Puppies and....Taxes

Patron art of late!

I figured I'd open with the puppo to try to soften the other not so pleasant news. You all deserve to be informed, though:

The Taxman Cometh

It was just a matter of time, really. Patreon is required by law to start charging sales tax on some pledges beginning in July.

Behind the scenes, to minimize charges, I have provided detailed breakdowns of each pledge tier to describe what's entailed - not every aspect of patronage is taxable. Other than that, the tax rate is a percentage of your pledge amount, and that percentage is a function of your geography (country/state). Many of you will luck out for now as some US states and countries are not requiring sales tax on pledges (yet). For most others, it appears the sales tax should only add up to a few cents per pledge.

I am sorry about this. If there was something I could do to prevent it happening, I would do it, but neither I nor Patreon itself I can stop the inevitable, ineluctable Juggernaut of Taxation. If it's a deal-breaker for you, I do understand and thank you for your past support! And if you're sticking around, well, bless you! (Really, I'm extremely grateful.)

If you'd like more information about this change, you can read about it here.

Lastly, UUUGH.

I'm scrambling to get you some comic art amidst all of this film work, but I have just been tripped up by some disembodied cosmic sense of humor. My primary working device (a Wacom Mobile Studio pen computer) has literally just started coming apart at the seams because the lithium battery is expanding. That's...bad. Meanwhile, all Wacom repair centers are closed indefinitely for Covid, so this thing is out of commission for the foreseeable future. I'm falling back on my old scuffed up Cintiq+Laptop-what-crashes-all-the-time to get work done. It's slower going than I'd like, but I should still have at least a little something this week for you.
Apologies. -_-

So very happy to live in Oregon where sales tax is illegal.

I had this same problem with my mobile studio pro. If it's still under warranty they'll send you a whole new device.

Winter Ferger

Good luck on battery, delightful art as usual!

Garrett Simpson

haha Jasper is the spitting image of my Gabriel, it's like a free request! =o

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Found some fireproof LiPo storage bags on Amazon. I'll order one.

I do understand that swelling batteries are a hazard and I appreciate the concern. I have a yard as well, but I'm going to have to take my chances, I think. According to Wacom support, it's not dangerous (though I don't know how they've determined that). I've found many, many anecdotes of this happening to other Mobile Studio pen computers on the internet since I've searched, but I've not found any reports of them actually exploding (still, doesn't mean they haven't). And putting a $3500 device out in this humidity, while it's pouring rain and storming on and off is just....yeah. Ugh. It's not a great situation and I realize I'm assuming some risk here, but... I'll try to find some kind of container to put it in that would at least theoretically mitigate area of effect if it happens to go off.

Tracy Butler

They can't tax me that much on my $2! And, ugh, my supreme condolences on that bulging battery. :0

Suzume S.

@Tracy: Don't keep it in your home. It really is very, very dangerous - as in "wake up choking on smoke in a burning home dangerous". And the longer you leave it, the greater the chance that it will happen. But it could happen in the next few hours. Do you have family/friends with a yard who could store it for you outside? If so, then take it to them tomorrow.

Richard Weir

Thank you!

Tracy Butler

Well, I appreciate that very much. Thank you! =)

Tracy Butler

Thank you for the art dump and my condolences! Perhaps you can find a more generic repair center to help? Although most of those are also probably closed... I hope it works out somehow. Maybe a new laptop is in the budget at least?

DoveCGCP

Thank you, Todd!

Thank you!

Thank you for the further information. Unfortunately, there's no easy access to the battery/inner workings of this thing. If I take it apart, I'll void any possibility that Wacom may assume some responsibility (this is a widespread problem with this device, as it turns out) and replace it without charging me $1200 or more for a repair. The customer service rep I spoke with over the phone assured me it's not liable to be dangerous while sitting dormant (although it may be risky to assume their level of knowledge about the issue).

As an RC hobbyist, I can tell you that the "gases" in question are mostly hydrogen, and that the Lithium compounds in batteries are oxygen-reactive, meaning they burn on contact with air. What happens is the foil cell swells until it bursts, the lithium instantly catches fire, igniting the escaping hydrogen. The effect is a fireball that rolls across the ceiling. Unfortunately, just turning off the device will NOT prevent this. Li-Ion and LiPo batteries have to maintain a minimum charge or they begin producing much MORE hydrogen. If you can, remove the battery, take it outside, and submerge it in a bucket of salt water. That way, it will safely discharge, and if it burts, the hydrogen can simply escape without the lithium catching fire. Once it's discharged, you can set it on concrete, away from flammable materials, to let it dry before throwing it away.

Best of luck with your devices

good gravy I thought that was photograph you wizard

Yay, puppies! Boo swelling batteries (know that feel; have a couple of devices here that have had that particular syndrome) & taxes! And sorry, in reference to the taxes, you are stuck with my wee pledge no matter what ;)

Aaand Rocky as a clockwork monkey is yet another piece of art I didn't know I can't live without. Not to say that others are not; the wolf-fox pair particularly strikes me adorable. It's just... I like how Todd Merrill said it - we continue to be thoroughly impressed.

Begaminoid

Such distressed. Much hugs!

Begaminoid

To make things worse, you have limited shipping options when you send it in for repairs (can't ship it by air, at least). I had the same thing happen to my cell phone. I was able to get a new battery and replace it myself, but it's not a task for the not-technically and/or faint of heart (especially since they aren't designed to be opened). Was able to properly dispose of the old battery, afterward. Good luck.

kaitou

Yeah, it didn't seem safe to keep using it, so it's unplugged and set aside for now. Thanks for the detailed warning!

Tracy Butler

Oh no. A bulging Li-ion battery is dangerous. It can cause a fire."If you believe the battery in your phone, tablet, or laptop has started to expand, unplug the device immediately if it’s plugged in, and turn it off if at all possible. Don’t charge or use it at all, because lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries that are bulging have already bypassed built-in safeguards and are swollen with gases. Continued charging or use could lead to a runaway reaction that results in a fire or an explosion. " (from a MacWorld article)

Best of luck! Keep rolling with the punches, your dedication is outstanding! I continue to be thoroughly impressed!

Oh gosh your poor tablet!! 😣 and Rocky... oh dear sweet crazy Rocky. 😂 that dog art is AMAZING!!! Love the Christmas fairy too ❤️
