the alarm

Sniffing cyanide is not a good way to detect it. For one thing, if you can smell it (the famous almond smell) you can inhale a dangerous amount just by sniffing it. And many people are almost completely insensitive to it, anyway.
