Hexanoic/Caproic acid

Hey guys, second video of the month! I am super slow right now.

I am going to try to get a few more out before the month is done though.

That's pretty cool. Looks like a pretty big project to get done though.

That second link is a pretty cool method. I don't think I'll do it though. It's pretty specialized and working with 1000c molten salts is no joke. I think if I ever do molten salt reductions it will be the reduction of molten NaCl to elemental sodium.

Nile Red

Can you post a screenshot? The book says it's unavailable.

Ammonium perchorate would definitely be cool to make. I am honestly a little hesitant about super strong oxidizers though. The other channel is NileRed2. I haven't posted anything in like 7 months, but I'm going to start soon

Nile Red

I didn't know you had other channels. Looking at your youtube page, there seem to be no mention of them. https://www.youtube.com/user/TheRedNile/channels . Also reading your channel's discussion page, I see someone asking for ammonium perchlorate, I would like to +1 on that. It is the main component of "Ammonium perchlorate composite propellant" (together with fine aluminium powder and polybutadiene elastomers). A high performance high reliability solid rocket fuel. Rocketry is all about reliability and no one on youtube has a recipe for making that is to your level of precision and completeness. I don't know how much of an audience amateur rocket fuel but Grant Thompson got 8.9 million views out of his KNO3+sugar rocket fuel.

Thanks, I really appreciate the support! :). I know what you mean about exclusive content though. I think you are right. In terms of other videos, I really want to make some more general videos and not just on synthesis. I am slowly working on this. I ptocrastinate because it's a new filming style and I'm not used to it, ha. There should be olenty of new stuff coming in the next few months! I'm going to start uploading more to my other channel too. That will be more general chemistry and science and not so super focused.

Nile Red

Not related to this videos but you said you weren't sure what to do with the patreon stuff. I can tell you, don't make patreon exclusive content ! Or if if you do, release to the public 1 month or 6 month or even a year later but don't keep it locked here. I subscribe to your channel because I want you to make more videos for everyone. As for suggestions, I think parts cleaning (procedure creation,,acids, descalers, rust removal, sche, degreasing, chelating, surfactants, spray9,tsp(preventing flash rust) and even ordinary ammoniac ) and parts plating (copper, silver, gold, phosphate, nitriding, nickel plasma metarial deposition, platinum aluminid coating of gamma prime nickel alloy, etc) and other practical chemistry and lab good practices (how to clean glassware for instance) Great channel you dethroned nurdrage as the best chemistry channel on yt!

What reaction do you mean? Monosodium glutamate is just a molecule. Do you mean to make it?

Nile Red

Hey, I just had an idea about what reaction I'd like to see: Monosodium glutamate. I'd LOVE to see how that's done.

Roger Lee

That is a very good point. Maybe I will open a letter tier. Still on the fence though. I forgot that I have ultimate negotiating powers. I guess I just don't like disappointing people, ha

Nile Red

It's quite reactive so I imagine the reverse process could be similar to that of alkali metals. Not exactly the easiest . I could be totally wrong though

Nile Red

No idea, but I have quite a few kg and the metal would be more useful to me than the salt. I was hoping you might have and idea.

Damien Armstrong

When you set it up, you can stipulate that any requests are at your discretion. If some joker were to donate a whole bunch, but then state they wanted something like azidoazide azide or Dimethyl Mercury or something equally absurd, you could probably let them know that were you to make azidoazide azide (C2N14) that they'd be right along to arrest whatever happens to be left of you and maybe they'd like to come up with something ... less energetic (I'll let you work out the wording). Or if it'd be too boring, let them know. Negotiate, good sir, and remember, it'd be your body parts they'd be fishing out of the ceiling tiles, and in the words of Derek Lowe (who actually started me on my way toward learning Chemistry -- and I hope he's happy about that!): "if you're not careful, the mark you make on chemistry would be in the form of a nasty stain on the opposite wall."

Roger Lee

I've been thinking about that idea for a while. It's just hard for me to offer. If someone donates a lot and gives a really bad and boring idea, am I stuck with it? Haha. I just feel like it might create some troubles. I could be totally wrong though

Nile Red

Do you know how cerium is normally produced? Is there a feasible amateur route?

Nile Red

I'd love a new branded lab coat! Can you do a video of producing cerium metal from cerium fluoride?

Damien Armstrong

Would love to have the beaker and lab coat.

I like the beaker and lab coat idea. I'd also suggest, for high enough, that the donor be allowed to request a reaction (within reason, of course).

Roger Lee

Good call. Thanks!

Nile Red

Typo in video title - should be grignard reaction.
