Benzaldehyde from Cinnamon Oil

Hey guys, second video of the month. I'm sorry, I've been kind of slow. I am still going to post 5 videos this month though! I am working on some new stuff for next month, so be prepared!

Just a simple sol-gel process. Take Titanium nitrate, nickel nitrate, or whatever transition metal nitrate salts you have lying around, prepare a 1M solution, saturate with glycine, dry the mixture the best you can, then heat gently until it becomes a soupy black mess. After heating it will combust and you will have your ceramic powder. This video is using Titanium nitrate, but you could get similar results with nickel nitrate. The synthesis is ubiquitous in inorganic chemistry these days, and you can find an outline in most papers, like this one: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304885399005661 I like using glycine to create the gel, but this article uses citric acid. Same idea, but the "geling" compound depends on what metal nitrates you use and what properties you want the ceramic to have (high porosity, high surface area, small particle size, etc., etc.) Again, the prep for this synthesis is perhaps thirty minutes, followed by drying overnight, then maybe an hour for the combustion. Very easy and quite enjoyable.

That is pretty cool! I am tempted to do it. Do you know what was in the beaker? Do you have a procedure for this?

I know you tend to focus on organic chemistry, but you might do a demonstration of Sol-gel combustion synthesis of ceramics. This one is very nice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9p3VqQm4H4 In the lab, I have used this method to make Ce0.9Gd(0.1-x)NixO(3-d) ceramics for use in SOFCs. Not quite as impressive, as this TiO reaction, but it is easy to carry out, and produces good results.

How far are you in making TCPO? That would be an awesome video!
