Aluminum isopropoxide

Hey guys, last video of the month!

Thanks again for all your support!!

Aluminum isopropoxide

There is always going to be mercury contamination if the mercury catalyst is used. We shouldnt have any suspended though because the mercury is so much denser it sinks to the bottom. In order to get rid of almost all of it, the isopropoxide could be decanted and redistilled. The longer time it took to solidify was likely due to small amounts of contaminants. The amount of alcohol present should be very low though because I got rid of pretty much all of it in the initial vacuum distillation.

Why didn't you remove the mercury drop? Wouldn't excessive mercury possibly cause side reactions on other possible experiments or was there always the expectation of suspended mercury contamination? What are the chances that the extra time needed to solidify was due to other contaminates coming over during distillation such as an excess of alcohol? Very good video. Thanks for sharing.

Ugh. You are right. There is always at least one mistake... :(
