Making Basic Copper Carbonate
Added 2016-03-28 03:10:54 +0000 UTCHey guys, here we have some basic copper carbonate. It is not a super interesting experiment honestly, but the colors are cool and I needed to make it :)

Some was from pickling scrap copper with acetic acid, some through electrolysis of copper in water (CuOH) then acetic acid.. I've also made it by electrolysis of Calcium-acetate solution in water, using copper anode, and steel cathode, but this method is better for growing Cu-acetate crystals (on steroids), because it is hard to avoid the Ca-acetate impurity. It's good for big crystals, bad for making copper carbonate, as you're likely to get plenty of CaCO3. Unless you use an appropriate membrane, or bridge two separate containers etc.. The above-mentioned process is as crude as it gets, being all done in one container.

2016-03-28 14:07:58 +0000 UTCPersonally I tend to go from copper sulfate because during the summer it's very easy to get. People use technical grade copper sulfate as an algicide in pools.
