What is fools gold?

This is the first video of many, where I plan to cover different minerals. Let me know what you think about it!

What is fools gold?

Good idea.

Nile Red

I just tried it and it was magnetic...damn! That wouldve been a good thing to add to the video.

Nile Red

Ill look into galena! and ill also try a magnet on the remains that i have

Nile Red

In what process or sense? Can you elaborate on what youre trying to do?

Nile Red

Thanks! My response is delayed, but im glad you liked it

Nile Red

I would definitely like to try some other enzyme based reactions.

Nile Red

Its a cool idea, but I actually dont know much about synthesizing crystalline minerals. Ill look into it, but i think it takes a long time and careful condition control.

Nile Red

Back then I did a lot of reckless and dangerous chem projects.

Daniel Blake Shoemaker

Cool sorry for the delay. I made Sodium sulfide Na2S by boiling bleach with sulfur (NOT recommended) as it generated a lot of chlorine gas it was temp control. Made FeS2 etc with iron salts and copper sulfate by adding Na2S with a bit of water to copper sulfate, etc salts. It was Interesting done 17 years ago.

The ending is so scary

(Apologies if this is in the video already; I'm on a slow link at the moment and can't watch it yet) Analyzing minerals is always good, but what I've always wanted to see was *synthesis* of various minerals. This would seem like a nice complement to your series on dyes (which, by the way, I'm still eager to see more of!), since many minerals (e.g. many of the copper ores, lapis lazuli, etc) form very pretty colors. And we all know how much YouTube likes pretty colors. :)

Nice video! Enjoyed it. Have fun in Japan! I don't know much about minerals. They are usually part of that other chemistry, whatever they are calling it these days, the kind of chemistry that isn't organic chemistry. Geology? In one of your earlier videos you got yeast to produce ethanol and distilled it. Would love to see you get yeast to make something other than ethanol.

I do a lot with minerals and I felt it was an excellent nicely balanced treatment of the subject. Despite knowing a lot about it, you kept me interested and I really enjoyed it. (I even liked the well thought out segue into the sponsorship at the end 😁). I hope you have a great vacation!

Michael Aichlmayr

Great video! I'll have to send you some of the synthetic pyrite I've been making. :)

Matthew Wilson

Do you know anything about carbon dioxide sequestration using hydroxides or reverse combustion

Pyrite is indeed cool looking as well as quite useful. It was for a long time the main feedstock for making sulfuric acid. Perhaps for the next moneral you could compare and contrast it with galena. Also probably a good and simple way to test whether the black and the red layers were iron oxides would have been using a magnet, especially on the powder form. Have fun on your vacation!

Yes, I would definitely like more mineral videos! This was a good one. Great work!

Neuroskynet

Looking forward to more mineral videos, maybe with more chemistry like how to recover the underlying metals.
