Back to back shoots - BTS

I had back to back shoots last week and this was a few stills from the different jobs. You sometimes have literally less than 24 hours to get yourself in the mind of the project aka film.

The first one is more about following the storyboards and working out what the client has in their mind. You've been given the location and you don't see it until you're there. You then have to very quickly work out how to light it, figure out how to capture the shots they've come up with plus add your input and lead the shoot. It's very much all eyes on you type thing. It's one of those jobs where it's hard work but fun as hell! I'll be honest, I slept like a log that night. This was a two day shoot and brain power was spent!

The second project, a one day shoot with multiple setups and locations. Is a little bit easier believe it or not because you're firing on all cylinders from the previous shoot days. First set up is talking heads (interviews). These are great to experiment with lighting, if you've got an idea you've been wanting to try out, this is where you do it. Same thing goes for shots or you might have a happy accident like I did with the behind the scenes shot. Moved the camera to change angle and fell in love with the framing and the story of BTS. You can see in the photos how I've used one key light with a gel (coloured plastic) on the front of it to give me that sunset, end of day look in the shots. This is great if you put the key light outside and shine it through the windows.  It creates fantastic texture and gives you a lovely sun kissed visuals on the walls behind or around the location.  As you can see in the photos, it was a proper British grey overcast day. Sometimes you've got to make the sunshine.

I hope you guys are enjoying the behind the scenes stuff. It's also a great way for me to give you some facts about how and why we do it.

P.S You can also see the photographers headshot set up and he's great. If you're interested in photography, my friend Kersten Luts runs a YouTube channel and podcast (Spotify and Apple Podcast) where he interviews literally the biggest photographers in the world! It's called Camera Shake, check it out.
