Making glow toys from scratch

Hey guys, this is the first video in a while! Sorry for the huge delay, it took a lot longer to edit and put together than I thought.

Let me know what you think about it and if you see any errors. Also, at the end, I forgot to mentioned the two extra "lego" guys in the last shot. They were made with a bit of leftover stuff and I will be giving them away. When the video goes live, Ill post a link on how to enter for a chance to get them.

I found that you actually copied the Fe and S reaction from the video "What is fools gold"

Strontium Aluminate is what's used in glow-in-the-dark 3d-printing filament, as I found out the hard way. It's very abrasive, and it ruined my original brass printing nozzle. Since then I've upgraded to a ruby-tipped nozzle, which ought to handle it better! Example, this 1:10 scale T-Rex GITD skull: https://photos.app.goo.gl/KqMP23JWmsLuETM18

Burning Zn powder with S was spectacular. I hope your fume hood could keep up, and that you were wearing a respirator anyway; between ZnO fumes and SO2, your lungs would be very unhappy otherwise.

On one of our old videos you talked about wanting to cover enzymatic processes. I know its off topic but, I think It'd be really interesting. Maybe on NileBlue

As far as I know, it's just because it can only happen in an acidic environment. It needs acidic protons (H+) around to react properly.

Hey Nile, great stuff! One question, why doesn't the permanganate also oxidize the zinc?

Thor Correia

This was so much fun! Great video!

Ill look into that

Only suggestion is during the Iron sulfur reaction you mention that you like the sound of the reaction, but only let the audience hear it for about 3 seconds without commentary. It's also fairly quite, so although you can hear it behind the voice over it's gotta be pretty loud. Please don't stop doing the commentary though! Would be nice to have the reaction replayed though with the volume boosted to match the VO level

Love this video and the return to how to get from A to Z, with chemistry.

This was really great!

Hm Zinc Sulfide it easier with sufate salt and making H2S reacting it with iron salts to make FeS. I made Hydrogen sulfide by boiling bleach in a special flask with sulfur and detected metals. Very dangerous gas indeed i had 3 fans on.

Making this is on my list for several years now. I would use the precipitation of ZnS and CuS at the same time approach, I bet it will make a better doping.

When I was a child I had glowing dinosaur skeletons, but it was a hundred years ago and they were probably radioactive. I admire your dedication to such long and complicated and messy projects. figurines came out cute, I want one (the baby made me laugh so hard). you did a good job. Satisfaction is always the greatest when you do something yourself from scratch.

Marta

That glowing baby is just what I need to complete my “Mothers of Chernobyl” cosplay!

What would of happened if you made zinc sulfite and copper crystals and put then under a black light?

There's a new one coming out on NileBlue soon. It was filmed/edited a while ago, but after that, we won't have anything for a while :(

Nile Red

Can't wait to see the Nile Blue version!! You guys are so funny when you're just effing around 😂
