Project Update

For a new project I'm currently working on, I had to make a homemade CO2 canister that can be charged with dry ice.

Edit: It is made entirely of high pressure 316 stainless steel and is rated to take pressures that are way higher than CO2. I was planning to empty it within an hour after filling it and so I didnt think i needed a pressure relief valve. There would be no reason for it to ever increase in pressure unless it fell into a fire or something. However, after reading your comments, I've decided to add one just in case and to do things properly.

Have you tried a grocery store? I'm not familiar with Canadian grocery stores, but I can pick up dry ice, by the pound, at several of my neighborhood grocery stores.

Glad to hear it! I'm glad you're being safe <3.

All of the connectors are the same rating as the main pieces.

This may be a dumb question, but are the connections and seals also rated to take the pressures? You may have parts rated to 3k+ psi, but if the seals aren't up to spec you can still get a critical failure where one part meets another.

I'll post more details when I actually finish. It's kind of a silly project, but it has been really fun to get it all working.

Nile Red

Ooh a tease!

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I think I'll modify it if I need it in future projects. For now though, its use is very temporary.

Nile Red

It's being done for a very specific purpose. I didnt make it just to have a little co2 canister

Nile Red

I dont plan to hold pressure in here for too long. It's mostly temporary. Also, all the parts are rated for 3k+ psi and I'm never going to be putting it above about 700. Putting a relief valve definitely wouldn't have hurt though

Nile Red

He's doing some extractions with supercritical liquids.

That's easy to do. A few bucks worth of parts from the hardware store. I've done similar things in the past.

Silviu T

I mean, really? There was no easiest way to this?

Mono Keras

You may want to put another valve between the canister and the gauge.

Silviu T

I assume there really isnt any commercial purchasing options for dry ice in eastern Canada?

sharp cut threads are stress raisers i would do a pressure test before loading a working high pressure charge

I'm sure you know what you're doing. My only concern would be, as with all high pressure containers, an emergency pressure relief valve. I know that operating well within design limits is probably fine, but pressure vessels are terrifying.

Interesting Indeed.

Hmm Dry Ice projects. Well what would you use the Ice for? Slowing down reactions with dangerous reactions??
